Having multiple soulmates isn't unheard of. The world is vast enough that having more than one is actually a comfort. Statisticallyāhe'd roughly done the mathāmore than half of those who develop soulmarks will never meet their fated bond due to this. It stands to reason then that the chance of getting to meet one's fated bond is a lot less slim the more bonds one has.
It isn't this that surprises him. Having multiple soulmates isn't unheard of, but most who are lucky enough to have more than one only have two or if they're incredibly lucky, three.
Army has four.

"Saw Rider at the Reef the other day," Aloha greets him without greeting him, leaning against the arcade cabinet that Mask is currently trying to beat his own high-score on. It's a racing gameāhe's not particularly any good at racing games, but he's better than all the other schmucks who come in and put their grubby loser hands all over the controllers here, and it's his name on the leaderboard, all the way down.
Mask grunts a response, shifting the wheel controller as hard as he can to the right. He knows from experience that if he doesn't give Aloha some kind of response, the pink inkling will pout about it and get increasingly annoying until Mask relents.
Thankfully, it's enough. Aloha shifts how he's leaning against the cabinet, draping himself against it dramatically instead. "He's so attractive, Mask, have you seen him? I feel crazy."
"What are you talking about," Mask mutters, the question rhetorical and flat. He soars across the finish line and scowls at the score he getsānot enough to beat his own score from however long ago he set it.
"C'mon, you've heard of Rider," Aloha assures him with one of those flirty, playful smiles he likes to wear. In the dim lights of the arcade, Aloha's freckles and tentacle spots give off a soft lightāhe's a firefly squid and he loves to flaunt it so much that it'd be difficult to find someone who doesn't know that about him. Mask thinks so, at least. "He's the guy tearing up the leagues right now. Got no proper team. Gold dynamo?"
The name of the heavy roller makes Mask's face twist up as though he's eaten something sour. His expression is covered by his gas mask, but Aloha's good at reading himāmuch to his continued displeasureāand lets out a bright laugh.
"Yeah, I've heard of him," Mask mutters darkly, giving the racing game a parting glare before he pushes himself up out of the seat. He's not in the mood for it anymore, and if Aloha's going to be bothering him, he should probably find something else to do. "He'll be oooold news by next week. Everything always is."
Aloha trails after him like a lost duckling. "Oh my cod, Mask," he sighs, lifting both hands and dragging them down his freckled face in exasperation. "Please don't tell me you're still just getting your news from Chumblr, Rider's been trending on Squidder for weeks."
"Don't caaare." Mask rolls his eyes even though Aloha can't see it at this angle, picking a direction and walking away. He wants nothing more than to go back and kick the shit out of the racing cabinet, but that'll do literally nothing productive. He'd probably bruise his foot if he did, not to mention look like a total immature little baby in front of Aloha.
Not that he cares what Aloha thinks of him. It's just embarrassing either way.
"Ugh, whatever. I've given up on trying to excavate you from that dead website." Aloha shakes his head. He trails to a stop as they pass a claw machine, then points at it and loudly demands. "Mask, get me something."
The sigh Mask lets out is a well practiced and well used one. It's the 'Aloha sigh', reserved specifically for when Aloha does some dumb whaleshit that pisses Mask off. Which is often whenever Aloha's around him.
He meanders over and puts a token into the claw machine, boredly scanning the selection of plushies and prizes. He picks something stupid and sparkly and pink and begins to direct the claw over to it. Aloha all but has his face pressed up against the side of the cabinet, watching Mask play.
"I wasn't kidding about Rider, by the way," Aloha says as Mask is shifting the claw. He's not expecting it and lets go too early, staring in dismay as the claw reaches down, knocks his target aside, and grabs nothing but thin air. Aloha doesn't seem too perturbed by his failure. "He's stupid hot. Like, he could be a model. Cod, I bet he's got amazing arms, you gotta have good arm strength to use a dynamo like that, right?"
"Upper body," Mask corrects with a mutter, crouching to slot another token into the claw machine. "Back and chest. Rollers are heavy."
Aloha's staring at him. Mask takes a moment to think about it, then shrugs, standing up straight and grabbing the joystick for the claw again.
"I gueeess you need arm strength too if you're swinging your roller around like a pleb."
Aloha shivers and Mask pretends not to notice, going for the stupid pink sparkly plush he'd been aiming for before. Aloha likes gaudy things like that, and he'll get bonus points for getting something Aloha can hug and squish. He shifts the claw backwards exactly where he needs it, taking a deep breath before sliding it to the right and watching with narrowed eyes.
"You think he could pick me up?" Aloha murmurs. There's something beneath his tone that makes Mask want to shudder too. Unfortunately for him, Aloha keeps thinking out loudāthe velvet soft hum of his voice reaches into Mask's chest and lights a fire in his core. "He could pin me to something⦠or throw me over his shoulder⦠He has such nice shoulders, they're so broad, Mask."
The claw descends and successfully grips its target, and Mask lets out a sigh of relief. It's already embarrassing enough that he missed it the first time. He doesn't know what he'd do with himself if he missed with the claw again.
