Btw if you're in North America, planting squash even if you don't like to eat it provides a vital food source for squash bees, which collect pollen exclusively from (you guessed it) squash flowers. And if you DO like to eat it, then you're getting food for yourself while also providing food for a very specialized native animal :)

Also!! If you want to see these bees in your garden then the best time to look for them is in the early morning, when the squash blooms are fully open! Squash blossoms close super early, so unless you want to pry them open looking for and disturbing the female bees that squeezed inside or the male bees just chilling and waiting for a mate to come by, morning is your best bet to see these lovely little bees visiting your flowers. A lot of blossoms will have two or three bees in them at once :)
