It updates with a new chapter weekly-ish! I've included a snippet of Chapter 1 below.
LATE SUMMER, 1885.
Arthur watched his two mentors wordlessly shovel food into their mouths, both of them deep in thought. As he hunted in his bowl for a carrot or potato to give his teeth a break from the gristly, salt-soaked bits of meat in the meager stew, he wandered into his own aimless ruminations. Mostly about the invisible grip of the dense, humid air binding him in a damp discomfort.
And the noise.
From somewhere outside the flickering glow of the fire, a mighty chorus of cicadas hummed and pulsed while he, Dutch, and Hosea silently dined. The only sound that broke through the din of the insects’ swelling drone was the occasional chirping cadence of a katydid, not so much an interruption as a melody floating on top of the chorale. Arthur knew the sonorous hymn would fade as the curtain of night swallowed the last of the daylight, but the persistence of the refrain was astonishing.
Off on the other side of camp, Miss Grimshaw was eating alone, often preferring to take meals in her own company when Bessie and Annabelle weren’t around. He never had quite gotten his head around it.
Given her former place by Dutch’s side, he would’ve thought watching Annabelle playfully sitting in Dutch’s lap, tucking his long, dark locks behind his ears, smoothing the hair of his thick brows with her thumb, and affectionately spinning the rings on his fingers would be torture for Grimshaw. Instead, the presence of the other two women always seemed comforting to her—by all appearances, she was equally fond of them both and untroubled by the complicated history.
Puzzling as it was, there was little Arthur could claim to understand about women.
“What about the mill?” Hosea suggested, his words rupturing the spell of the cicadas’ song as he brought a spoonful of stew to his mouth.
”What about it?”
Dutch laughed deeply, spoon hovering halfway between his bowl and his lips. “What do you mean ‘what about it?’ son?!”
Arthur wasn't sure if it was affectionate or an unspoken joke at his expense. Always the fastest eater of the bunch, he had already finished his food and was pulling a cigarette out of the slightly soggy box in his pocket—it was suffering as much as he was in the humidity.
“We all saw the wagonloads of flour they delivered to the station when we rode through," Dutch continued, through the bite he’d just shoveled into his mouth. "It has to be one of the biggest operations in town, and thus one of the biggest opportunities for us.”
After setting out from Chicago and spending the past few months heading steadily west, they’d ended up in the ostensible breadbasket of the country. While Arthur was relieved to be away from the hectic, fetid claustrophobia of the city, he found himself instead feeling exposed in the vast, flat landscape in which they’d pitched their tents. They’d made it as far as Dodge City, but soon realized that a town saturated with outlaws and with a reputation for violence and mayhem was not the most strategic location to look for any significant scores. So, they’d headed southeast along the Arkansas River to seek out some place rather more civilized, as Dutch had put it.
Their campsite and temporary home was a fairly decent spot, all things considered—at least now that they were finally able to enjoy the hours-long labor it had taken to set it up. A handful of burr oak and silver maple trees surrounded the ring of tents, bedrolls, and the weather-beaten table and chairs they hauled from place to place. The humble embrace of the sparse canopy helped the space feel at least somewhat nestled in the wilderness despite being surrounded by the endless rolling plains. Miss Grimshaw had been the one to find the level, protected ground in the shadow of a small limestone bluff a ways outside the nearest city: Massey, Kansas.
“I chatted up some locals outside the drug store, and they say there’s a single owner—Gillis, I think his name is,” Hosea explained, scraping his bowl for the last few morsels of his dinner. “Owns the land, built the mill, acts as administrator. Sounds like he’s quite the local figure, not just in the city, but the county, as well. The operation being consolidated like that makes it an easier mark. Fewer moving parts.”
“But what do any of us know about millin’ flour, or…how much money they’re even makin’ there?” Arthur drew in a mouthful of dry, bitter smoke from his cigarette.
“Well, that’s where you come in. We’ll have you go scout the place." Leaning over, Dutch clapped him heartily on the back. "First thing tomorrow, I want you to ride over there and see what you can overhear, and, if possible, try to find where they keep the money—whether there’s a safe inside the mill, or if there are any points of vulnerability when the funds are transported.”
“Alright.” Arthur privately bemoaned the early morning that awaited him as he flicked his cigarette into the fire. “I’ll tryta leave before the sun’s up.”
Finished with his meal, Hosea turned at his waist to set the metal bowl on the log next to him, and the light of the fire caught the gray that had begun to streak his straw-colored hair. “And I’ll head back into town tomorrow, see if I can glean anything useful from folks at the station.”
“When’re Annabelle and Bessie comin’ back from Dodge City?” Arthur asked, missing the liveliness the two women brought to the camp.
