Chapter 01.
Even before the alarm dared to think about ringing, Phiona was already awake. Green eyes flicked open in the dark as if an inner switch had been thrown; sharp, alert, and ready. For a moment, the room held a military kind of silence, taut, and stillโฆ Until the faintest, slow rhythm of a childโs breathing filled the space beside her. It was soft, deep, and untroubled by the world. Reynna. The little girl was curled like a kitten beneath the heavy blanket, one cheek mashed into her motherโs arm, a single sock sliding halfway off her big toe. Phiona let her gaze linger, her expression quiet but fierce, in the silent kind of vow you do not speak aloud because it is stitched into your bones.
She slipped from the bed without a sound, gathering her nearly wavy hair into a high bun as she padded down the hallway. The apartment smelled faintly of lavender detergent and last nightโs chamomile tea. In the kitchen, the click of the light switch was followed by the hiss and rich aroma of coffee brewing, dark, strong, a command to her senses.
By the time the mug warmed her hand, she was already in the bathroom, steam curling over the mirror. The shower was quick, efficient, and when she stepped out, she was already mentally assembling the day ahead. The uniform, laid out: navy sweatshirt, black pants, and boots waiting by the doorframe. She pulled her hair tighter into a regulation bun. Makeup followed, not as vanity, but as ritual. The soft sweep of blush, two precise coats of mascara, and a brick-nude lipstick to push the pallor of dawn from her skin. It was not about how it looked; it was about control, about starting the day on her own terms.
When she returned to the bedroom, Phiona carried a bottle of chocolate milk in one hand, and a neatly folded miniature uniform in the other.
โRise and shine, ladybug!โ her voice was warm, murmured with a touch of mock-heroic flair.
โFive more minutes, Mommaโฆ" Rey mumbled, not even cracking an eyelid, one arm flung over her face like a Shakespearean damsel.
Phionaโs mouth twitched toward a laugh, but she held it in, a smile softening instead.
โTodayโs mission will not wait.โ she countered, peeling back the blanket with practiced gentleness, folding it with care before laying it at the foot of the bed.
Rey, her hair a shade lighter than her motherโs, rose reluctantly, clutching the chocolate milk like a canteen. Phiona helped her into the tiny firefighter uniform. It was the last week before summer break, and Rey was transitioning to a new school. On orders from the Captain, she spent mornings with him when her mother was on duty. It made sense; he was her godfather.
Independent as she had been raised to be, Rey was ready in ten minutes flat: pigtails neat, teeth brushed, and a backpack full of art supplies slung over her shoulders. A small red bracelet rested on the little girlโs wrist, a โbravery bandโ Captain Forester had given her on their last shift together.
At 6:40 AM sharp, Phiona scooped her daughter up, not because she had to, but because it was their thing. Reyโs arms looped easily around her neck, her head finding the familiar curve of her shoulder. Phiona shut the apartment door with her elbow.
The city was already stirring, sirens somewhere far off, the clatter of a delivery truck, the hiss of bus brakes. Somewhere down the street, a bakeryโs first batch of bread was hitting the ovens. โAh, the sweet symphony of the city!โ she murmured under her breath.
Nothing was as certain as grounding, as the moment they pushed through the wide bay doors of Station 14.
โGood morning, Little Recruit!โ Marissaโs voice carried from the upstairs kitchen at the far end of the hall, warm and teasing in equal measure.
โMorning, Auntie Mars!โ Reynna squealed as she wriggled down from her motherโs arms before Phiona had even reached the stairs. The lieutenant followed at a steady pace while the girl darted ahead, all elbows and excitement, straight toward her godfather.
Forester sat sunk into the couch against the wall, a stack of reports balanced on one knee, eyes narrowed in the way of someone who had already survived three shifts before 7 AM.
โCaptain Pops!โ Reyโs voice cut through the quiet like a fire bell. Dennisโs face split into a wide grin, the kind that made the deep lines around his eyes look like they had been carved there by years of laughter rather than strain.
