Say heya to Nyx, famously the main character and simulataniously Moxie's bio sister (what a win)

I think it's normal to get some soert of psycholigical attachment to how your character should look over a longer period of time but damn she just has it on a different level for me. Originally made in 2016 this is the latest redesign i have for her and i'd say it captures her real well

I thought about the hair a bit. At one point i used to give most of my ocs long ahir automatically but that has shifted over the eyars and now long hair is a contious effort i need to put forth. That's what made chopping hers off of the table for a long time for me, that and the relevance when she chops it off herself in the story now that she's being 'serious'

Way back when i used to be a part of this semi-closed species called northlings, well that may be an overstatement i just made some characters. It was one of those pretty mlp pony species and was rather well established back then (the adopts tended to sell for good money, so did the rights), eventually it came to the point where the owner, called Nini i think, started making other species that would be a part of the world of northlings.

And that’s where this thing comes from, no idea what they were called though. What struck me the most about this is that, to this day i genuinely like how it looks. The colour choices are nice, the anatomy and linerat looks solid, there definitely is way too many colours but whatever. Northlings actually fall into that brand of species that just has way too much going on to look pretty (that’s most species when i think about it.

I actually have a surprising amount of art of these two together (well, two, but trust me that’s surprising for me)

Their relationship has always been rather interesting to me but requires a bit of background to understand.  Moxie is born to the woman who’s the leader of a rebel movement that has base on a slightly forgotten island, over the years a whole village has grown there and it’s a somewhat of a self sustainible community. The moment Moxie is born his dad West just shows him to everyone cause he’s just so excited. That kind of start the trend of everyone knowing Moxie, leading to him being under a lot of pressure to not only preform but be sociable. Y’know when you have a school and the principle’s kid goes to said school, so all the teachers know them, and so do all the kids, that’s what i sort of imagine it being like

This really isn’t Moxie’s thing though, while he definitely is an extrovert this sort of being the one others look up to leader role has never been for him, he way more prefers leaving the decision making up to someone else and just completing what he has to. But he manages it, with his mum guiding him through it all.

Ruby, on the other hand, wanted to be Moxie. He wanted the adoration, the respect, he basically romantized Moxie’s life to the point he couldn’t see any faults in it while degrading himself in the process (I’m worse than that, I’m nothing if I don’t achieve that etc.)

The two of them were rivals/friends since childhood with Moxie leaning more towards the friend part while Ruby leaned towards the rivals part of it. Basically said Moxie just wanted someone to hang out with and put everything else aside around and Ruby saw Moxie as this unbeatable standart that he constantly tries to attain. This often showed when Moxie did something a bit more lax, something not so ‘protigy worthy’ which would lead to Ruby critisizing him rather heavily.

This whole image Ruby built of Moxie in his head changes after his mother died. Not that Moxie wasn’t vulnarable in front of him before, but this time it was so raw he could by no means ignore it. And it in a way messed with Ruby too because he just couldn’t get it through his thicc skull that yes Moxie isn’t perfect.

Their relationship got pretty strained after that, with Ruby demanding Moxie get better while he was still in a very fragile emotional state, not being able to handle the idol he built his life around crumbling like that. He even tried to rile Moxie up the only way he knew how, competition, which didn’t go well at all.

And then Ruby never saw Moxie the same after, the way he is nw he views Moxie as a different person completely. Most people do, Moxie’s change of personality wasn’t that severe but it’s just not something you’d realise unless you were close to him. Ruby, with his constant blindfolds, ofc doesn’t realise either.

They’re called tawyras, a fantasy species i made up that is very dragon like. I could talk about them all day but let’s just focus on this one little aspect for now.

As for gender roles in clothing, tldr: they don’t have them, they actually don’t have any gender roles in the first place.

I’ve personally gave a lot of thought to the topic in real life too, things like how clothes are percieved and assigned gender based on nothing but ‘brain washing’. A skirt isn’t female, a tie isn’t male etc., these are all just things that society made us believe.

Naturally my way of viewing the problem seeps into the way these things would affect a fantasy culture. I personally find no enjoyment in a woman succeding in a society by overcoming some sort of arbitrary difficulties that come with her womanhood, to me it feels rather bland and i rarely get interested in such storylines.

