There’s been a TON written about AI. From the way it was trained to whether it can be made useful. One thing I ran across recently was an anticipated impact on the mental durability of the people who use it. Use of AI reduces your brain’s engagement. This can increase the risk and severity of dementia and alzheimers disease. We already see it in seniors who are in the risk zone anyway. Several specialists anticipate increased numbers of these diseases at earlier ages because we are training our brains to be lazy.
As someone who had these problems in their family tree, I’ve always been concerned with ways to keep my mind active. Things that have been tried and true recommendations are logic puzzles and staying active. Recently, I also read that becoming fluent in another language significantly delays the onset of alzheimers.
So, AI is made from stolen work, it makes pretty crappy output, the data centers required take insane amounts of water, it definitely increases suicide attempts (and successes) in vulnerable populations, but it also makes our brains more inclined to decline. So, why are we continuing to let companies shove it down our throats?