He tossed the papers aside, spread his arms wide, and scooped her up with the effortless strength of someone who clearly had been doing it since she was just a red-faced bundle of cries in Phionaโs arms. โMy favorite officer has arrived! Night mission debrief, please.โ
Rey leaned in close, cupping her small hand around his ear like she was about to pass state secrets. โI dreamed Momma saved a cat who turned into a dragonโฆ Then it turned into a backpack!โ
Dennis nodded, taking notes on buying a cat or dragon backpack for his goddaughter, he paid attention, carefully, to all that girl ever said or have done over the years, โCopy that, little lady. Biohazard classified as a wearable creature. Filing it under โpotential alliesโ just in case!โ
From the kitchen, Ozwaldโs voice rumbled through the air.
โCareful with that coffee, Phi. Itโs stronger than my last existential meltdown.โ he slid a piece of toast with jam toward her like a peace offering. Phiona grabbed a mug, filled it with what was almost certainly the bitterest brew in Philadelphia, and leaned against the counter, the jam did some justice softening the strong flavor of black coffee.
She let her eyes sweep over the room. Her daughter tucked safely in her godfatherโs arms. Oz at the stove, cooking scrambled eggs that no one would admit to liking, but everyone ate anyway. Mars pretended she was not eavesdropping the fellow colleagues off the other squad. Zayon snapped a photo of the bulletin board because he would forget the daily schedule... Again. Emmett, steady in the corner, quiet but anchoring the space all the same.
Station 14 woke up like it always did: with rough edges, loud voices, and the kind of affection that did not need to be dressed up. In that little world where pain and bravery walked side by side, Phiona breathed in deep.
The world outside was still harsh.
There, at least, she was not alone.
Another almost-ordinary morning started at Abbott Elementary. In the teachersโ lounge, Janine was locked in a battle with the printer for the third time that week, stabbing the โprintโ button like persistence alone might scare it into compliance. Gregory was arranging potted plants on a makeshift shelf, searching for a scrap of serenity before the day began. Jacob, pacing lightly, rehearsed a poem about solidarity to open class with, his hands moving almost as much as his mouth.
Melissa was already in the principalโs corner office, mid-argument about a delayed delivery of first-aid kits. The redhead did not just sense trouble; she could smell it three days ahead, like a storm blowing in off the Jersey coast. It was not a sixth sense, more like survival instinct honed by years of staff meetings and Sunday dinners with her Sicilian relatives. She was mid-sentence, Ava leaning back with that โI am bored but I am winningโ expression, when Melissaโs brow furrowed. Something was off. A faint, acrid tang in the air. โAva, you smell that? Or did your incompetence finally develop legs?โ
Avaโs lips parted for a signature comeback, and then the fire alarm screamed to life. A sharp chirp. Then a full, ear rattling wail. Within seconds, smoke began curling from the hallway vent. It moved like it owned the place. Melissa did not hesitate. She yanked the wheeled fire extinguisher, the same one she had patched with duct tape last week, and was in the hallway before anyone could say โevacuate.โ
โJacob, get the kids out of the art room! Janine, third graders! Gregory! Forget the plants, for crying out loud!โ the smoke thickened. Fast.
โEveryone outside! Now!โ Avaโs voice boomed, firm, urgent, and for once without the cushioning of sarcasm. Small children cried. Some shouted for siblings. Others scanned the chaos for an adult to make it better. Veteran teacher Barbara Howard guided them through the main doors with a calm that could move mountains.
Janine gripped three small hands, repeating like a mantra, โOne, two, three. One, two, three.โ Gregory stayed upstairs, shoving windows open to vent the smoke, his jaw tight and eyes sharp. Jacob crouched low to reassure the little ones, his voice steady despite the tremor underneath. Schemmenti shoved a classroom door open with her shoulder, a young boyโs hand locked in hers with the kind of grip that saves you and scolds you in the same breath.