It would only make sense that I’d completely avoid this trope any chance I get, and the tawyras are the epitome of that. Nothing is gendered, they have the concepts of feminine and masculine but as ways of expressing oneself rather than based on what sort of category you were born into. Neither is viewed as lesser or superior in any aspect, they are equal. 

This also means that assuming gender upon first sight, as is common in our society, is never done, and is considered very rude. Every tawyra goes by they/them pronouns automatically, and it is up to personal decision of one wants to disclose any other ones. In their language, called tawra (that I have not even started making yes), the choice of pronouns is way higher than in english. I got inspired by how japannesse pronouns work (esp ‘I’ and what the version they use can say about a character)

All in all in their society gender does not matter unless it comes to procreation, which is just about the only biological part where it does matter. Other than that they are fantasy part dragon species so there are no strength differeces between males and females that would be significant

And of course that would mean that wearing a dress would not be seen as an issue at all for any of them, societally at least. On a personal level some might have some trouble with it.

Which brings me to talking about how the ocs pictures would feel about having to wear what they’re wearing in the first place(ltr): Velyr would be furious, but only because that’s the way he always is. He may not wear dresses often but that’s moreso based on his lack of interest in self care and just wearing the same clothes over and over again. He’s nothing against the piece of clothing other than he’s not normally seen wearing it. I actually imagine that if Velyr were to ever go on some prestigous party/ball he’s most likely choose a dress, with his ‘dreamie’ being one of those sorta mid lenght narrow black sparkly ones (gotta draw him in it one day) Moxie’s main outfit is a dress, he wears dresses most of the time anyway and he’s happily wear this around everyday. He’s that sort of person who’s capable of immediatly forgetting what he’s wearing and just vibing, so he could be wearing the most ridiculous shit and be completely fine

While Mal would not be one to wear a dress every day he’s definitely put it on for the occasion, and bro he’d slay. No one would be able to hear the end of how good Mal thinks he looks in the dress, not because he’s completely self centred (well maybe a little) but also because he’d really feel pretty in it.  Vinny is once again someone who can put on anything and be confident, but to the extreme to where he could just be naked and walk out anyway. Naturally a dress would be no challenge for this phlegmatic.  Aki is one to wear dresses quite often, but more of that long cottage core vibe yknow. The one he’s wearing in the picture would most definitely be far from his comfort zone. And since he’s someone who constantly thinks about how he’s percieved he would not have the best time if he were to wear it.

Ezief has definitely worn dresses before, as a part of the aristocracy they basically have to be in his selection of clothes. Though unlike Moxie or Vinny he has standarts, and would only wear ones that make him look professional. Naturally the one I drew him in doesn’t do that, but Ezi is always one to react to the situation as best as he can.

I’ve been on the fence on how to make ref sheets for the longest time, like there are definitely too may options to choose from.

Normally I just do the standart one pose that kinda fits the characters from front but when making something a bit more detailed it can get a bit tricky + if i position the arms in a weird way you can’t really see everything. SO for now I’m going with this sorta boring lowkey tposing option + i also showed that one actually posed one in the corner because it looked so damn boring lmao Anyway Moxie yay, made him in early 2020 and just instantly fell in love. ever since then he’s turned from proper poor burned out kid to a bit of an incel i wanna say. Basically a lot of traits that I originally viewed as ‘tragic’ and sort of romantised them are now more faults then anything. 

Stuff like completely wallowing in self pity, always seeking emotional support despite never making an attempt at getting better, knowing he is that way yet refusing to do anything about it, not putting any effort towards anything and often accidentally holding his own mental wellbeing on other people (like lowkey suicide baiting). In the end he’s just kind of lost I do still feel bad for him though he’s my toxic little baby.

Just so I don’t completely shit on him Moxie is also nice, can talk with basically anyone, very good at reading the room and calming down situations, and always looks out for everyone. If anyone’s talking to that one person satnding alone in the corner it’s him, everyone’s his homie. He just sort of, stopped caring and made being the class clown his personality after his mum died, which absolutely has to do with how much pressure was put on him for being the son of the leader. Ever since his birth everyone’s known him so that made his mental state after Kelza (his mum) died widely disscused by basically everyone, some people naturally saying horrid shit. This caused his legendary mental breakdown which is arguably going on to this day. wa yea fun stuff!! Moxie kins the entirety of the Tomorrow is nearly yesterday album by Crywank
