There are billions of people in this world. Entire cities breathing at the same time, strangers passing each other every second without ever truly seeing one another. And yet somehow, once in a lifetime if you’re lucky, you meet someone who feels painfully familiar. Someone who reaches parts of you that nobody else ever touched.
That’s what makes soulmates so terrifying and so rare. It’s not just love. It’s recognition. It’s the feeling of “there you are” after spending your whole life not realizing you were searching for someone at all.
Most people will never experience that kind of connection. The kind that alters your chemistry. The kind that makes the world split into a before and after. The kind that turns coincidence into destiny.
And maybe that’s why Hudson and Connor feel so special to me. Because against every impossible odd, in an industry designed to swallow people whole, they found each other. Two people who somehow seem to soften and unravel in the other’s presence. Like they were always meant to collide eventually, no matter how long it took.
There’s something almost haunting about witnessing two souls recognize each other in real time. The quiet gravity of it. The tenderness. The inevitability.
To find your person in this lifetime is already a miracle. To be loved by them in return? maybe that’s the closest thing to fate we’ll ever know.

Shane pushing Ilya against the wall.
Heated Rivalry (2025-)
I stumbled upon this in my rewatch : the last number we see on Shane's monitor is number 81... Ilya's number. I am unwell.
He got calmer when Ilya was holding his hand (at the beginning of the scene the number was 103) and it went back up as soon as Ilya let go. Poor baby having separation anxiety 😭💔
ISTG the more I watch the more Easter eggs I find. I might never recover from this.

The Long Game — Chapter Nineteen | insp.
Have to reblog because this is so precious 🥹
The "I'm coming to the cottage" made me think of the ending of one of my favourite rom-coms ever, When Harry Met Sally. Thirty-six years apart and yet the intention and resounding meaning is the same. Ilya might've said "I'm coming to the cottage" but to me, it sounded exactly like Harry's iconic line. I will leave to appreciate it.
When Harry Met Sally, 1989
Having Ilya punch a rapist in tlg bores me because it is exactly the kind of performative writing decision I’m used to writers doing for the sole purpose of showcasing what a good man their male character is. Making your male character punch a rapist makes him a hero. Punching a rapist symbolizes being an ally to women and respecting consent, but it doesn’t actually tell us anything about how he views women or consent. It is how a lot of real life men approach being “allies” to women and respecting consent - it is about looking like they respect women and consent, more than actually respecting women and consent. The fact that in the show Ilya’s best friend is a woman and that he lends authority to her expertise on hockey says so much more to me about how he views women than punching a rapist because he has nothing to gain from that. It does nothing to make him look like a hero. And Ilya saying “No - is okay,” to reassure Shane that it’s okay if he’s not ready for anal, and then readily postponing plans to have penetrative sex despite clearly really wanting it right then, and then asking “Still okay?” multiple times throughout their first time having penetrative sex also tells me so much more about this character’s view of consent than punching a rapist does, because it doesn’t symbolize respecting consent, it is respecting consent.
My favorite Ally moment from Ilya:
1. When he tells Scott Hunter that what he did is good after MLH and celebrating with him in a club much to Scott's astonishment
2. Bringing Troy Barrett to the Kingfisher in New York
3. Telling Troy is doing great work by raising awareness on assault and how to find help via his socials and confronting Commissioner Crowell when he learns he tries to silence Troy
4. Skipping All-Star Game to go to the funeral of Duncan Harvey (who struggled with drug addiction and mental health issues)
5. Reaching out to Ryan Price (who also came to the funeral) and asking him to become a coach for the Irina Foundation camp, saying he wants to be inclusive and keeping this his touchstone
6. Reaching out to Max (transman, former female player and now unable to compete) and ask him to be a coach as well
7. Getting everyone silent in the locker room when Troy wants to come out to the team
8. Every occasion Ilya is kind to women, like in the episode 4 scene when he apologised to the bartender on behalf of his rude teammates
9. All the times that man has hyped up women around him: Svetlana, saying she knows EVERYTHING about Hockey, Jackie Pike who could do much better than Hayden in his opinion because she runs the ship and her husband is nothing without her, Leah as a multiple Champion in the Olympics and PWHL, Yuna, his mom (I don't want you to think she was weak. She wasn't.)
That bisexual man has become my baseline in terms of what I want in a relationship ISTG
I need someone to make a fanvid of Ilya Rozanov using the ICONIC 2003 song Moy Marmeladny (My Marmalade) by Katya Le.
PLEASE
What if Ilya died? What would Shane do? How would he mourn?