โYou good? Breathing? Got all ten fingers?โ the boy nodded. โโฆGood. Now run.โ thatโs when she heard it: sirens closing in, a sharp crack from somewhere above the ceiling, and the burnt, greasy stench rolling thick from the cafeteria. โShit.โ she hauled the extinguisher forward, cursing budget cuts and the schoolโs ventilation system under her breath. The nozzle spat white foam into the smoke-clogged hallway, carving a narrow, breathable path.
One fire at a time.
The sound of Station 14โs engines tore through the air like a promise. Ruthless, roaring, charging through the streets like a knight in steel and chrome. When the firetruck screeched to a halt in front of Abbott Elementary, chaos had already taken root. The restless shuffle of dozens of feet. The hiss of smoke escaping somewhere it should not. Over it all, the unsettling groan of a building straining under its own weight.
First to step down was a tall woman whose presence hit before her boots even touched the ground. Striking green eyes cut through the haze, visible even behind the black seal of her mask. Her spine was straight as a steel beam; voice sliced through the noise with the precision of someone who had been here too many times and refused to lose. She read the unfolding disaster like an open blueprint. Lieutenant DโArc did not just arrive. She erupted. Turning the chaos into her playground.
The teachers, their faces sweaty and streaked with ash, did not back away out of fear, but out of trust. They knew someone was in charge now. Completely. Melissa Schemmenti took in the sight. That first firefighter hit the ground like she owned it, fearless, on heavy steps of someone who had stared down hell and bargained her way out. A leader. Unshaken. Her voice carried a fury that was tightly leashed but undeniably alive. It was like watching a parallel-universe version of herself, only with a fire hose instead of a coffee mug, and an oxygen tank instead of a sarcastic remark.
โThat woman knows exactly what she is doing.โ Melissa muttered. Half to herself, half to the universe, before shoving the last kid toward safety. Then she spotted Ava in the middle of the courtyard, phone raised, live streaming to her followers. โIf you are going to die, Coleman, at least die doing something useful, like counting the damn kids!โ
โThere are still kids in the cafeteria!โ Gregoryโs calm voice finally cracked, urgency flooding in.
โHas anyone seen Sophie and Max?โ Janineโs voice was thin, high, threaded with panic.
Phiona did not even glance up. She signaled with two fingers, a command, practiced gesture, Mars and Zayon fell in behind her without hesitation. The unspoken order was clear: search and rescue.
Then, in a flash of determination and expertise, she disappeared into the smoke.
Inside of the building was a choking maze. The air hung thick with smoke, bitter and burning, clawing down the throat. Every groan from the ceiling felt like a countdown. Glass popped in the heat, each sharp crack ricocheting down the hall like gunfire. In the cafeteria, overturned tables cast monstrous, twitching shadows across the walls. Phiona stayed low, scanning fast, until her eyes caught on a small backpack near the counter, then on two kids curled behind it. Tears streaked their darkened faces, soot covering both head to toe. Sophieโs coughs rattled her tiny frame; Max just clung to his knees, wide eyed and frozen.
โHey,โ Phiona said, her tone steady but warm, a lifeline wrapped in authority. โI am Lieutenant DโArc. I am here to get you both out. Ready to evacuate the danger zone?โ Max shook his head, sobbing. Sophie nodded, reaching for her like she was the only solid thing in the room. Phiona gathered them both into her arms without hesitation, the weight familiar, an automatic instinct, like she had done this a thousand times in a thousand nightmares.
In the kitchen, Marissa and Zayon were dragging an unconscious teacher toward the door while Emmett laid down a curtain of water, quenching the flamesโ reach. Somewhere in the west wing, Ozโs voice was barking directions, corralling students into daylight. Every movement was precise. Purposeful. A choreography born from trust. And in under fifteen minutes, they had done the impossible.
