The Defender is a 4x4 utility vehicle and can be used in all situations. I have often put a chair on my bonnet at an air show, climbed onto the bonnet to open my rooftop tent or had my kids use it as their personal jungle gym. If I never had my fender and bonnet tread plates, I am sure the damage would be terrible. An interesting fact about the Land Rover is that its defining features and strong assets were due to the austerity measures presented by World War II. The body was built using leftover aluminium from the war effort, which was more readily available.