"Could you stop being hooorny for two seconds?" Mask snarks, watching the claw bring the pink plush home. It's a jellyfish with rhinestones embedded its bell, and the long tentacles that extend from it are made of both sheer and soft fabric. "Get your shitty prize, I have other games to play."
best part of writing this fic is coming up with sea related puns for every social media platform i can think of. finally had a breakthrough on renaming tiktok (crucial and essential because aloha would absolutely use it)
I think a lot of people misunderstand why enemies to lovers is so popular. Itās quickly become one of the most pervasive tropes in many novels. Is it the banter, the tension? Thatās definitely part of it. But if that were true, then friends-to-lovers and literally any romance with good dialogue and characterization would scratch the same itch. For some, it does, but for manyā¦enemies-to-lovers just hits different.Ā
My theory is that it isnāt actually about love, not really. I think it fulfils a fantasy that no other trope can provide: the fantasy of being seen as an equal.Ā
Think about what specifically makes someone an enemy in fiction. Itās not just someone the MC dislikes, itās someone who can affect them in tangible ways, maybe even have the power to ruin them, challenge their worldview, expose their weaknesses, etc. The relationship begins with conflict because the characters are fundamentally opposed in some way. It doesnāt matter why, but theyāre fighting. There is a struggle for dominance.Ā
I would argue that the most impactful enemies-to-lovers moments are never the romantic moments, theyāre the scenes where power shifts. They BOTH lose: theyāre forced into a position that would have horrified them at the beginning of the story. They end up needing (or wanting) each other.Ā
Thatās why I think people are often disappointed when a supposed enemies-to-lovers story turns out to be a milquetoast attempt where theyāre just kinda mean to each other for a few pages, and then immediately start making out. Whereās the risk, the actual threat? If the characters arenāt capable of genuinely affecting one another, then the relationship isnāt actually transforming in a satisfying way. The appeal is in the fact that they have power over each other, because the eventual trust they build requires real surrender.
Because hereās the thing about enemies; they pay attention, and usually more attention than anyone else. They notice weaknesses because theyāre actively looking for them, they notice strengths because they need to account for them. They notice habits, blind spots, ambitions, fears.Ā
They study the MC with a level of scrutiny that borders (and later crosses) intimate, but unlike friends (or supporting characters in the MCās corner) theyāre not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, they donāt overlook flaws out of affection. Which is exactly what makes the eventual romance so satisfying. It feels earned.Ā
Itās easy to imagine being loved by someone who sees the best version of you, but itās an entirely different thing to be loved by someone who has seen you at your worst. Thatās why this dynamic often feels more convincing than romances where the characters are immediately into each other.
I imagine there are many who go through life feeling misunderstood, or worse, that the people who love them only love the polished, perfect version they present to the world, almost like impostor syndrome. But what if there was someone who couldnāt be fooled by this carefully constructed image?Ā
When someone more powerful chooses someone, maybe the fantasy is protection. When itās someone less powerful, the fantasy might be admiration. But if thereās someone intelligent and observant enough to see the MC as an equal, the fantasy there is the most intense and honest validation.Ā
Which means enemies to lovers was never about turning hate/annoyance into love, it was about turning power into vulnerability ā which is a terrifying loss of power, which THEN leads to intimacy.Ā
Yeah, I agree OP. It's about power and vulnerability!
Enemies to lovers at it's best is a wonderfully versatile kind of romance, because in the good ones you get things like:
How do you navigate opposing world views? Who challenges your ideals and values to make you a better person? How do you compromise? Because, in a good enemies-to-lovers, it can't actually be that the antagonist was never right about anything or that the protagonist was perfect, or there wouldn't be that mutual respect/attraction. They affect each other. They change each other.
Sacrifice - it's easy to love your friends, it can be easy to love when it doesn't cost you anything, but loving an enemy? What would you actually give up for love? What wouldn't you? When is love enough and when isn't it?
Redemption - not in the 'sad backstory' way, but in the way that you can be forgiven and loved despite the most monstrous or shameful things you have ever done
All of these themes tie into vulnerability, our sense of self, and our power over ourselves and others.
In a good enemies-to-lovers story I don't think it can ever feel like they are just together because it's a romance story. You have to earn it.
Enemies-to-lovers interrogates what it means to love, and how we define love, in a way that I don't think other genres do as much. But I'm also hopelessly biased so!
A new option for anyone with a veeeeery long doc or complicated outline (and no desire to look at all of it at once) -
Collapsible headers!Ā
Turn them on inĀ your Editor settings (Toggle headings), then click / tap the arrow beside any H1āH4 header to tuck that section away, safe and sound.
When you create a new header, just hitĀ Enter, and itāll become collapsible too.
Collapsible headers work in both the editor and on Reader links, so you can use them while writing, outlining, and editing; or to help your readers stay focused on one section at a time. We particularly love them for temporarily pretending the previous 86,491 words in a doc donāt exist (at least, not until the editing phase). šāāļø

we don't credit rebecca sugar enough for making the episode with the first gay wedding in a kids show extremely plot relevant so it could not be skipped or cut.
#rebecca sugar has gone on record saying that they knew from the beginning they wanted ruby and sapphire and they put every inch of planning#in to make sure that the studio could not take them out. sugar has said theyād compromised on hundreds of things theyād wanted for steven#so that they had the bargaining power specifically to keep ruby and sapphireās relationship#and a number of āfillerā episodes were created just to establish counter-arguments that might come up when they pitched the wedding episode#the one that comes to mind is the episode about steven and connie getting lost in roseās room stevenās central conflict about liking their#fave book seriesā romantic ending was later weaponised when producerās were like āoh but stevenās a boy he wonāt be too interested in them#getting marriedā sugar was able to be like āno. in this episode itās established he loves romance and specifically weddings. and in these#episodes itās shown how much steven cares about ruby and sapphire and their relationship and happiness. you cannot convince me this is not#good and necessary plot development#and they wrapped it up in the season finale and the big climactic point of the diamonds finally coming to attack earth to make the#episode integral to the series no skipping it without confusion. and had ruby wear a wedding dress because international censors took#advantage of her design to give her a masculine va#and sugar made certain that everybody knew This was a queer love story that an entire town supported and admired and that any child watchin#it at home would know they are not alone and that that support is waiting for them out there somewhere#sugar sacrificed the wider story they wanted to tell for that and it was a horrible decision to be given but they made the right choice
