Creamy Roasted Tomato Basil Soup
A great way to switch up the typical plank exercise!
Be sure to keep your hips raised to avoid pain in your low back. It’s very common to allow the hips to drop when fatigue sets in, leading to a curve in the low back and resulting pain.

Staying Healthy Through the Holidays
1. Drink Water The holidays are always a mixture of family and friend reunions. It’s the time of the year when it’s acceptable to binge drink four or more nights in a row and not feel like your throwing your life and money away. It’s okay, it’s the holidays! The downside is that all of those holiday spirits can leave you extremely dehydrated. By attempting to maintain your water intake you’ll be less likely to overeat, you’ll help to detoxify your body naturally (decreasing those hangovers), and prevent the side affects of dehydration like headaches, drowsiness and constipation. Try mixing an alcoholic beverage with water, drinking a large glass of water before bed, or pairing an alcoholic beverage with a glass of water as you socialize.
2. Eat Raw Snacking on raw fruits, veggies and nuts is a great way to avoid limitless eating of refined processed carbs and sugary snacks. Carbs themselves are not bad, they are the master fuel source of the body, but refined and processed carbs are. These types of carbs contain large amounts of empty, non-nutritional calories which will lead to your body storing fat and subsequent weight gain. Sugary foods will also do the same. Eating raw will prevent abnormal blood insulin/sugar fluctuations, weight gain, will increase your fiber and water intake, and help decrease bloating.
3. Cardio & Weights Now is not the time to slack on workouts. With all of the socializing, eating and drinking, you want to look and feel your best. Instead of throwing workouts to the side due to a busy schedule, make the time. Maintaining a regular cardio & weight routine will help decrease bloating, increase metabolism, and help you finish the holidays not feeling like a blob of a human being.
4. Walk & Rest ‘Tis the season of late nights, early mornings and very little sleep. These patterns can lead to exhaustion, moodiness, irritability and can really put a damper on your holiday spirit. Be sure to take a little time for yourself to relax and have some quality down time. Trust me, everyone will be happier this way. A solo walk is always a great way to clear your head and get some fresh air. Also, if you’re walking after a meal, the easy movement will aid the digestion process without making you feel sick.
Happy Holidays! -KC
What’s With Waist Training?
I totally understand the struggle that most people face when attempting to lose weight- shit its hard! Lowering your calories intake, reading nutritional labels, avoiding cravings, trying to eat clean, carido days followed by weight days, followed by more cardio and weight days. So of course, when someone swears by a quick fix that offers a flat stomach, great figure, a little discomfort but less effort, most people jump all over it.
Thanks to celebrities and all that social media buzz waist training is now seen everywhere! The Kardashian’s swear by it to get their hour glass figures and flat stomachs (I mean Khloe Kardashian has been looking damn fine lately). Jessica Alba told Net-a-porter that she wore two corsets for three months straight, day and night, to get her pre-baby body back. Sounds like torture, but we all are struggling to have the perfect body, would all that pain be worth it? Debatable.
The truth is, waist training it rather old. Has anyone seen Pirates of the Caribbean? The scene where Elizabeth Snow (Keira Knightley) is getting dressed at the beginning of the movie. Her maid is tightening her corset, she pulls it so tight that Ms. Swan has difficulty breathing. All in the name of fashion during that time. Corsets were big then, they disappeared for a while, and now they’re back. So, should you do it? Well....probably not.
When you wear a waist trainer you’re actually squishing your ribs, lungs, and all of your internal organs. Stomach, intestines and liver just to name a few. This can make it hard to breath, cause acid reflux, bruise your ribs, and fracture your ribs if you're aggressive enough - just to name a few issues.
Still sound appealing? Well, the results that you might see, will not last. The shape which your body is being forced to take with the waist trainer is only temporary and will not last once you stop wearing the trainer. Also, you’re not actually losing fat when you’re losing inches with a waist trainer. You’re actually just pushing everything in. All of that fat will go right back to where it was as soon as you stop training that waist.
Well, that doesn’t sound fun. Temporary results, discomfort, you’re probably better off with a long term hard to reach plan that will offer real results. Much more challenging, but long lasting and worth it in the end! You feel a million times better about something when you work hard for it.

