(Because this hurts my heart and I want a happy ending)
Whumpee is two seconds from turning tail and running, escaping before they can be rejected again, when they catch winged!caretakerâs eye, and their name rings out amongst the crowd.
âHey you! Youâre Whumpee, right?â
Here it comes. The mocking, the taunting, just like with Whumperâwhere they were both a freak for being themselves, and a freak for not being good at being themselves. Whatâs wrong with your wings? You look pathetic. Youâre not good enough to be here.
But, theyâve been taught better than to ignore a direct address, so their spine straightens, they suffocate a wince when they wings spasm, and they face caretaker. âThat- that would be me, yes,â they manage, bracing themselves.
âWe heard you were new here,â caretaker says, coming over with two friends in tow. âFigured you could use a friend or two, right?â
Whumpee blinked. âCome again?â
âSome friends,â caretaker repeated easily. âEspecially since it looks like youâre gonna start molting soon, and thatâs not really easy to do by yourself.â
Whumpeeâs heart gave a kickstart and started racing, the breath escaping their lungs a little. âM-molding?!â
Caretakerâs eyes went a little wider, hands up in placating. âNo! No, sorry. I meant molting, the thing when your feathers fall out to make room for another coat, so you stay healthy.â
Whumpee stared at them for a moment.
There was a word for it? All this time, they thought it was just illness, their nature punishing them for being abnormal, like whumper always said when their feathers fell out. It always made room for plucked chicken jaunts.
âItâs hard to do it right by yourself,â one of caretakerâs friends jumped in, no less kind. âAnd there arenât a lot of us outside of communities like this one, but now youâre with the rest of your kind, weâd be happy to help!â
Whumpee swallowed heavily and tried not to look like they were about to cry. âYouâre⌠offering?â
âYeah!â The third one said. âDonât want you to be feeling left out now, do we?â
They nearly choked on their own breath, and bobbed their head in an eager, desperate nod. âYeah. Yes- please, help. That would be⌠Thank you.â
