Feels Like Hope
âPaddy! Â Help!â
Paddy Kirk jumped and dropped the tray of gauze heâd been holding as the last person heâd expect to see came charging into his vet surgery.
Robert Sugden, recently reunited with his Aaron, was holding his hand against his chest as though cradling something inside of his leather jacket.
âW-What do you want?â
Robert unzipped his jacket and for a terrible moment, Paddy thought he was going to pull out a gun.
Instead he pulled out a tiny ball of fur which fit completely in his large hand.
âYouâre a vet arenât you?â Robert said.  âCan you help him⌠her?â
Paddy snapped out of his fear and jumped into professional mode. Â He took the tiny kitten from Robert.
âHer,â he confirmed, placing her on the exam table. âWhere did you find her?â
âI was parked in a layby making a phone call,â Robert told him. Â There was this plastic bag on the grass up ahead and it was moving. Â Thought it was the wind at first but none of the leaves were bothered so I went to check.â
Paddy shook his head. Â âWas she alone?â
âNo. Â There were three others. Â Hard as rocks. Â This little one though,â Robert stroked the top of her tiny head with one of his fingers. There was a patch of dark fur covering the top of her head to just below her eye line. Â The rest of her fur was various shades of browns and oranges. âStuck her head out and started gnawing at my finger right away.â
âWell sheâs well hungry. Â But youâve kept her warm. Â Was she in your coat the whole time?â
âYeah. Â Surprised Iâm not all carved up with those little knives at the end of her feet.â
âToo weak for that at the moment. Â Give her a few days.â
âSo you can help her?â
Paddy put a stethoscope in his ears.  âLungs are clear.  Heartâs strongâŚâ  He took the device off.  âI think once we get some food and vitamins in her, sheâll be fine. In a few days.â
He was surprised at the look of relief on Robertâs face.
âAre you keeping her?â Â Paddy asked.
Robert shrugged one shoulder. Â âSâpose I could.â
âSheâll need a name.â
Robert smirked. Â He stroked the top of her head
âFurryosa.â
Paddy furrowed his brow.
âFrom Mad Max?â
Robert raised an eyebrow. Â It appeared that the two men finally had something in common.
âThatâs Furiosa. Â Sheâs Furryosa. Â Arenât you dear?â
The kitten looked up at Robert and gave a week little mew.
âSee. Â She likes it.â
âWell, sheâll need a few days here. Will Victoria be okay with a new housemate?â
âLike Vic could turn away a face like this.â
âShe does have a habit of taking in strays.â
âOi!â
âRight. Â Shot time.â
âPaddy that needle is bigger than she is.â
âLook at you being the protective dad.  âŚErm⌠Sorry.â
Robert didnât respond, just crouched down to Furryosaâs eye line so that she could watch him and not the metal spike Paddy was loading.
It had been just over a month past when the truth had come out.  Robert wasnât Sebastienâs father.  Nor was Ross. Rebecca had thought she was pregnant⌠Thought it was Rossâs, but wanted it to be Robertâs.  The trick being that Robert had apparently passed out before he could do the deed.  When Rebecca had gone to the hospital with abdominal pains, sheâd been told that she was not pregnant, just some hormonal shifting of some kind.  But she still saw this as a chance to claim Robert.  So under the guise of leaving the country, sheâd actually gone down to London and been artificially inseminated and tried passing the child off as Robertâs.  It was working until 4 month old Sebastian had developed a virus that needed blood and neither Rebecca nor Robert were a match.  Rebecca had left the village after that with Chrissie; Lachlan was still banged up for killing his grandfather and attempting to kill Robert. One might think Robert would be glad to be rid of the family, but Paddy had him around the village with Seb. Whatever else Paddy might think of him, it was obvious that Robert was a doting dad.  Heâd had a haunted look about him since theyâd gone. Â
âHow old is she?â Â Robert asked.
âNo more than a week.â Â Paddy put the needle in and Furryosa gave out a little cry.
âDone,â Paddy said, taking the needle out.  âSheâll need feeding by bottle for the next while. I can do it orâŚâ
âNo, I can do it.â
Paddy set Robert up in a chair with the kitten wrapped in a towel and left him with a bottle of formula.
And if he secretly snapped a photo and sent it to AaronâŚ
Well⌠He could always claim he was just testing out his new phone.