When the last student crossed the threshold into fresh air, the world seemed to exhale. No fatalities. No critical injuries. Just wide eyes and pounding hearts trying to keep up with what had happened. It was a blur, children shepherded into waiting arms, a limp body passed to paramedics, a younger male teacher caught mid-hallway, frozen, while someone screamed at him with the ferocity of an Italian mother refusing to lose her own. Then Phiona appeared through the haze. Two scared children in her arms, her stride heavy but unbroken, lungs dragging in the burn, her gaze locked forward. She looked past through hell and made sure no one else followed.
โSomebody write this down,โ Ava muttered, still dazed. โWeโre putting this on the school flyer: We survived 2020 and a fire. Try us.โ
Janineโs blouse was clinging to her from sweat and heat, looking at the fire crew with wide, reverent eyes, whispering thanks to whoever was listening. Jacob held himself and sobbed openly, the sound shaking more than the smoke. Melissaโs red curls were damp against her temples, a paper cup trembling in her hand. Her mind was working, scanning faces, counting the living. Her gaze landed on Gregory. He was not looking at the wreckage. Or the smoke. He was watching the commander firefighter.
From the moment she had pulled off her helmet, gasping for clean air, Phionaโs face streaked with ash and dried blood, something in him had shifted. Recognition. Not just of her face, of the way she looked at the children. Like every single one belonged to her, too. Melissa noticed. She tilted her head, remembering Avaโs comment just moments ago: โGregory!โ she said under her breath, a low voice for only him to hear. โYou keep staring at firelady like that, and we are going to add a romance novel cover to the school flyer too.โ Gregory blinked, startled, not looking away.
โIf that woman does not get a medal and a homecooked Italian dinner from me,โ Melissa added more loudly, โThis world is a lost cause.โ she straightened her shirt, swallowed her fear, and fell back into the role she always played, steady hands hiding the quake inside.
A few feet away, Janine, small in stature, big in heart, followed Gregoryโs fixed gaze.
โWโWhat is it?โ she asked softly.
His voice was barely a breath. โShe looksโฆโ as if the past had just stepped through the fire, still burning, and staring right back at him. โFamiliar.โ

Final Chapter.
Far away, Melissa and Galena had settled into a small coastal town in a distant state. Their apartment overlooked a quiet street lined with oak trees, with a view of the ocean glinting in the distance at sunrise. The air carried a salty tang, fresh and clean, so different from the smog and chaos of South Philly. They had arranged their belongings in neat, deliberate chaos, a mix of Melissaโs teaching books, Galenaโs sewing kit, sketches pinned on the wall, and small mementos from their past.
The living room smelled faintly of fresh coffee and peppermint, a comforting combination. In the mornings, they brewed coffee together, sitting by the window as the sun spilled light across the hardwood floors. Melissa would read aloud from her latest lesson plans while Galena sketched quietly, their hands occasionally brushing, sending tiny sparks across the table. Outside, the town moved slowly, with friendly neighbors, a small bakery that smelled of fresh bread, and a lighthouse at the edge of the pier casting its beam over the restless waves.ย
Inside, their lives were intimate and small, filled with laughter, soft kisses, and the ease of two people finally being able to breathe. In that little apartment, with the sound of the sea and the warmth of each otherโs presence, they were no longer defined by the past. They were free, together, and finally home.
The morning sunlight in Santa Barbara filtered through the wide doors, spilling across the small apartment in warm golden streams. Every surface glowed, every shadow softened. Melissa sat cross-legged on the wooden floor, her coffee cup cradled between her palms, feeling the gentle heat seep into her skin. She watched Galena moving among the flower pots, her hands brushing lightly over petals, the faint earthy scent of soil and blossoms mingling with Galenaโs perfume, a delicate hint of vanilla and peppermint. Melissaโs gaze lingered, drinking in the sight of her wife: the subtle curve of her back, the way her muscles flexed beneath the soft cotton of her shirt, the way sunlight caught in her dark hair.
