P.S. by Franz Wright
unconvinced i'll ever find "the vitamin" that makes me all better so i can get real work done but i do expect they'll elucidate whatever my deal was post-mortem, after which what i did manage to accomplish with my life will be regarded on the level of Beethoven composing despite being deaf or Gordon Ramsay cooking despite being british
βHands weaving magnetic-core memory, IBM, Poughkeepsie, New York,β 1956. Photograph by Ansel Adams.
My mother used to make computer cores as a "work from home" side business. As a child I got spending money via un-winding the ones that failed testing so that the magnetic center could be re-used. I got between $0.05 and $0.25 per core depending. Mom got more for the finished ones, of course, though I don't know how much. Her sister was an expert, and did the more complicated kind, some of which ended up in satellites and/or were used by NASA!
They were all done by hand using a kind of treadle-operated frame with a little (crochet!) hook to pull the wires around the cores. The people making them were mostly housewives who did this as a side-job in the 80s and 90s. I don't know if it's still done that way anywhere in the USA today, but the history of computing and space exploration is littered with "women's work" like this.
love the word fruitless. arguing with you is like if there was no apples involved whatsoever

a good thing about having friends with kids is that you can just sow the seeds for something that youβll never need to address again. like tonight my friendβs three year old saw me eating blue corn chips.
kid: what are you eating from that basket?
me: triangles.
kid: can i have triangles?
me: dunno, did you brush teeth yet?
kid: no
me: mhm, and are you okay with screaming really loud?
kidd: what???
me: yeah, sometimes these make you scream really loud, are you ok with that?
kid: i am not afraid of screaming.
me: youβre very brave. you can have two triangles. then why donβt you go show your dad your new power, i gotta go.
op u live up to ur username
Checking back in years later as a person who now has a four year old and a six year old and finally understands just how awful it is to have small children randomly screeching at maximum volume in a way that only someone with lived experience can
this is still very, very funny.
this may be one of the funniest things iβve ever done actually.
a good thing about having kids is that you can just sow the seeds for something that youβll never need to address again. i mean, you probably should, but you donβt gotta. like a few weeks ago, I taught the kids all about the F word and why - even though it has incredible conversational utility - you shouldnβt say it because itβs a very very bad swear word and people will get upset.
I also taught them that the F word is, uh, βflinkleβ
they are little potty mouths and it is so so so so so so funny to hear them on a flinkle rampage
In my defense, I didnβt make them myself, I just met a hot dude with kids and made them my own
That has got to be the funniest way to describe being a stepparent
βPeople who talk about revolution and class struggle without referring explicitly to everyday life, without understanding what is subversive about love and what is positive in the refusal of constraints- such people have a corpse in their mouth.β
β Raoul Vaneigem
side note, teaching myself to pronounce that last one felt like learning a new fucking language
hey so uh next year will be a decade of dobonhonkeros. how about that shit huh.
Happy ten year anniversary of this post.

also a poem from the new, unreleased collection. very possibly my own all-time favourite.
"less is more" is a lie perpetuated by big small to sell more less