They were going to die, and Ilya would never get to have the big conversation with Shane. Would never get to tell him everything that Ilya had been hiding in his heart.
Ilya only had vague ideas of the afterlife and any gods who may be waiting there, but he believed his soul would stay with Shane, however it could. He believed the people you loved stayed with you until it was your time to go.
-- Chapter 24, The Long Game
@littlechinesedoll The thing I didn't like in the book is that Shane has texts from Ilya so he knows Ilya is okay when he was reading his Instagram messages and learning about the Centaurs' emergency landing. At no point did he think that he lost Ilya for real because he had talked to Ilya via messages and knew he was ok. I would have liked for him to feel that loss, to believe he had lost him before having that reassurance because I think in terms of character development, it would have been interesting to see at that point in the book how much Shane cares about Ilya. In TLG we have most of the time Ilya's perspective. Shane's pov and thoughts are truly undeveloped in my opinion and I would have loved to see more of this. I really hope Jacob will change that bit because I want Shane to feel that sense of loss. I want to see him act that bit. I want to see Hayden devastated too because that's his best friend losing the love of his life and he can empathise with that — that man will be NOWHERE without Jackie! I want to see JJ putting two and two together at that moment. I want Shane's perspective.

i saw a few autistic creators/ppl online say that they were disappointed in shane as autistic rep because it's not stated clearly in the show, and tbqh i kinda disagree. like hudson talks about it in an interview (i will link when i find it again why is he doing so many interviews i can't keep them straight damn), and basically says what i feel that like - as great as it would be for shane to canonically go to therapy and get a diagnosis, for a man his age ('91 liner) and in his social circle, that just is not happening. like if you spend a lot of time online in autism communities maybe it seems really straightforward, but honestly up until a few years ago (and still in many many circles), if you weren't diagnosed as a kid, you never ever got a diagnosis and no one would ever say to you "hey do you think you might be autistic" they would just classify you as a bit odd (or very odd mileage may vary). i personally think it is incredibly important that everyone behind the scenes agrees that shane is an autistic character, that he is actively being written/portrayed that way, and that they defend this choice when pressed, even if no one in the canon of the show ever says "shane hollander is an autistic man," because this very well could have been another sherlock or abed or god forbid sheldon like.
i think they are doing very realistic representation and i don't think they should be punished or critiqued for prioritising realism over "ideal representation"
Rachel Reid, the Canadian author behind the Game Changer book series that inspired the show, has previously confirmed on Reddit that Shane i
To be honest this is due to Rachel Reid's writing. She did NOT write Shane with autism in her mind. She wanted him to be deeply closeted and with the heavy expectations that comes with being a gifted kid and half Asian on his shoulders.
However, as she went through the diagnosis of her oldest child, she started to see that a lot of Shane's attributes were concurrent to someone on the spectrum.
So first, Shane was not written with autism in mind; second: it's not explored at all unless he doesn't understand things other people can. I have too many examples of that tbh: with Ilya, when he cannot pick up on non verbal clubs. With his diet, the rigidity of it, the way he likes it because it's a familiar routine, the ginger ale drink being his favourite, his rigidity on certain topics (no alcohol consumption during the season although he cheats that when he meets Rose,) the list goes on. If you are familiar with autism and being on the spectrum (I've been a teacher for a decade, I had my fair share of teaching neuro-divergent kids) you'll pick up on it. If not, it's something you might miss and that was the point.
Ok. I will be that timeline person.
Ilya and Shane met at the junior international prospect cup in 2008. They were both 17.
They have sparks the night of the draft in June 2009. Nothing happens yet. They are 18.
They met again at the junior international prospect cup in 2009. They are still 18.
Ilya schemes to get Shane roped into the CMM ad campaign in the summer of 2010. They are both 19 and it's their first hookup.
So no, Ilya and Shane are not together for 9 years in July 2017 when "The Cottage" takes place. They have been on-and-off hooking up for 7 years with a big pause between the 2011 All-Stars Games in FEBRUARY (they are both 19 and about to turn 20, Shane being a month older) and the Montreal Game in FALL 2013 (they are 22 at that point) THAT'S TWO YEARS with sporadic texting and no meet ups. So no, it hasn't been 9 or 10 years of them before The Cottage like I see everywhere on socials. DO THE MATH. PLEASE.
