Enjoy Life

Anytime you find joy in things, that joy is in you. When you find joy in a connection with another person, that joy is in you. As you coordinate fun things to do and people to be with, you are creating circumstances for you to find your joyful mindspace. The joy is always in you.

When you think of joy as being in things, you will always look to things and circumstances to bring you joy. When those things or circumstances are not present or if you are stuck doing something that you consider joyless, you will find misery and tedium as you do them. When you believe that whether you feel joy or not is based in your response to things, you can look to yourself to find joy in many more situation. When you are not enjoying what you are doing, don’t blame the activity, but look into your reaction. When you do that, and challenge your habitual responses, the narrow path of joyful things becomes much wider.

As you do things you enjoy, notice the wide variety of ways you find joy in yourself. As you practice finding joy in yourself, you need less elaborate things to evoke that joyful response. You can enjoy taking a shower or washing dishes. Washing dishes is generally not a joyful kind of thing, but you can feel joy in doing it if you are not consumed with finding misery in the task.

There will always be circumstances that bring you joy or bring you down, but when you look to your own response as the source of the feeling, you can deal with any circumstance. You won’t always be joyous, but when you do it regularly it gets easier. Conversely, if you often practice finding misery in things and circumstances that will be your stronger habit. Life isn’t all full of joy. You instill your joy into it. You enjoy life.

Three Poisons

The roots of our suffering are the three poisons, desire, anger and ignorance. Desire and anger seem manageable, ignorance seems huge. Ignorance, in this case, is ignorance of our true nature, our Buddha nature. Realizing our buddha nature is basically attaining enlightenment. It is feeling, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that we are Buddha. It seems that if we were to realize our true nature, and rid ourselves of ignorance, that desire and anger may just fall by the wayside.

Recognizing our true nature can take an entire lifetime, or many lifetimes some believe. Zen is good that way. Zen practice aims at helping you find your true nature in this lifetime. Eckhart Tolle seems to think you can recognize this right now. Alan Watts also believes that awakening is available in any given moment, if you give yourself to the moment. Who you choose to believe may have something to do with how patient you are. Regardless of how long it takes to dispel this ignorance, it seems a large task.

Anger and desire are certainly more accessible, but they may not be easier to dispel. They could well be the keys to tackling ignorance. The first step in addressing anger is taking ownership of it. If you want to end your suffering, you can no longer afford to let other things make you angry. You may still get angry, but you have to see your anger as a choice you make, an emotional option. Then, pay close attention to your anger and see how it affects you and those around you. Anger is likely the easiest of the three poisons to manage.

Desire is a good poison to work with because it is almost always present. The only time desire is not present is in those fleeting moments when you are content. As soon as restlessness resumes, desire is driving it. If you were able to pay attention to your desire whenever it arises, you would live a mindful life.

If you suffer, you suffer from these three poisons. No matter how far out your mental health may be, these poisons are affecting you. I just thought you should know.

In his essay, “Masculinity as Spectacle,” Steve Neale seeks to extend Laura Mulvey’s work on the male gaze and to challenge her assertion that the male or male-identified spectator can never look upon the male body as an erotic object. To challenge Mulvey’s assertion, Neale identifies the mechanisms mainstream Hollywood cinema uses to represent the male body as erotic. One way of doing this, Neale argues, is by making the male body the target of violence. In the war film, a soldier can hold his buddy – as long as his buddy is dying on the battlefield. In the western, Butch Cassidy can wash the Sundance Kid’s naked flesh – as long as it is wounded. In the boxing film, a trainer can rub the well-developed torso and sinewy back of his protege – as long as it is bruised. In the crime film, a mob lieutenant can embrace his boss like a lover – as long as he is riddled with bullets. Violence makes the homoeroticism of many “male” genres invisible; it is a structural mechanism of plausible deniability.

I’m so glad I’m seeing more and more Lundy Bancroft quotes on my dash because this book CHANGES THE LIVES OF ABUSE VICTIMS. The programs run for rehabilitating abusive men through the courts? Bancroft DESIGNED THEM. His programs are replicated ALL OVER THE WORLD. He literally wrote THE book on abuser rehabilitation.
