When you were looking for a voice to meld with yours, to guide your steps and tell your story, whose did you choose? Your blueprint of the self has been pieced together with scraps—innuendos in old books on library shelves, lyrics in the liner notes of CD's, a PDF of Stone Butch Blues, xerox-copied until the letters are blurred and shaky. You taught yourself to knot a tie, give yourself a haircut in the bathroom mirror, roll up the sleeves of your t-shirt for cigarettes you won't smoke. Listen—there's something you can hold onto, in that voice on the radio, reaching out to show you a door, a road… a world remade through desperate, romantic dreams.