Am I the only one curious to know if Shane gets jealous of Luca Haas? He is a sweet little munchkin, I love him and I love that Ilya is extra nice to him to make him flustered because he thinks it's funny, but I wonder what Shane would think if he knew. In TLG Shane is canon jealous of Troy and I was like "oh baby Troy is no threat" when Luca is making heart eyes at Ilya and confessing he had a poster of him above his bed when he was little. I honestly think it's genuine admiration and respect, the way I feel with some athletes, but a teeny-tiny part of me wonders if Luca has some kind of a crush on Ilya, especially after this:
Role Model, Chapter 15
Luca smiled, and it made him look even younger than his twenty years. He worshipped Ilya and everyone knew it.
I can see Luca being smitten with Ilya, having him being his first crush. It would be cute and nonthreatening. What are you guys thinking?
Every time I re-read TSOR or ¡Revolución! by @carletes 🫶
How other characters see Shane, Ilya, or Hollanov
I'm starting a new post series about how people perceive Shane Hollander or Ilya Rozanov or them jumbled together in the other books of the series.
I really like this part because Troy thinks Ilya loses his cool because he was called a homophobic slur, but as a reader you know the homophobe in question insulted Shane. Ilya doesn't fucking care what people say about him. In the scene on ep 5 when his brother called him a faggot, he didn't react. But when he called Svetlana a whore, that's when he lost it and put him into a wall. Ilya doesn't care what people say about him, but he will kill whoever speaks badly of someone he loves. I love him! Troy is wrong about his assessment but we know!
Role Model, Chapter 11, On-ice fight Troy/Ilya/Kent
He didn’t get the last word out because Ilya had laid him out on the ice. Dallas was on his back, stunned. Then he started flailing his arms, gesturing wildly toward Ilya. “Hey, ref! What the fuck! You see this fucking psychopath?”
“Shut the fuck up, Kent,” Ilya said in a low, dangerous tone.
“Why? Is Barrett your boyfriend? Did you take a break from fucking Hollander to shove your dick in Barrett’s—”
Ilya hauled Dallas up by his jersey, yanking him roughly until he was fully standing. Then Ilya shook his other glove off and punched him in the face.
“Holy shit,” Troy muttered.
The refs, who had been taking their time breaking things up between Ilya and Dallas considering this was all during a stop in play and very illegal, came rushing in. Ilya was swiftly handed a game misconduct, but he didn’t seem to mind. He winked at Troy before he left the ice.
[...] The thing that didn’t sit well with Troy was that Ilya had gotten angry when Kent had accused him of doing gay shit.

Did anyone talk about how when Ilya is in the tunnel talking on the phone to Shane we only see him back to the wall or at least we only see him and the walls of said tunnel but just before he tells Shane he's in love with him we see him look outside of the tunnel, like we actually see the end of the tunnel with the light?
Ilya is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Literally and figuratively.
I see what you did there, Jacob
That's such an interesting take! It's a better question than what they are always asked. I wish that question could be asked. The symbolism is great if it has been on purpose.
I get annoyed when people are making posts that are shocked that Shane pulled Ilya. And like maybe, /maybe/, Shane locked down Ilya (there's an argument that Ilya 'domesticity kink' Rosanov locked himself down as soon as he could get Shane to agree to it) but Shane did not pull Ilya, Ilya pulled Shane.
Canonically Shane is one of the hottest men in the world, he's rich, he is at the top of his high intensity career, and he has the biggest saddest wettest most beautiful brown eyes out of anyone on the planet. The moment Ilya saw a scrap of interest he was arranging for them to be in a commercial and jerking off in the shower at him. Ilya watched this man fold his pants one (1) time and thought "well i gotta fuck him forever now". Shane tried to say there wouldn't be a next time and Ilya was like it's too late, I've got your number, you're never getting rid of me, if I annoy you enough you will come organize my socks as like a sex thing.
In Heated Rivalry, Chapter 24 (THE COTTAGE) Shane thinks: "he could just be proud of the fact that the man was really hot. Like, Shane had definitely snagged himself a ten."
Ilya, on the other hand, tells Shane is beautiful IN THE PROLOGUE: “You are very beautiful,” Rozanov said suddenly. It was said very matter-of-factly."
Shane's answer to that is: “Hottest Man in the NHL, according to Cosmopolitan,” Shane joked."
Shane was literally ranked the most handsome player of the entire NHL CANONICALLY wtf dym some people say he's "unfuckable?" His quirks and personality are why Ilya falls for him, but the lust and desire for that man has been here since 2008 Saskatchewan. FUCK!
... It's either racism or discrimination of neuro divergent people at this point. I cannot think of another reason people would deem him unfuckable. Shane is desirable and desired, and not only by Ilya. They were lucky they found each other, they are literally perfect for each other, but by God Shane would have found someone to worship the ground he walks on if Ilya hadn't been in the picture.
