What is Ironycore?

Ironycore is an aesthetic and fashion style centered around ironic humor and pieces considered ‘ugly’ or ‘tacky’ by the owner. Ironycore focuses less on aestheticly pleasing outfits but rather on making a joke through decor or outfit choice. While Ironycore is not strictly fashion based- this post will focus more on the fashion aspect… as this is a fashion blog.

Ironycore Essentials

To call something ironycore it must find the sweet balance of being ironic but also not intentionally. Graphic tees which clearly do not pertain to the wearer are a staple of ironycore. For example, a white man wearing a shirt that reads “I Love being a Black Woman” or a young girl wearing a shirt that reads “My greatest blessings call me Papa”

While graphic tees with funny slogans on them can be part of ironycore, it is important that they are funny because they are in complete juxtaposition to the wearer. Wearing a shirt that says “This girl loves horseback riding, getting dirty, and daytime dramas” could work but if you are dressed too much like a girl who may like horseback riding and daytime dramas- the irony may be lost. However if it makes you laugh then it is still a great piece.

Ironycore at its very… core, is about expressing something that makes you laugh and bringing yourself joy. If wearing shirts from jobs you’ve never worked in your life, or wearing a hat that says “Women want me, fish fear me” is funny to you- ironycore is the perfect style for you.

Another aspect of ironycore is wearing tacky items of clothing. It must be noted that these items don’t have to be big statement pieces. But if you find them funny to wear with the outfit it is a good match. For instance- wearing a completly goth outfit with cowboy boots and a cowboy hat could be funny to you. Or wearing a summer outfit with snow boots. Something that screams “That’s not right” Cohesive outfits are for suckers.

Ironycore is also like a cheese that can pair well with other substyles. For example, a punk look wearing an ironic tshirt or hat can be a blend of the Punk subculture and ironycore. Or wearing Y2K fashion with a funny bratz meme on your shirt. It lends itself to a lot of mixes.

Ironycore isn’t hyper specific- it’s whatever you find funny. The only real requirement for something to be ironycore is… to wear something ironically. If you are wearing a creeper shirt because you genuinely love minecraft that’s not ironycore. That’s just fun. But if you are a staunch atheist wearing a shirt saying “Jesus is my best friend and teacher” that’s a knee slapper.
