This is a capitalist system so yeah rainbow capitalism is not real pride but it is/was also a reflection of the fact that queer people could be visibly queer and considered worth marketing to. It also carried with it the implication that it was at the very least socially risky to be queerphobic. At least openly.

This does not make brands “allies” or “woke”. It’s a barometer.

or: Plural Characters Without Plural Representation

i wrote an essay about plurality and representation in this one audio drama but also kinda in general. it's written without any knowledge of the show required. mostly it's thinking through, like, maybe "representation" isn't a great model for thinking of plurality (at least) in fiction, "accidental plurality" in fiction, and maybe we shouldn't pester authors for representation or explicit identity labeling when reading is where the meaning is made anyway, idk.

Centering my focus on the ones in the foreground make all the moments in the background feel like moments that illustrate the complexities this relationship

Centering my focus on the Cal seated alone on the wall in his old Fleet Foxes t-shirt make it feel like he is surrounded by memory.

And that I am being reminded that he is one of many Mikeys. And that despite being one of many, his role at the compound has isolated him. Even this loving relationship (because for all that it is distorted by the compound it is, without question, a loving relationship) with Viridian, cannot solve this specific loneliness. Because as much as Viridian might wish it, he cannot be all things to Cal. And he shouldn't be anyway.
