Controversial Falsettos Take

The line “chess ain’t how your boyfriend thinks” is terrible.

This is the only time that the word boyfriend is used instead of friend or lover. Both of these words are used very intentionally, friend is primarily used by Marvin to deny his own nature and the nature of his relationship (although the meaning changes by the end of the show). Lover implies a mainly sexual relationship in the first act, but takes on a new meaning in the second act when they are able to admit that they are in love with each other. Boyfriend has a different connotation, a more rigidly defined and formal romantic relationship, it would need to be used very intentionally in the show, but here it is used carelessly.

Whizzer is the one who uses the word boyfriend, which doesn’t make sense because in the first act, he struggles with commitment and being in a serious relationship for the first time, it makes no sense for him to be the one to define the relationship in this way.

The chess game is absolutely the wrong time to drop this new definition of their relationship, it wouldn’t really make sense anywhere in the first act, but especially not right before they break up.

If they are going to use the word boyfriend in the show, it seems like it should be a big deal for the characters and for the audience. It’s not a word that someone used casually the first time that they say it. That word needs to have meaning.

I know people love this line but it genuinely changes the show, and they should have put more thought into the lines they rewrote for the proshot in a show where every single word is so important.