“Might be another couple days.” Dutch sighed with a marked unease. “They were working over some wealthy widower who’d taken up a room at the Dodge House Hotel. Seems he was dead set on gambling himself into self-destruction, and the poor lonely fool was particularly vulnerable to the suggestions of, well…beautiful women.”
“They’ll manage themselves just fine, Dutch,” Hosea reassured his old friend and partner of many years. “They always do.”
“Arthur! Come help me get this mess from dinner cleaned up!” Miss Grimshaw yelled from the other side of camp.
Despite himself, Arthur groaned at the request. Doing the dishes felt like woman’s work and a backslide into boyhood, just as Dutch and Hosea were finally treating him more like the man his 22 years—and proven capabilities—called for.
“Can’t John do it?!” he hollered back.
“John is studying his letters tonight, and we should leave him to it lest the passion for education leave him once again.” Careful not to admonish Arthur, Dutch was still keen to remind him of his responsibilities.
A rowdy heel like Arthur had never known, John scarcely deserved the patience Dutch and Hosea had granted him. But with at least enough sense to recognize he’d been no eager student at first, either, Arthur knew the kid would grow up sooner or later.
“Fine,” he yielded, begrudgingly gathering up the other men’s empty bowls, and trudged over to the water basin to help Grimshaw do the washing.
After 6 months of regular updates—and just after passing the 100k word mark on this story—this slow burn finally got some satisfaction. 😅 Tumblr being generally ambivalent about Mary/Arthur fics, I prefer to just quietly update over on Ao3, but I am popping over here to say that I’m particularly proud of the last chapter I posted, and I am excited about where the story is headed!

I've gotten into your fics recently, and can I say that they're honestly some of the best RDR2 fics I've ever read? I'm genuinely not even exaggerating when I say that.
I started with your Le Renouveau series, and I fell in LOVE with your depiction of Mary and Arthur. It felt as if I was reading a form of alternative canon tbh, because it was just that good and that in character.
Mary and Arthur are my favourite couple in RDR2, and you did them so much justice that I could've cried. The whole fic series was very cathartic for me, and I loved the ending as well.
I moved on to your other Arthur x reader fics, and was blown away by how good they were. He's so in character in all of them, and you somehow make the reader characters in the fics super interesting and engaging.
"Suffrage" was undoubtedly my favourite one, but I loved reading them all. Something about the reader character in that fic left an impression on me lol.
Apart from rambling about how good your fics are, I wanted to ask what your writing process is like? How do you make your writing quality so good everytime? You're lowkey my writing inspiration cause I'm thinking about writing for RDR as well but I don't know where to start.
Oh my goodness, I can't tell you how incredibly touched and moved I am by all of this! 😭💕 I am SO happy to hear you've been enjoying my humble writings. 🥹 Mary and Arthur are (quite obviously) my favorite couple in rdr2 as well, and once they got their hooks in me last fall, the obsession hasn't abated. Le Renouveau was such a special project to me (being the first fanfic/series I wrote), and the epilogue of A home in endless sundown remains one of my favorite things I've written. I also love that you enjoyed my Arthur x reader fics, too! I have a endless fascination with low honor Arthur, and the reader character in Suffrage. was especially dear to me. I first imagined her opposite Dutch in a different fic I never wrote, but decided to build a story around her and Arthur instead.
As far as my writing process goes, I almost always start with a loose outline. I don't outline meticulously because I enjoy the discovery that happens while writing, but I at least map out every major beat in the story. I try not to be too precious while drafting because I am a heavy editor. I can spend as much time editing a work as I do initially writing it, and I will usually let it sit for a number of days (or longer!) before I even start the editing process. It gives some space for the story to settle before I attempt to refine it, and I always do multiple passes. I am constantly thinking about what I enjoy as a reader (in fanfic and otherwise), and try to craft my prose and my voice around that. In the fanfic world, I'm inspired by the incredibly talented and skillful @honeycoyotes, and in traditional fiction by Emily St. John Mandel.
To get started, I recommend just finding an idea that excites you and diving in! I had never written any fiction before Love is a place I left behind, but was possessed by the idea and felt there was nothing to lose. A simple, but powerful piece of advice I received when I started was: "Just keep writing." It can be especially challenging at first, but you absolutely learn as you go, and it only gets more gratifying. I'm excited for you to start that journey, and I know you can do it!

(…in a number of weeks, assuming this fruit is fully pollinated…)
I actually tried to be smart with the seeds I selected this year, choosing varieties intended for shorter growing seasons (which I unfortunately have where I live and realized I would only benefit from admitting this to myself). These Shining Light watermelons were the first to bear blossoms of any of the melons or squash I’m growing, so I’m very hopeful I’ll actually end up with a handful of these before the weather gets too cold in the fall!