โLook at us,โ she murmured, almost to herself. โWhoโd have thought, huh? Melissa Schemmenti, the tough Italian from Philly, tending flowers in California.โย
Galena turned, smiling, and the sound of her laughter rang like chimes in the morning air.
โI can not believe that I was a housewife,โ she said, stepping closer, her bare feet brushing the warm floor, โThe girl who had no direction, who now has a stylist career, a studio downtownโฆ And the love of her life. We finally have our home, Mel.โ
Melissa rose and took Galenaโs hand, feeling the warmth of her palm, the gentle tremor as Galenaโs fingers intertwined with hers. She noticed a slight paleness to Galenaโs skin, a tiredness in her eyes that had not been there before.
โYou alright, baby? You have not been feeling so good lately.โ Galena stopped watering the last pot and slowly turned, pressing her forehead to Melissaโs chest. Melissaโs arms wrapped around her, pulling her close, feeling the rise and fall of her breath against her own heart.
โI had to go to the doctor this morning, Mel," the tanned woman whispered, voice trembling with both excitement and fear. โIโฆ I was not feeling right, and the doctorโฆ She gave me the news.โ
Melissaโs breath caught. She tilted her head, searching Galenaโs eyes for a hint, a clue.
โWhat? What did she say?โ tears welled in her eyes, sparkling in the sunlight.ย
She cupped Melissaโs face in her hands, thumbs brushing away the faint lines of worry.
โMelissaโฆ I am pregnant.โ her voice was barely above a whisper, trembling with disbelief. โAfter five yearsโฆ After every failed insemination, every 1% chanceโ it worked. We did it.โ
Time seemed to stretch. Melissaโs eyes widened, the coffee cup slipping unnoticed from her hands. Her chest tightened, a mixture of disbelief, awe, and overwhelming joy filling her lungs. Then, slowly, a smile broke across her face, a wide, luminous smile, tears streaking her cheeks and sparkling like morning dew.
โPregnant? Galenaโฆ You areโ really pregnant!โ Melissa pulled her into a fierce embrace, pressing their bodies together, feeling the warmth, the rise and fall of each otherโs breath.ย
Her lips found Galenaโs, soft at first, lingering over her forehead, her eyelids, the tip of her nose, before trailing down her jaw, the curve of her neck, and finally settling on her lips. Every kiss was a vow, a release of years of longing, a celebration of the tiny heartbeat growing within Galena.
They sank to the floor, the patio tiles cool beneath them, and stayed wrapped in each otherโs arms. Melissaโs fingers brushed the soft curve of Galenaโs belly, already round with the secret life inside, tracing it gently in slow, reverent circles. Lena pressed her head against Melissaโs chest, feeling the warmth, the steady heartbeat, the calm certainty of their love surrounding her.
โI know,โ Galena whispered, her lips brushing Melissaโs collarbone. โIt is a miracle. Five years of trying, hoping, dreamingโฆ And now it is here. And it is us. It is ours.โย
Melissa tilted her head, capturing Galenaโs gaze with her own, eyes swimming with tears and joy. โYou are incredible, Lena. Every day, every moment with youโฆ It is everything I have ever wanted. And now thisโฆ This little miracle.โ her hands pressed again, tenderly, lovingly, to Galenaโs belly.ย
They stayed in that position for what felt like hours, wrapped together on the sun-drenched patio. Fingers intertwined, foreheads touching, lips brushing occasionally in soft, lingering kisses. The smell of earth, flowers, and Melissaโs perfume mingled with the salty tang of the ocean breeze.ย
Waves crashed rhythmically in the distance, a lullaby for their new life. Every glance, every brush of hands, every shared breath was a silent promise; love had won, hope had endured, and now life, real and miraculous life, was growing between them. As the sun rose higher, casting golden highlights across their entwined forms, Melissa pressed her lips to Galenaโs temple and whispered.
