As soon as they introduced Jack as the progeny who will be more powerful than his ancestors, you know how it's going to end. There is the occasional reference to things that are older being inherently more powerful, but only when it fits their narrative (and this is probably what makes creating Nephilim taboo). The only thing that really surprised me was that God was really truly the Creator - that the old Pagan gods and Nature spirits weren't really the first, that God wasn't a late-comer who decided to insert Himself earlier in the story because His ego is that big (and of course exactly how The Confession sceneS played out -both of 'em. I mean come on, I'm a sucker for tsundere characters.). Then when Jack kills God, like in Norse mythology and most every other mythos I can think of, the children assume the power of their fathers and the older generations fade away with time, as with the lives and stories of Man.

It's modern commentary on how droll tropes have become. Story archetypes and memes are an efficient communication tool. If one adheres to the blueprint, one can focus on characters and plot instead of wasting energy on having to teach the reader a new language or framework to understand the message. This is what made fan meta-analysis so accurate. Supernatural is this kind of meta narrative from almost the beginning, from the ending, to Mary Sue God Himself, to Metatron, to the continuous repetition of the Apocalypse Cain-and-Abel storylines, to Gabriel telling them to "play their part." It's always been a story about stories and breaking from tradition. We were always going to end up here.

I do wish they'd done more with the yin-yang dynamic of Dark and Light in the same vessel, but they clearly ran out of time. Plus side: wrapping the story up quickly leaves the viewer in a fuge state where their body thinks the story will continue, so they have to sit with the ending for a bit to digest it. I kind of enjoy those endings. Could this have been cleaner? Sure, but when you account for economics and executive will, it's the ending you get.

To end on a positive note, I know I only know one religion super well, but I enjoyed how much the show's lore was similar to Mormon Creationism. Maybe other sects of Christianity have a similar way of explaining the universe, idk, but the cosmic science of it all was nostalgic.
