One major criticism I have with the Backrooms movie is that there is yet another unflattering depiction of someone with schizophrenia (or at least some kind of paranoid psychosis).
She's abusive to her child, ranting about delusions while she scares her kid and then is shown being wheeled off in a mental asylum with a dead look on her face while her daughter watches.
That was so completely unnecessary. We in no way needed another movie character that goes "psychotic people are scary and abusive and will hurt you, so we should lock them up for their own good in mental asylums"
There are million other ways to showcase a mother who is suspicious of the outside, who instills the fear of others without making the most vulnerable look like demons. (And no I'm not saying he should've made her OCD)
That trope is so overplayed and so dehumanizing, it honestly ruined a part of the movie for me because I dont want to see that shit. Horror that goes "wouldnt it be scary if there was a mentally unwell person in your life" isn't creative, its overdone and uninspired and directors shouldn't push this extremely insulting narrative onto its audience.