โWe are going to be the best family, Lena. Just you, me, and this little heartbeat. And I can not wait for every moment." Galena smiled, tears spilling freely, her hand resting atop Melissaโs as if sealing the promise of their future.
โI love you,โ Melissa murmured, voice thick with emotion, โmore than ever. More than I knew I could. More than you will ever know.โ they stayed there, bathed in sunlight, warmth, in the profound quiet of a life finally complete. Around them, the city slept, the ocean whispered, the flowers swayed. And in the center of it all, two women, five years of love, and a tiny new heartbeat held the promise of forever.

Chapter 07.
The room was bathed in a soft gloom, lit only by the first stubborn rays of sun peeking through the curtain slats. Galena woke slowly, feeling the warmth of Melissaโs body pressed against hers. They were nestled together, a perfect spoon under the soft comforter. Galena smiled, savoring the tranquility that Melissaโs presence brought her, the steady rise and fall of her chest, the familiar scent mingled with the crisp morning air. Careful not to wake Melissa, she shifted, straddling her legs gently, body warm, curves aligning, and began planting delicate kisses on her face, forehead, eyelid and the tip of her nose... Small and tender, teasing. Her lips traced the line of Melissaโs jaw, then down the graceful curve of her neck, each touch eliciting a soft shiver. Melissa stirred, a lazy sigh escaping her lips.
โMmmhโฆ If you keep that up, I am never getting up." she murmured, voice hoarse and soft, eyelids fluttering open with a spark of desire. Galena laughed quietly, pressing a lingering kiss to the corner of Melissaโs mouth, tasting her, memorizing the feel of her.
โMaybe that is the whole point,โ the brazilian whispered, voice low, seductive, each word brushing against Melissaโs skin like a promise. โI wanna show you everything I have always dreamed ofโฆ All those things I kept imagining with you.โ
Melissaโs eyes opened fully, wide, burning with need and affection. She wrapped her arms around Galena, pulling her close, heat meeting heat, every inch of their bodies pressed together.
โWell, come on then, beautiful. I am ready,โ she breathed, voice trembling with anticipation. โEvery second you are on top of me, I feel like I am walking in paradise. I dreamed about this moment my whole life.โ dawn filtered through the slats, painting the room in soft shades of orange and gray.
Galenaโs kisses became a slow fire, gentle at first, teasing, then insistent, tracing every curve of Melissaโs lips, down her neck and across her collarbone. Her hands followed, exploring the warmth of Melissaโs shoulders, the curve of her waist, slipping beneath the sheets to feel the softness of her thighs. Every brush of skin against skin sent shivers coursing through both women. โYou have no ideaโฆ How many nights have I been laying awake thinking about this.โ
Melissa murmured, voice raw with sleep and desire, fingers tangling in Galenaโs hair, pulling her closer. With the care of someone uncovering a sacred secret, Galena undid the zipper of Melissaโs pajama hoodie, sliding it slowly from her shoulders. Melissa lifted her arms, gasping softly as the garment fell to the floor, exposing the full sweep of her skin. Galena pressed kisses along her collarbone, tracing the curve of her breasts with her lips and tongue, exploring, worshipping, eliciting soft moans that vibrated through the room. Melissaโs body arched beneath her touch, fingers clutching at Galenaโs hair, nails grazing her scalp. The scent of her arousal mixed with the warm morning air. Galenaโs lips traced downward, over the soft belly, teasing the curve of her hip, every kiss a declaration of longing and devotion. Melissa gasped sharply as the woman lowered herself fully before her, hands sliding over her thighs, lips and tongue drawing out moans that filled the quiet room. The intimacy was electric, every nerve alight, every breath synchronized. Galenaโs eyes met Melissaโs, adoration and lust blazing in their depths, a silent confession in each gaze.
Melissaโs head fell back, eyes fluttering closed, body contracting with pleasure.