Flash Lunch: Three Ingredient Zucchini Salad
Some time last week I was inspired by an interesting Instagram picture of a unique salad. I was having one of those long days where after getting off work at 9 pm all I wanted was a large, freshly cooked, loaded with cheese, slice of pizza. Instead of giving in, because I knew how sluggish I would feel after the deliciousness that is late night pizza was in my belly, I headed to the grocery store to grab some fresh ingredients and also get creative.
Getting the groceries, driving home, cutting the zucchini, cooking & eating literally took a total of maybe 45 mins. A few days later, I made the dish in about 15 mins. Easy!
Confession: I love shellfish & I don’t mind a bit of bacon here and there (who doesn’t?)
Ingredients:
1 Zucchini, thinly sliced lengthwise
10-12 cooked small Scallops
3 pieces of Bacon, patted dry to remove excess fat
I love the look of veggies and fruit that are cut slightly differently, in a fancy manner, but I live in a student house, so my supplies are limited. I used a peeler (what you would normally use to peel potatoes) to get the thin zucchini slices.
Peel the zucchini as you cook the bacon and scallops, then throw it all together in a big giant bowl and enjoy all of the deliciousness.
I was thinking about adding a little squeeze of lemon or lime juice on top of the salad, but then it was so damn good on its own that I just didn’t bother.
Enjoy!

The Benefits of Eating Pumpkin- yes, you can do more then just carve the pumpkin this Halloween
I don’t know about you but I love fall in Canada. The changing colors of the leaves, the cooler temperatures, the boots, the knits- its just cool enough to wear a knitted sweater and look cute, but not so cold that you have to wear it under a parka and look like a marshmallow. The struggle.
Well, Halloween is a HUGE part of my favorite season. Even though I am not big into dressing up, I fall victim to the “fall” flavors and love pumpkin everything. Pumpkin Lattes, Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Seeds....the list goes on. Not only does pumpkin taste amazing, there are great benefits to eating pumpkin seeds (after you clean the pumpkin slimy innards off them of course) and pumpkin oils.
1. It natural detoxifies the body - raw pumpkin seeds and pumpkin oil contain chlorophyll, the green pigment found in all plants, which helps to cleanse your body naturally and detox the liver. Surprise, surprise, pumpkin contains the MOST chlorophyll than any other nut or seed
2. It’s loaded with fiber - pumpkin seeds are a magical little seed that makes you feel fuller for longer, improves your digestion and lowers your cholesterol. A great slimming snack!
3. It’s a good source of magnesium and zinc - pumpkin seeds and oils are high in magnesium and zinc, which support strong bones, increase your energy levels, and control blood sugar. They also help you maintain a strong and healthy immune system.
4. It’s a great source of iron - many people are iron deficient- especially women. Pumpkin seeds are rich in iron and are a great way to supplement your iron intake. Iron is important in increasing energy levels, boosting athletic performance, and concentration.
All of these benefits make me love pumpkins and pumpkin everything even more!! I’ve eaten so many pumpkin seeds so far the season- adding them to my salads and having them as quick snacks. Let me know how you guys enjoy your pumpkin treats by leaving a comment under the ask tab!
Happy Halloween!

