I think one of the sneakier forms of fandom misogyny that I see ALL THE TIME is the Exceptionalism treatment of women characters (be they canon, OC, x reader, whatever) when they’re placed opposite a canon man as a love interest. Like the narrative crafts her as the softest, the most attractive, the best at sex, the most understanding, the most caring, or even the smartest, the most badass, the most perceptive, the most skillful Woman and THAT is why she inspires the love of The Man. THAT is why he’s Different With Her™. And even the fantasy aspect of that is deeply troubling to me? Because there’s an implication that a woman must embody these superlatives to be chosen, to receive the affections of The Man. And people love to claim they enjoy Complex Women, but do they enjoy just…Women?
