I'm a corset centrist. I think it's reasonable for historical fiction characters to not like corsets, but I reserve the right to roll my eyes in that scene in Bridgerton where they tightlace the girl before putting her in an empire waist dress.

#i dont like bras! some people just dont #the thing is authors overlook really thinking about what that says about their charicter because theyre thinking about corsets less #as a garment and more as a symbol #maybe theyre hypermobile or have slipping rib syndrome #maybe theyre lactose intolerant and spend their lives feeling ill all the time #maybe they have sensory issues or tight clothes make them feel clostrophobic #maybe theyre dysphoric! #maybe its a hand me down that doesnt quite fit #my charicter doesnt like corsets should be the begining of asking what your charicters sensory world is
This is a really good point/set of points. I've gone on and on before about why most women wouldn't have been that bothered by their corsets so I don't want to bother rehashing it, but this is the flipside of that aspect.
It really, really is not inherently a problem to have your character(s) not like the feeling of wearing a corset. But it is bad writing to repeatedly use the same cliché characterization. If you're determined to go with this, don't just be like "well she's too free-spirited and modern" and call it a day (and if you do see this cliché criticized, please stop accusing the critics of being dumb misogynists, it just makes you look like you don't know enough about the historical genre to be aware that it's a cliché).
THIS
you can use not liking corsets to say something about your character! You just have to get past the idea that not liking corsets is a default state of any woman with a brain!
Even if she dislikes them on principle or for proto-feminist reasons, there has to be something about the sensation of them that she finds impeding to her life (which not all women did). Is it about difficulty bending at the waist, and if so, what about her life means that she needs to bend at the waist so badly and hasn't adapted her wardrobe to do so? Is she making and selling a patented corset alternative and therefore has a financial as well as possibly a philosophical stake in the question? Does she wear one of the many alternatives that were on the market in real life? Does she not experience any particular discomfort from corsets, but has a purely principled objection to them? If so, why? What does she think women should do for breast support instead? Or is she very small breasted and doesn't understand the discomfort many women experience in going without support?
you could do a lot with this if you weren't falling back on the tired old "well, obviously anyone worth listening to would dislike them because they're corsets and corsets are evil torture devices!" Shorthand
Oof. I just put a batch of vintage clothing in to soak, which is a whole big production requiring putting a plastic tub in my bathtub (because they’re going to be soaking for at least a full day and I still need to shower in there tomorrow) and filling it up with yellowed dresses and Retro Clean.
This time I decided that historical laundresses probably knew what they were doing, and grabbed a metal pole to stir my DIY laundry cauldron and poke the floaty bit back under the surface. Historical laundresses were right, it works great.
As I stood there, I had a moment where I though, ‘oh wow, so many women in my family tree must have done this exact set of motions throughout history.’ Which should be a humbling and heartwarming feeling of connection, right?
Wrong. I swear I could feel twenty generations of shtetl women going “For this you went to college? You want to work with old shmattes all day, fine, but you could have saved the tuition to buy a house.”
And like. They’re right, but hey.
every farming game is either called sunshine ranch and it's about a guy with a lot of free time and a concept of a farm that's more akin to a petting zoo or it's called mass industrial agriculture farming tycoon simulator and it's basically a spreadsheet where you get to drive a tractor and look at pngs of a corn monoculture
gay men brought back 70s mustaches, lesbians brought back 80s mullets, and now straight dudes are just walking around with both thinking they stumbled onto this styling choice by accident. say the line meryl (cerulean sweater monologue but specifically about how gay culture creates taste)

