Iâve personally been accused on several accounts of having wolfdogs. Iâve had people come up to us saying they love GOT and now want a husky like the direwolves. I am not exaggerating when I say there is a rise in surrendered/abandoned huskies and âwolf like breedsâ. It takes a special type of person to be able to keep up with the husky needs such as a complete balanced diet, high activity, firm obedience, coat upkeep, the list could go on⌠Having a true wolfdog takes an incredible type of person to care properly and should not be taken for granted. My pack an I wants to get the following message out to public.
â PSA: #HuskiesNotWolves â The popularity of Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, GSD, and a few other breeds have sky rocketed in interest because of the uprising show Game of Thrones. GOT features hi def images of Direwolves that people often mistake the resemblances to the breeds mentioned above; causing an impulse in breed sales with no knowledge of that breed. These domesticated dogs are merely that. Dogs. â Because of misinformation being passed around, these animals are ending up in shelters all over the world and being dumped because their specific needs for their breed are not being met. Shelters cannot keep up with the high demand of returned dogs and most of them end up being killed, there, if not, by people who think they are actually wolves. Buying dogs impulsively based solely on looks is not only unethical but irresponsible. â Misrepresentation kills. These wonderful dog breeds are suffering because the general public is so uneducated on the matter. â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸ Please stand with us; Share this caption with a photo of your beloved pet(s) that often get mistaken for something theyâre not. Use the hashtag #HuskiesNotWolves on IG and letâs make a difference. IG: @kylo_in_ohio
Post bath sun bathing.
This âwolfâ was shot a few days ago after being discovered in a barn near Wingham, Ontario. The farmer assumed the animal was going to kill his livestock, though further reports that it did no actual damage to his flock.  In reality, this âwolfâ appears to be a lost husky, who was probably seeking shelter and warmth inside the farmerâs barn. Huskies and other northern-breed dogs are often mistaken for wolves and shot, trapped, or poisoned thanks in part to people who misrepresent them as being âwolvesâ or âwolfdogsâ. Huskies and other northern-breed canines are starkly different in appearance when compared to real wolves, and while it is a hunterâs responsibility to know their target, there does seem to be an influx of folks telling others that their domestic-breed pups are something they are not. When a hunter sees a dog being claimed as a âwolfâ, and unwittingly believes that claim, incidents like this are only more likely to occur. Remember: Huskies are no more closely-related to wolves from a genetic standpoint than a doberman or corgi is. They are a primitive breed, however, adapted to a similar climate as wild wolves; and they therefore share some physical similarities, such as long muzzles, double-coats, pointed ears, and thick tails. But when you really start to break it down, the differences are stronger than the similarities. Below are images of a high-content wolfdog (genetically identical to a pure wolf) compared to a husky/northern breed mix (no wolf):Â
Initially, they may seem similar in coloration and build, but take a closer look: The husky has a much more uniform coat length, bears blue eyes (which are genetically impossible for wolves to have), and displays stark facial markings, thin pointed ears, a wide chest, and very upright stance. The wolf, by contrast, has a varied coat length, including pronounced cheek ruffs, a dorsal cape, and a âmaneâ around its neck and shoulders. The ears are thick and rounded at the tips, as well as fully-furred on the insides. The eyes are small and slanted, almond-shaped, and are not blue (or dark brown) in color, while the skull has a narrow, arrow-shaped build. Wolves also walk with a very low-to-the-ground posture and will not have curly tails, as some huskies and northern-breed mixes do.Â
For another comparison, hereâs a black AKC Siberian husky compared to a pure wolf:
Again: Misrepresenting dogs as âwolvesâ or âwolfdogsâ does far more harm than good. Itâs not something to be taken lightly, and really does cause real-world damage in innumerable animalsâ lives.

Just a reminder that dog-dogs are sometimes shot (and even stuffedâŚthereâs more out there than just the one I posted!) because people canât tell the difference between a dog and a wolf. Yes, it is a big deal, with real consequences.
I wanted to reblog this with @nothatisnotawolfdogâs addition. I had yet to see an actual taxidermied dog but it really makes the message about misrepresentation hit home.
That black wolf canât be a âpureâ wolf, black is a color introduced to the wolf population by dogs.
Otherwise good post, though Iâm surprised to learn that people have trouble telling a wolf and certain dog breeds apart. The differences in head shape and proportions alone is a dead give away to me. Dogs generally have a much more pronounced stop, and a broader flatter more âpuppy likeâ head.
Black coloration in wolves is produced through a genetic variation of the K locus and is not, in fact, confirmed to have come from domestic dogs. It is highly suspected that it does, but even if that were the case, the dog genes are so incredibly far back in the lines (literally thousands and thousands of years or more) that wolves which carry the K locus responsible for black pigmentation are nevertheless pure wolf. Please do not assume that because a wolf is black that it must be part dog, or that it isnât pure.Â
Keep my dogs safe you guys. Huskies and their mixes are NOT wolves.

I'm a people too!
Apparently dogs are supposed to get âproper foodâ not meat And they turn into savage animals that will kill anything with blood once the get the taste of meat⌠đđ
I had a coworker at a doggy daycare who said raw feeding makes dogs aggressive. He said a lot of dumb things though.
Iâve had someone worried that my dog was going to eat me if I got a cut on my finger lol
My great aunt kept telling me if i fed Rakki any raw meat he would start to attack people / see people as prey(?!?!) She also believes women canât train GSDs because apparently GSDs are dominant alphawolf dogsŠ who need Manly Man⢠to train them or they will turn into wild beasts who feast on children and souls of the innocent (???!?!???!??!).
@eightbigpaws I was wondering why Kiloâs been feasting on all the children lately đ just thought it was all that raw meat heâs been getting
Don't feed them past midnight you guys!!
