Hi. Love your tbol animations and your style! Do you have any AUs or headcanons abt Joaquin,Manolo and Maria that you didn’t mention on your blog?
ty for the ask! :D
i have quite a few, actually! sorry if this post is rlly long since its a bit of a ramble ngl 🙏
1. untitled aroace maria AU (ft. joanolo bc yes)
tbh this started out as a headcanon as i was watching the movie the first time around (i mean, "I belong to no one"? if that doesnt scream aroace i dont know what does XD) but obviously the story didn't go that way. i love canon maria and im a sucker for tres leches/musical hearts, still, but it got me thinking of an AU where maria IS aroace and how that'd change the story
she comes back from spain and the first half of the movie is relatively the same. both joaquin and manolo try to win her over, but ofc, in this AU she has no intention of saying yes to either of them. yeah, she loves them dearly as friends, but romantic relationships are a whole different thing and she just has never been interested in that. can't even imagine being married to anyone (would rather not, really) and especially not her 2 best friends. she wants to remain friends, as it always was between the 3 of them. there isn't a need for "something more" between them, just their friendship is enough. (so yeah, neither la muerte nor xibalba wouldve won the bet lmao)
the story kinda diverges where manolo asks maria to meet him at the bridge at dawn. maria decides to go, but she's also going with the intent to tell him she has no plans on marrying him or joaquin. he sings to her and confesses, and she tells him no, and is about to explain why when xibalba's snake appears (bc ofc, the gods and especially xibalba didn't account for her choosing neither of them).
and then stuff similar to canon plays out again. maria protects manolo and gets bitten by the snake, and joaquin and general posada confront manolo at the bridge. manolo, thinking that his childhood best friend and love is dead and that his other best friend wants him dead, chooses to accept xibalba's offer and goes to the land of the remembered.
short detour to talk about joaquin's POV!
joaquin finds manolo at the tree (very much not canon-compliant, i know.) and what he wished for comes true because maria wakes up. but then he realizes something? maria's here now and of course he's relieved that his best friend is back, but that's kind of it. she was away for 10 years and he missed her, but having been away for so long, he's realized that he's never really gotten the opportunity to grow to love her. as a best friend, sure. that's always been there. but romantically? not quite.
the person who did grow up with him in the same town? the person who he was able to sneak away from training with, who could relate to having to constantly stand under his parent's legacy, who was always there waiting when he returned from his travels and supporting him even if their paths diverged? the person who's so stupidly genuine and passionate that he wouldn't give up being a musician even if the ENTIRE TOWN is telling him otherwise? well, he's six feet under and joaquin will never be able to hear that voice sing again because in the end it was him who told manolo that "yes, it should have" been him who died at the tree, right? and now it's too late to even tell manolo that he loves him.
when general posada immediately suggests the marriage between him and maria after she wakes up and finds out about manolo's death, she shuts down the idea and she's a little surprised when joaquin not only supports her, but outright declares that he's against marrying her. even more so, when despite that fact, he lets her know that he's choosing to stay in san angel.
anyway, this is my main AU that i just kinda build in the back of my head. if u have any name ideas for this au, please be my guest and let me know lol
havent quite finished the ending, but this is how it is so far :>
2. manolo has (a lot of) issues
TW for mild discussion of mental health issues & depression
you can probably guess from my animatics & drawings but i dont think manolo's family trauma & problems pre-first-death ever go away post-revival? the ending scene of the movie makes it seem like all is well (fair enough, it's a kids movie) but like, his whole life his family didn't want him to pursue his own passions and wanted him to stay away from people who DID support them (mariachi brothers), the town basically humiliated him for not killing the bull in the bullfight, his family disowned him, and his best friend told him he should've died instead of maria.
now he's back from the dead, he's able to be with the 2 people he loves the most in his life. he should be happy, but he's not. bc aside from joaquin and maria, he's kind of... alone now? maria would have married the much more successful/renowned and (presumably) wealthier joaquin (because of course she would, that's what maria deserves) if he hadn't returned. and he's always wanted to be free to pursue his own dreams, but now his father and grandmother are gone. was that really the price to be paid for that to happen? does he really deserve to be here in their place? with nothing to say for the legacy that his family spent generations building? when maria deserves so much better than what he can give?
and so on bad days, he kind of wishes that he were back in the land of the remembered. it wasn't that bad, right?
(and then ofc maria and joaquin both snap him out of it bc hell he's worth a lot more than just his family's legacy. and one day he'll be able to reunite with them but that day is not today because they might be gone but maria and joaquin are still here and manolo still means so much to them and he deserves to LIVE and keep living. and they'll keep repeating it until he believes it :) )
if you read this far, tysm for listening to my angst dump lmao
hopefully ill be able to make some actual art/animatics for these in the future ^^
