Discord adores his work. Making others uncomfortable, confused and irritated truly was his art. He could lean into any amount of effort needed to come up with perfect schemes and pranks and jokes. But Discord also enjoyed not doing anything, kicking back and letting others do his bidding.

When Fluttershy came into his life, he came to understand that he didn't just want to bully or force ponies into doing things for him. (At least, not all the time.) He craved someone who would do thoughtful and kind things for him without him having to ask, to anticipate his needs and take care of him. He was a being who could do or create almost anything he wanted but he really wanted kind words and sweetness despite his problem-starting tendencies.

She had begun to make him more and more comfortable with asking for things he may want from her and if she could do it she would enthusiastically agree. That's what gave him the courage to ask:

"My dear Fluttershy, this is a bit embarrassing but..."

"Yes?"

"Could you possibly...maybe...treat me like one of your animals? Or even...speak to me like one?"

Fluttershy and Discord start a very special scrapbook together. Not only filled with pictures but filled with many of their favorite things. Foods, stories, memories, people, travel locations, etc. They make this because, not only will it be nice to walk down memory lane later but because they seem to be more and more busy with other things lately.

It can be awkward trying to do something nice for someone if you forget exactly what it is they like, things they may have done before or even the last time you may have spoken and caught up on current events.

It's Discord's first year helping Fluttershy hands on with Kitten Season (a rather chaotic time at her humble little cottage in its own right) when he finds a tiny newborn kitten in bad shape. He rushes her home but despite everything the kitten dies by the end of the day.

Discord is deeply upset by this; was there something he did wrong? Something he overlooked or didn't try? If only he could go back in time and have done something differently...

...wait a minute! He can!

SNAP!

And the day starts over again.

What begins is a week's worth of loops that all end in disappointment, no matter what new thing or unorthodox treatment he tries. In fact, Discord is so exhausted by the end of that 7th "day" he gets sloppy and overlooks a vital component of his self inflicted loops:

Being the only one that remembers.

For Fluttershy, it starts as a vague sense of deja vu. By the second time around something is very fishy and Discord is definitely the one behind it based on the frantic look in his eyes but before she can approach him about it the day loops a third time and now she has to put her hoof down.

Discord tries to deny it but when she describes the kitten down to the last detail when he hasn't even brought it home yet he knows his jig is up.

And he breaks down.

If he can't keep one measly kitten alive with his magic, what will that mean a few decades down the line when she dies too?

It's hard to stay angry at Discord after something like that. And as disorienting as a 10 day time loop was, at least it came from a place of caring.

But if he's going to be running the sanctuary alongside her like they've been planning, he needs to learn that Death, too, is a Kindness.

No matter how much it hurts.

So Fluttershy and Discord find the kitten together, one last time. They take her home, get her warm and fed.

And when she fades, they let her go as gently as they can.

They bury her in the garden with some seeds, so something nice can grow there.

And, plain as they might be at first glance, Forget-me-nots soon become Discord's favorite flowers.