Drinking milk isn’t a necessity
As a child, I remember my drink of choice was milk. I was never denied a glass of milk. It was considered a healthy alternative to sodas and juices with added sugars. Only white milk though. That was the milk with no added sugar or chocolate flavoring, or so we all thought.
As many of you know, I am lactose intolerant. Quite literally, one day my body was just decided “nope, we can’t do this lactose thing anymore” and I became SO sick. It was a struggle for months, and I was so confused with no idea what was happening to my body. I was being tested for diabetes, celiac, crohn’s disease and anything else my doctor felt was a potential cause for my symptoms. Finally, I figured it out. Onset of my symptoms only occurred after consuming a glass of milk, or yogurt (two things which I would incorporate into my diet daily). The problem was easily solved and life goes on pretty normally.
I remember asking my doctor why I suddenly had become lactose intolerant. For me it made zero sense. I knew people who were also lactose intolerant, but no one who had just suddenly become intolerant, most people had been intolerant since they were children. I certainly did not think that I had literally been consuming so many milk products that my body suddenly turned against digesting it (as a few people have suggested was my problem...). My doctor simply stated “It just happens sometimes. We’re not technically supposed to drink milk after infancy, and some people just cannot do it.”.
Humm...okay...but how and why does this happen?
After reading a little online I was getting mixed ideas about the cause of lactose intolerance, and also getting pretty frustrated determining legitimate sources of information from bogus ones. I was obviously still curious. One day I stumbled across the novel Got Milked By Alissa Hamilton and finally, I found some answers.
Just to be clear, I am not 100% against milk. For me, this book was a tool that I could use to answer the questions I had about my body and about what was happening to my body for it to suddenly make milk and every single milk product my mortal enemy.
Lets just say this novel was a total eye opener!
Alissa Hamilton argues that milk is not this super food that we all believe it to be. It’s actually depleting our bodies of calcium, rather than being a great source of calcium. She also proves that milk decreases the amount of iron our hemoglobin can readily absorb. Hemoglobin is also the oxygen binding component of our blood. Low iron = decrease in oxygen uptake = decreased energy and numerous other issue I won’t elaborate on. Iron is kind of a big deal. Iron deficiency, related to milk consumption, is so common in young children that the condition has been coined as a child being “milk sick”. Just one example of how our society and the information available to us has been manipulated by governing health bodies and dairy marketing campaigns. The dairy industry is a massive, mulit million dollar lucrative business. If they can convince people that milk is a great source of calcium, which is hard to find in other forms, then people will be more willing to purchase milk and consider it a daily necessity. The truth is that calcium is readily available in many other forms; collard greens (232 mg/100g), broccoli (118mg/100g), kale (205mg/100g), arugula (160mg/100g), butternut squash (48mg/100g), sweet potato (38mg/100g), and carrots (33mg/100g) just to name a handful.
Alissa made an interesting connection for lactose intolerance that truly made sense to me. Consider North American culture -we are a mix of beautiful backgrounds. There are have Europeans, Africans, Asians, Indigenous people, just to name a brief few. When examining lactose intolerance it has been found that those of African, Asian and Indigenous descent are more likely to be lactose intolerant then those of European descent. Why? Well, in European countries where the crops would not always flourish, people needed a source of nutritional value to help them survive. They began to create things like milk, butter, cream and cheese from cow’s milk when other food was scarce. Those who could not digest the lactose in these foods became very ill and sick, eventually dying. Those who could digest it, who’s gut produced lactase to break down the lactose, were able to survive and produce offspring. Natural selection! Today, many people of European descent have the ability to digest lactose, while others are lactose intolerant. It kind of makes sense right?
On a slightly different note:
We consume cow’s milk. Cow’s milk is meant for calves the same way that human breast milk is meant for babies. Naturally, milk from a mammal is meant to help the young achieve the necessary nutrients to grow. Once the mammal reaches a certain age, or size, milk is no longer required and nutritional needs are met in other ways via food ingestion and digestion. Typically, once a calf is weaned off of its mothers milk, it will never consume milk again in its lifetime. This is the same for every mammal, except humans. We drink the milk of cow’s. Why? We have been convinced that we require milk for calcium. Cow’s milk is meant for growing calves which are roughly 100 lbs at birth and grow 8x larger by the time they finish consuming their mothers milk...that’s a ton of growing! As humans we don’t need that, our children don’t require the extra growth hormones. Why are we drinking milk that is not meant for us?
Is it not twisted and odd? I think so. If anything this book has definitely given me another perspective on the whole milk think. Now I feel like I have grounds for a great discussion with someone on this topic.

Josef Salvat – Open Season (Gryffin Remix)
Flu Season
& I’m sick...
Annually, without fail, the change of the seasons hits me like a brick wall full of the flu. This year thankfully it is not the stomach bug- just the runny nose, achy, sore throat, coughing, fever, zero energy kind of sickness.
YAY...
I am honestly thankful I have avoided it for so long (also incredibly thankful it has hit me after a major exam and three days before another). All of my roommates were sick with some kind of the flu before mid-term break, it was like a cesspool of germs in this house...seriously. When I finally made it back to the west coast my mom was hit with sickness a few days before I left. Her parting words were “Drive safe, text me when you stop for gas, and I hope you don’t get sick” Classic Mom.
Around 3pm today, I finally dragged myself out of my bed for a grapefruit & a shower. Touching base with mom in regular fashion she immediately suggest hot water, lemon, and honey.
Although I did forget to pick up oranges on my last shopping adventure, I did grab a fresh lemon. Score!
I am now three large, boiling water cups deep into the concoction and it is honestly the best. It’s easing the throat pain & helping me finally be somewhat productive with my day. Highly recommended!!!
Here are some tips to help all of you lucky people who aren’t already sick avoid flu season:
1. Wash your hands frequently-especially after sneezing/coughing & before you eat.
2. Sharing is caring, yes, but not in flu season. Avoid it.
3. Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes.
4. Get enough sleep to avoid being “run down” - I am convinced a weekend of work, friends, studying and the stress of a major exam is what brought this flu on
5. Reduce your stress- maybe attend a yoga class, always helps me
6. Eat right & exercise regularly
7. Avoid those who you know are ill
and my favorite...
8. If you are sick stay home from work or school