The whole movie scene where Grace calls Stratt to say that Carl and him made a baby is made 1000% funnier when you remember that this was the scientist she selected to be the first to study the completely unpresidented and unknown alien life form, and if this alien lifeform had a horrifying and unpresidented effect on human biology then Dr. Grace would have been the first to have shown any symptoms.
Do you think she had a moment of terror? of belief? Do you think her fingers twiched over her tablet ready to give the orders to quarentine everyone who ever interacted with the apperently slow acting mpreg microbe? Did her mind go to every Alien movie and ao3 trope that could have explained the situation? Did she wonder briefly about the ethical and political implications of keeping a maybe sentient maybe alien child? with human parent(s)???? in a pseuto-governmental lab?
Did she wonder exactly what Carl's role in this is? Because even if shes only known Dr. Grace for three days max and cannot yet be certain of the immence aroace vibes the man radiates Carl is a professional on the job so how was he involved?? Is he just the embodyment of the "not the step father but the father who stepped up"???? should she buy him a t-shirt with that phrase?????? Is he biologically involved in a way that only a biologist of esoteric slime molds or insects or sea cucumbers would recognise?????? Is she going to have to kidnap a mycologist to understand this????????? What exactly is her policy on paternity leave according to Project Hail Mary's closest orginizational structure to an HR department and how is she going to explain this to the UN.
growing increasingly invested in the dynamic of the classic Bureau of Balance crew (Carey & Killian, Johann, Avi, Robbie Pringles, etc) all being buddies, except periodically one of them at a time will get possessed by a powerful lich who is trying very hard to pretend he's just a normal member of the Bureau like everyone else, nothing to see here.
I think Barry knows all their names, favorite foods, and interpersonal drama. after the Story & Song the Bureau crew obviously all know a weird amount about the Seven Birds' personal lives, but are shocked to discover that it goes both ways, and Barry knows just as much about them. and they just think... yeah, this might as well happen. this friendgroup was already so goddamn weird. add that lich to the group chat

This is why Pride is not just a party. It's a joyful celebration, but it's also a pointed and colourful two-finger salute to a world that stood back whilst so many of us died. And we'll never go quietly, never again.
This is a fucking new one

inspired by @cowardsexual 's post of a very sleepy phm science team and Grace's teacher instincts
Policing the use of sanist language has got to be the most useless and counterproductive way to be anti-psych.
Tbh, I'm significantly less concerned with people casually using the word crazy to mean busy or overwhelming or something than I am with people adopting clinical psychiatric language in an attempt to appropriate the pathologizing function of psychiatry for themselves (as in the case of people using "narcissist" to essentially mean "evil person" and diagnosing everyone in their life as a narcissist).
Everybody is anti-DSM until they want to diagnose someone they dislike with ontologically evil disorder (aka rancid bitch disease).
whenever i look into a historical monarch who doesn’t get talked about much and is just kind of a blank spot in my understanding of the historical narrative, 95% of the time what i find is pure white hot blistering capability. a pencil pusher for the ages. a 39 year reign with no more than three hours of sleep a night. there aren’t any good stories from his reign because he systematically caught and stopped all catastrophic good stories before they could start. you shrimply must respect it
Peeling off the broken breastplate of a stoic knight who only fights and never speaks, just to realize there’s nothing in there. Not metaphorically—the armor is literally empty. It doesn’t appear to affect him. If the armor stays mostly in the shape of a knight, he just gets back up to keep fighting. But with the chest plate off he just sits there, equally impervious to curiosity as I reach up into the cavity where his body might’ve gone. Stubbornly, no answers are found anywhere in there.
So I forge him a new breastplate and on the inside, because I know he has plenty of room, I put a little pocket. Not big enough to hold anything functional of course. Just a little extra piece to see what he’ll do with it.
TIL that paddle spindles are a thing that exists thanks to tiktok
I can't draft like this but I took up paddle spinning recently! And the only money I put into it was for wool...
Because I already had Tinker Toys laying around. I just finished plying four singles I made with it, plying was done on the spinner too.

I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal sense— it is behavior that causes social harm.
I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.
I'm serious when I say we gotta give Temmie Chang half the credit for Making Undertale (and Deltarune)
She's got an animation degree, I know the art in Undertale gets underappreciated sometimes because it's trying to evoke an older simpler style, but the art in Undertale is legit amazing and without Temmie, none of Toby's ideas would have been able to be realized (without finding some other artist and animator)
She deserves more flowers for being the one who made the vast majority of the art assets for an entire game that is one of the most commonly cited games as an influence on others (her style is so beloved and recognizeable, there's a fully complete Undertale fangame emulating it)