โLenaโฆ Do not stopโฆ Please." she moaned, voice thick with ecstasy. Each slow kiss, each deliberate touch, was both worship and discovery. Galena moved with devotion, memorizing every curve, every sigh, every shiver of the woman who had ignited her soul. The morning stretched on, a suspended universe of heat, moans, and whispered declarations. Each movement deepened their connection, sensual and emotional, until finally, wrapped together in tangled limbs and shared breath, they collapsed, hearts pounding, bodies spent, but minds and souls wholly intertwined.
The life Melissa and Galena had left behind collapsed into a deafening silence. By the time reality hit their husbands, the women were already miles away, somewhere in a neighboring state, free and unbothered by the chaos they had left behind.
Liam, the first to return after his shift, found the envelopes on the kitchen counter. Two of them, addressed in elegant, deliberate handwriting, his and Joeโs. The stamp from a law firm in a distant state caught his eye, but his brain did not process it fully at the moment. Confusion, disbelief, and anger collided inside him. He grabbed his phone, dialing Joe before he even realized what he was saying.
โJoeโฆ Manโฆ You are not going to believe this,โ Liamโs voice was tight, filled with tension. โThe girlsโฆ Theyโฆ They sent a lawyer.โย
Joe arrived minutes later, still in his firefighter shirt, face taut, eyes scanning the apartment, landing on the envelopes. He froze when he saw Liam holding one, the same stunned look mirrored on both their faces. For a long moment, they just stared at each other, lost, unable to process what had happened. What has gone wrong? What had they done or failed to do?
โOpen yours,โ Joe said quietly, voice low, almost reluctant. โI will open mine.โ they sat at the kitchen table, the silence pressing down, thick with yesterdayโs dishes and the faint smell of stale coffee.ย
Liam tore open his envelope, Joe did the same. Out fell the legal papers: bold, official, impossible to ignore. โDIVORCE BY MUTUAL CONSENT.โ was stamped across the top, a verdict they had not asked for but could not undo. Joeโs breath caught, his fingers trembling slightly.
Each envelope also contained a short handwritten letter. Melissaโs was blunt, cutting, unmistakably her:
Joe,
This is not your fault. You are a good man and a good firefighter. You deserve someone who truly loves you. I am not that person anymore. The lawyers will handle everything. Keep the house and all the furneture. I just need my personal things.
Good luck.
Schemmenti, M.
Galenaโs letter to Liam carried a softer, more melancholic tone, but the message was the same:
Liam,
I am so sorry about this. I know you will not understand, but I can not live a lie anymore. You deserve to be happy, and so do I.
I do not blame you, and there is nothing you can do to convince me to come back. The lawyers will handle the property and the division. I just want my freedom again.
Crawford, G.
Joe and Liam looked at each other, faces pale, eyes wide, a stunned silence hanging between them. The shock was raw, the pain visible, almost physical, pressing down on their chests. They did not understand that Melissa and Galena had not abandoned them, because they were the ones leaving them day after day, all over again after years of merriage. They had simply chosen a different path, a path toward happiness that neither of them could offer. A path they had found together, in each other. The apartment, once alive with laughter, shared meals, and the quiet rhythm of married life, now felt hollow, as if the very walls were mourning the absence of the women who had shaped their lives.

Chapter 06.
The doorbell rang once, twice, three times. Galena pounded on the door, heart hammering against her ribs, tears still hot on her face. She had not bothered to change, barely cared about driving. The only thing that mattered was Melissa. The door swung open. Melissa stood there, pale, eyes wide, and without a word, stretched out her arms, pulling Galena into a fierce embrace. The stylist surrendered completely, collapsing into Melissaโs warmth.
โI love you, Melissa. I love you more than you will ever know.โ she whispered, voice thick with emotion.
