“Imagine a woman in the long skirts and high collar of the early 20th century standing in front of the painting she created. It is a massive piece—about 10 feet tall by 8 feet wide—and it is not a landscape, a portrait, a still life, nor a scene from myth or history. Dominating the composition is a bold yellow form reminiscent of a plant or sea creature, glowing amid colorful, biomorphic shapes and vigorous lines. This is just one of 10 such works that she has created almost entirely alone—sometimes walking on her work as she lays down the paint—and one of 193 radically abstract paintings that she has made in a few short years, between 1906 and 1915. None of these details fit with the story told in museums and art history courses. We know the first abstract painters so well that we often refer to them by last names alone: Kandinsky, Malevich, Mondrian. We know who is celebrated for doing “action painting” on giant canvases laid on the floor—Pollock. Each of these men has been lauded for opening a way into new territory. As it turns out, that territory had already been explored by another artist. Her name was Hilma af Klint.”

The Bechdel Test
Alison Bechdel’s original 1985 Dykes To Watch Out For strip that became known as “The Bechdel Test.”
never forget that this was originally meant to demonstrate that lesbian representation was so rare that you wouldn’t even see two named women interact in a platonic manner let alone in a sexual or romantic one onscreen.
I never really understood why this was lesbian specific until I realized how alienating it is to look for yourself on the screen and find not a single woman whose motivations and romantic interest and friendship and sacrifice aren’t focused entirely on men – esp if you’ve fought with heavy losses to decentralize men from your own life and focus on your more healthy non-coerced love of women.
Like, the bar isn’t “has a remotely shippable relationship with a woman”, it’s actually “has literally anything at ALL in her life that isn’t about men so I can relate to her dear God please.”
yes, thank you. I wish more folks understood this.
this comic is about the horrible isolation and alienation lesbians feel in a culture where, in the majority of movies, women barely ever even talk to each other about something other than men, let alone have platonic intimacy with each other, let alone have romantic intimacy with each other, let alone love each other, let alone express love for each other, let alone have lives focused on each other.
there are so few women who reflect us, and it’s genuinely a very lonely feeling.

If you eat a raw dead rat in 2019 you deserve the bubonic plague
we’ve all thought about eating a pigeon but it doesn’t mean you just pick one off the street and bite into it
this post is… not great.
the people who died were an ethnic Kazakh couple in a small Mongolian town. they didn’t eat a dead rat, they ate raw organs from a marmot they had hunted.
the plague is an endemic disease in Mongolia, spread largely through contact with marmots (largely as a result of their fleas). unfortunately, due to a lack of information, some people in Mongolia subscribe to the folk belief that eating raw marmot will lead to good health.
this couple contracted the disease–which is very treatable with antibiotics–but did not receive adequate care in time and, as a result, suffered horrifically before dying. they left behind four children, ranging in age from 14-years-old to 9 months. they did not deserve to die.
also @ ppl saying this is another “eradicated disease” making a comeback
plague was never eradicated
its extremely rare in most countries now, particularly “western” countries, but there are several places where it is still endemic. madagascar in particular still has regular outbreaks of plague, including a rather severe one in 2017 with over 2000 cases (fortunately the fatality rate was less than 10%, indicating most people were able to get treatment)
it would be very difficult to ever actually eradicate plague since it has animal hosts as well as human, plus many of the countries where outbreaks still occur are quite poor and have very rural populations, so despite plague being fairly treatable by antibiotics, this treatment is often not accessible for many people in plague-affected regions. also there is likely to be a problem with antibiotic resistance soon (at least one resistant strain has already been found), so outbreaks in these countries may become worse in the future
