“I think my feelings about it are sort of gendered. I always tried to think about what can I do as the frontperson of a band, not what you should do. I thought ‘What can I bring to this?’ and as I’ve got older, as I think probably a lot of women do, I’ve become more and more weary with what it’s like being a woman in public space. I thought, well, wouldn’t it be interesting to kind of do nothing, not give people everything all the time and, if anything, hold back. At least my experience of being a feminine person is either having to give a lot or having to put up with a lot, and it can be both at the same time. I thought, this is my space as a frontperson, what is it? It’s a stage for you to perform something on, and I think what I wanted to perform was not a lot. Have a rest.”