โI love you too, Lena. From the first time I saw you, I knew there was something different about you.โ Melissa replied, holding her tightly, as if letting go would shatter them both.ย
They pulled back slightly, hands still clasped. Galena looked into Melissaโs eyes and saw love there, no longer a spark or subtle tension, but a fire, raw and consuming.
โI am coming with you. Wherever you go, I go. If we have to, we will leave the city, even leave the state, I do not care! I just need you.โ Galena said, conviction threading through her trembling voice.
Melissaโs smile lit up her face, radiant and reassuring. โI do not know what I did to deserve you, Lee. But I am not letting you go. I can not.โ
Their lips met, a kiss that spoke louder than words ever could. It was passionate, intense, a longing repressed for too long, yet tender in its confession. The kiss promised a new beginning, a life of their own choosing. Melissa opened the apartment door again, breath still hitched, heart racing. She guided Galena inside, closing the door behind them. The apartment, once a home, now felt like a transitional space. Half-packed cardboard boxes littered the living room, silent testimony to the decision Melissa had made.
โI knew it, Gale,โ Melissa murmured, eyes fixed on Galena. โI knew this was gonna happen. I just did not know how fast.โ
โSoโฆ What do we do now?โ Galena asked, voice trembling but steady. โDo we just grab my stuff, your stuff, and leave?โย
Melissa shook her head with a wry smile. โNah. Joe and Liam are gonna come looking for us. They are probably already on their way. We leave them a note.โ
Together, they wrote a simple message, yet heavy with meaning:
We will not be back today. We are safe and okay. Needed some time for ourselves.
M & G.
They signed with both their initials, folded the paper, and placed it carefully on the kitchen counter.
Melissa packed a small bag and a backpack with essentials. Galena did the same, taking only a change of clothes she had left behind from a previous sleepover, and a toothbrush. Everything else she needed was already there in Melissaโs presence. They left the apartment without looking back. Melissa drove, the city lights fading behind them as they took the road leading to the mountains. Her old sedan glided smoothly under the night sky. They did not have to speak; their hands intertwined, silence filled with unspoken promises and the thrill of new beginnings.ย
The hotel they stopped at was small and isolated. A lonely lighthouse blinked in the distance, illuminating waves crashing against the shore. They checked in and headed to their room. Simple, clean, and smelling faintly of salt and sea.
โThis is good.โ Galena whispered, shrugging off her jacket. She was not talking about the room.
โI know,โ the teacher replied, settling onto the bed beside her. โI feel the same way.โ
They spent the night talking, laughing, and kissing. Now, the kisses were softer, less explosive, more grounding. A confirmation that they were finally where they belonged. The night stretched before them, a quiet prelude to the rest of their lives, full of warmth, and a love long denied.
Meanwhile, back in Philadelphia, Joe and Liam arrived at the apartment. They knocked on the door, but there was no answer. After a brief hesitation, they let themselves in, the silence inside pressing against them. The living room was littered with half-packed boxes, and the faint smell of cold pizza lingered in the kitchen. Their eyes were immediately drawn to a note left on the counter. We will not be back today. We are safe and okay. Need some time for ourselves.
โWhat the hell is this?โ Liam muttered, reading the note aloud, his brow furrowing. โThey left? Where would they go?โ Joe scratched his head, staring at the scattered boxes.
โIโฆ I do not know, man. Maybe Gale just helped Mel cool off. You know how she gets, right?โ Liam shook his head slowly, a mix of confusion and frustration twisting his features.
โYeahโฆ But why did they not call us? That isโฆ weird. Really weird.โ they wandered through the apartment, the silence echoing around them, amplifying the emptiness. The rooms felt larger, colder, as if the life they had always known had slipped through their fingers.
Neither of them had any idea that the two women they loved were already miles away, starting a life they could never imagine. They did not know that their worlds, as they knew them, had shifted irreversibly. All they could do was stand there, staring at the note, hearts heavy with confusion, powerless to grasp the new reality unfolding beyond the city limits.
