oathbound
romcom where turgon accidentally builds gondolin on top of nargothrond and increasing ridiculous sequences of events stop both cities from noticing
little lies
It is a family joke that Maitimo was the easiest birth of the seven. None of FΓ«anΓ‘ro's children question this, not even Maitimo himself. After all, he is steady and patient, the best little-brother wrangler and the favourite small-child babysitter. Of course it would be him, out of all of them, who gave their mother the least amount of trouble even in the womb.Β
It is also a lie.Β
Most do not remember Nerdanelβs pregnancy, for she spent the bulk of it at Mahtanβs house, far away from the eyes and speculation of Tirionβs court. Safely hidden among her family, FΓ«anΓ‘ro watched with growing horror as things began to go wrong. The babyβs spirit seemed to share FΓ«anΓ‘roβs fire, burning white-hot inside of Nerdanel. For months she lay in bed, feverish, delirious.Β
FΓ«anΓ‘ro refused to leave her side, trying to coax drops of water between her dry, cracked lips. βPlease, love,β he begged. βJust a little more, only one more sip. Please.β
Nerdanel placed his hand on her stomach. βDo you feel him, FΓ«anΓ‘ro? He is so strong already. Too strong for someone like me.β
βNo, no, you must not speak that way. He will need you. I need you.β He kissed her forehead. Be kind to your mother, little one, he thought, placing a hand on her stomach. He could feel the baby burning like a coal within her. Gentle your flame! Please. I do not want you to be born with my grief. I do not know if I have the strength of my own father to carry on if my wife dies.Β
Please, please, do not die.Β
It was a close thing, a night of screaming and blood and too much pain, but in the end Nerdanel survived the birth of their child. She smiled up at FΓ«anΓ‘ro, soaked in sweat, glowing with pride. βLook at him, FΓ«anΓ‘ro,β she said, her eyes half-closed. βLook at our child. Our perfect Maitimo.β
βHe is the most wonderful child in the world,β said FΓ«anΓ‘ro, his heart breaking open with love. That love sat side-by-side with terror, for Nerdanel remained weak and could not leave her bed for a whole year. But soon, she recovered, returning to her craft and chasing their little one around the hallways of their house.
FΓ«anΓ‘ro would have been happy with just the one. To ask for more felt like asking for trouble, and FΓ«anΓ‘ro did not want to risk Nerdanelβs life. Not a second time. But Nerdanel wanted more children.Β
βYou promised me at least four,β she reminded FΓ«anΓ‘ro, half-teasing and half-serious. βAnd our Maitimo needs a sibling or three to get into trouble with. Look at how perfect our little one is! How can you not want more?β
βI do want more children,β said FΓ«anΓ‘ro. βOf course I do. But I do not want to lose you.β
βYou wonβt,β promised Nerdanel, stronger than iron.
And so MakalaurΓ« was soon born, screaming loud enough to shake the windowpanes, and then Tyelkormo, always full of energy, and then Carnister and CurufinwΓ« and the twins. Each birth sent FΓ«anΓ‘ro into a spiral of worry; each one ending in relief and joy.Β
None of them as terrifying or hard as Maitimoβs had been.
No one knew the truth and FΓ«anΓ‘ro, who did not want his first-born to grow up under the same shadows as he had, was more than happy to spread the lie. FinwΓ« and Nerdanel and Mahtan agreed. Let Maitimo never know how close he came to killing his mother. Let him live free of such a stain.
Let the white-fire of his soul burn bright and remain ignorant of the truth.

Ok but the fact that Nelyo lived so many years, being (canonically) the elf who fought more wars than any other, and no one but himself could end him its something that haunts me in many ways.
happy pride month :]

Thinking about the Mingling of the Two Trees of Valinor. Laurelin the gold and Telperion the silver were the sources of light for thousands of years. Like the lamps constructed before them and the sun and moon after them, the two trees shone in turn, one illuminating the lands for a period before the other.
Telperion, the Silver tree, would emit light and, before it began to wane, Laurelin began to glow. At these crossovers, their light entwined in threads of warm gold and sparkling silver.
Nightingales flocked to the lands beneath the trees, and their song melded with that of flowing water flecked with light.
Thinking about the last Mingling, where Fingolfin and FΓ«anor stood amid flecks of silver and gold, unaware that they would never again. An unease surrounding them amid the vines of light.
I think a lot about the cultural trauma of the Darkening. The trees were lost and so was so much tradition around them, including this phenomenon.
The Mingling was clearly an event that the elves of Valinor held dear. It was said that Melian sang in the gardens of Irmo during the hours of Mingling and all else would fall silent.
There are so many words for twilight across elven languages. I wonder if this is an attempt to preserve this phenomenon in their memory.

hc Maglor and Maedhros being very close in age (our equivalent of 2 to 4 years apart?) so they grow up deeply intertwined in Tirion, where Maedhros being the heir doesn't really mean all *that much*, at least not to KanafinwΓ« MakalaurΓ« most renowned bard of the Noldor anyway, so they stand on equal footing, they move as a pair, they're equals. And then Beleriand changesΒ *everything*. Maedhros becomes king and then after his return he is still Maglor's liege and now Maglor cannot simply talk back to him but he must obey. And Maedhros is no longer merely his brother, no longer his closest confidant, and Maglor must guard his back even when he feels like hitting it himself really. So who is Maglor now who is Maedhros where does the brother end and the vassal begin
And it's harder than he thought you know. Maglor struggles to take Maedhros seriously at first because he had never really thought much about Maedhros' position but now it is real. And while he becomes Maedhros' right hand (no pun intended) helping build the reputation of The One Who Came Back From Thangorodrim unscathed, unvanquished, he starts believing his own chants, and Maedhros becomes something far removed from him now - not an elf at all, how could Maglor possibly resemble this white flame that is his lord and still his king. Because if Maedhros is merely an elf, if Maedhros is simply the brother, the brother he knows so intimately, if Maedhros is fallible then what

I pretend to be complex and clever but in reality, nothing has ever made me laugh harder than those bad Chinese subtitles from the bootleg Lord of the Rings DVDs. Tears streaming down my face, core aching, slowly suffocating because Iβm laughing too hard.

and my personal favorite:
I somehow forgot to add my own favorite, which is this one:
I also appreciate the ones that really change the tone and suggest that the characters openly loathe each otherβ¦
and this one, which gently encourages self-care:
