the way dick and barbara as a dynamic was so seriously fumbled does genuinely fascinate me like here is this girl who’s grown up in gotham her entire life and has presumably had intimate exposure to the corruption plaguing its various social services and who somehow manages to become friends with the vigilante trying to work outside of that system although not necessarily to the extent of consistent success and then here is this boy who by way of fate witnesses his parents fall to their death in gotham and as such is taken in by the vigilante and grows up to idolize him but eventually desires to leave the bounds of gotham because he wants to be something more and independent all the while the girl stays and engrosses herself even more in pulling the city up by its bootstraps and in the process is paralyzed by a man who also blows up her friend both of which put her on the path to becoming someone who is arguably the vigilante’s closest confidante and the one person privy to what he’s going through emotionally while she’s also on the road to becoming the eyes and ears of gotham’s vigilante network. and somehow. somehow you want me to believe that when dick walks back into gotham after his failure of a marriage and the purpose of his life and ideology at such a perilous crossroads he’s not absolutely intimidated by the fact that barbara has secured a place at bruce’s side and as a part of gotham’s intricate fabric that he craved for ten years give or take and if not for the grief bruce so carefully masks behind his eyes it would almost be like dick was never there. like omg he should have taken one look at what bruce and barbara had and started spiraling

dick as a personification of wayne manor and barbara as a personification of gotham.. two steadfast hallmarks in bruce’s life and yet one temporal and the other permanent and this giving way to various privacies and jealousies. they should have been fighting over bruce for sport
