I think most people can agree that Steff McKee is a yuppie, a bully, and just generally an asshat. He makes for a perfectly unlikable character and I think a lot of the love for him does simply come from James Spader's performance. But I want to pose that from a realistic/psychological standpoint I don't think ANY of the boys in the movie are endgame for Andie. They're all just graduating, they all have very different paths ahead of them, and I seriously doubt that Andie ends up staying with Blane or anyone from highschool (MAYBE Ducky in a far off future if they're both still single & grown ass people, but that's a long shot and a rant for another time). With that being said I could imagine a chain of events where an "enemies to lovers" arc could happen between Steff & Andie.

First of all, we know Steff is a bachelor/womanizer after mentioning his reputation with most of the girls in their school, and I feel like he actually does not care about money when it comes to the women he finds attractive. He makes a point to say he's liked/had an eye on Andie for four years and I honestly believe that could be true- Andie is smart, she confident, she's stubborn & stands up for her friends, she's beautiful, she has her own life that she's normally very happy with (until Blane comes into the picture & throws her off). I can see Steff finding a number of those things attractive, but he only acts on it right before they graduate because he knows making a move on Andie might not be well received by his richie friends. Of course Andie rejects him, she "knows he's shit", and I think she would in every scenario. But later on, after her perception is thrown off by Blane, I think that is where a lot of Steff x Andie shippers have a chance for a (toxic) plotline!

In case anyone is reading this because they want to write Steff x Andie I suggest starting at the party scene. While Blane might not have had any seedy ulterior motives he didn't fully understand/see Andie for who she was or her circumstances, hence him bringing her to Steff's party. Blane wanted her to fit in with him, not to fit in with her (also see the bench scene where he asks her out & the club scene). Steff wants the same thing. I don't think it's far off to say that Steff has just as much of a chance as Blane, IF he had played his cards differently at the party. In all honesty he wasn't outright hostile towards the pair when they came up to escape the craze downstairs, maybe if he'd made more of an initiative to stand up against Benny or put on more charm he would've made a shift happen in Andie's perspective. But of course he played defensive because of his inebriated mindset & the fact he still felt butt hurt over being rejected.

And later his conversation about it with Blane I think is already canonically fueled by his Jealousy that Andie doesn't see him the same way she sees Blane, because for years they've been best friends & Steff doesn't see any difference other than the fact that Blane has a different reputation with women (a worse one in his opinion, assuming of course that Blane 'dates' a lot less often). This of course triggers the locker argument (which I have plenty of theories about since it's pretty vague) and a part of me regularly thinks about what could be going through Steff's mind in that moment. Is he upset his best friend is being made into a spectacle? Does he feel smug that he had managed to break the pair up, hopefully ridding him of his jealousy? Is he admiring Andie's bite? There are so many different ways to interpret it- Not to even mention the fight with Ducky, his karma for everything.

Then finally we get the prom scene. Benny & Steff are so over each other, bored and disagreeing with each other, and Blane is a little heartbroken. I imagine (since Ducky got to the prom before Andie) that him & Steff have been glaring each other down for most the night, hence him wanting to leave early. And then she appears, pretty in pink, and making one hell of a statement against all of the richies that have done nothing but put the kids like her & Duck down. Andie is gorgeous and Steff freezes mid conversation, could be out of the jealousy he thought he'd moved past, and has to save face by making another cruel remark to Blane (this time making a cut at Ducky & not at Andie herself, maybe because of his admiration?). That's when it clicks for Blane, that's when he gets called out, and Steff just sits in it. He has to deal with the fact this girl, who he thought would jump at the chances he'd given her, saw right through him. And not only that but his best friend figured out Whatever he couldn't (I say that because honestly at the end I still don't see much difference between Blane & Steff, but that might just be because I think of Blane's actions as the actions of a "nice guy"- Not saying he doesn't actually like Andie, but after the events of the movie I feel like he still had a hard time trying to fit with her without thinking of his reputation).

All in all, as a fanfiction writer myself I can see plenty of ways that Steff x Andie enemies to lovers could happen, and in fanfic anything is truly possible. That doesn't mean I think it's healthy, but I also don't think any of the relationship options she has are healthy. There are plenty of ways that I can see this trope being written in, no hate of course to the original poster!! This is just my (way too in depth) opinion on the Steff x Andie conversation.
