Coming back to 2012
There are only a few chapters left for me to finish the book and I have a recurring thought about this universe:
The victors of the Hunger Games do not win by coincidence. This book more than ever reinforces that the winner is chosen before the games begin, and it is not by luck, victory is a PUNISHMENT! dying in the arena is too easy, keeping one alive to be permanently punished for watching the other children in your district die without you being able to save them is as cruel as simply being killed. The phrase "may the odds be ALWAYS in your favor" is nothing more than another false propaganda from the Capitol
More than that it is part of the opression by making the victor rich - as if the capitol made them a part of them after - literally - paying tribute to the dark days. It's like "ah, now you survived the test we gave you which was inspired by all of that bad stuff YOUR PEOPLE DID but we are smarter and better than you and your people so we WON against them, and this is your all time reminder, but we TESTED you, because if you are strong enough to win a game with 23 orher people who are dead by the end of it AND all of our bonus killer stuff like mutations and hurricanes and shit, you are a threat and you might hate us which makes you dangerous for us so even if this served as a punsishment we need to keep you in check even more now."
They even SEE all these failed revolution attempts as part of the games, no?
Because it's enevitable that it ends in revolution one day. With all the rebels and all the people even in the capitol against it, all the songs sung even though forbidden, all the bongs between the tributes AND winners, with peacekeepers buying stuff at the black market and paying covey to play music, everything hints towards the harsh structure cracking open.
It's the most fucked up mind games.
Yes the hunger games are bad - but you know what is too? The entire mental situation. Not only does trauma affect behavior, and fear, but also hunger. It literally fucks with your hormones. So it's used as manipulation in wsr for many reasons.
All of that triggers people's survival instincts which many people (their bodies specifically) are in CONSTANTLY in the districts. and that is insanely stressfull. It also makes them more open towards propaganda, because of their nervous system and everything.
And here comes the worst part: we have noticed all of the characters in the books starting to justify their behavior as soon as they killed someone. That one thing they said they wouldn't do, find a way around it, even in self defense etc etc.
And THAT SPECIFIC WAY OF THINKING is natural - from a psychological perspective - the nervous system/brain is trying to protect itself.
And it will find more and more reasons over time why what happened had to happen.
So when it happens again, in the games for example, or elsewhere, a pattern starts to build.
Because that is how the brain connects similar events, forms patterns.
Now imagine a starved traumatized kid who had to kill to survive, coming out of all that, being met by the capitol's hooray.
The most important thoughts : stay alive. It's over. And: this will never happen to me again.
In that state of mind, someone who's brain isn't even fully developed yet, who most likely grew up in poverty, is suddenly put into a giant house with lots of space and food and everything.
It's the capitol saying "see? This is why you had to do this. To be safe now. And now you understand why we have to do what we do, right? The hunger games have to be there because people will always behave like that, especially those from the districts. They are dirty and poor, but you are not like that anymore. You're one of us now.not one of them. They dont understand you anymore."
"It had to happen to you. So if you do anything stupid ever again, we will put it all away because then you failed the test."
It's separation & isolation. Another form of manipulation. It's called situational design.

SPOILER:
So does that mean Lenore Dove is a Baird, and Burdock Everdeen could be Katniss' father? It's still the first chapter and I'm extremely excited
note: Lenore being raised by two men was quite inclusive, I loved it

the best trope in media is: “characters turn on the lights, see the monster, and immediately turn the lights back off”
if we at least had IA when the series was on air
