It had been years, years since that fatefull day.
Most days you didnt miss them, not anymore. It had taken time, to stop missing them. Years of slow forgetting. To clear your house of every reminder, to stop hearing them calling to you in your mind.
On beautifull days when the sun rained their warmth over a cloudless sky, the longing still returned. On those days, you went hiking through the mountains. It was the reason you moved here, for the view, the memories, the fragile sense of belonging and freedom. You told yourself it was enough. But deep down you knew it wasnt. You missed them.
On darker days where the world showed its grime, when everything went wrong, every door seeme to close, you missed them even more. you missed the feeling of safety they gave you. The peace.
Today you saw them, your beautifull partner standing right before you, magnificent wings spread behind their back. The same wings they once said had to be taken away. They step closer up to you with a letter in their hand. " I had to," they say "Read this to understand." before you can respond, they take flight, rising towards the sky and vansishing into the light. Gone again. All the progress you had made, shattered.
That day, you remember, they had said: "The wings have to go, I'm sorry" then they had packed their things and left. No reason, no explanation, no nothing.
Tomorrow curiosity born out anger will lead to you opening the letter. In it you will learn the truth. Heaven had been hunting you for your sins. Your partner had chosen to bear your burden, to take your place. At the end of the letter they had written: "Meet me by the Apple, tree in a week, If you still want anything to do with me."
After a week of long talks with your friends and therapist you will go. Hope trembling inside, you will walk to the tree. There you will find them, your lover, laying against the trunk with a divine sword buried in their stomach. "One soldier" They will whisper, "have found me. The struck before i could flee." You will fall to your knees, begging, pleading. But the only Smiled through the pain. "You're safe now, they wont come again. Thats all that matters." And then they were gone
It has been a day since that fateful day, the day your lover died in your arms, yesterday you found what had been lost, only to lose it again. Your wings, your lover, both gone.
