Juspion Overview and Review
I suck at doing stuff like this, but damn it I spent hours on this and I’m not about to NOT post it. I don’t go over everything and everyone in the show though but I figure it’s enough for a basic overview and review.
Special Megabeast Investigator Juspion is a tokusatsu televison program produced by Toei that aired for 46 episodes from 1985 to 1986. It is the fourth installment in the Metal Heroes series and the first not to be a direct sequel to any of the previous shows.
Instead it follows Juspion, yes that is his real name, our hero and recipient of the Galaxy’s Tightest Pants Award. He is a young man that was orphaned as a baby and raised by the prophet Ejin.
Seriously though look at these pants.
One day, Ejin reads a terrible prophecy written in the Galactic Bible that says “When the time comes that Satan Goth reawakens, the cosmos will be overrun with berserk beasts that will destroy everything.”
Must be hard to read through those eyebrows.
Obviously that’s really not cool, so Ejin sends Juspion off to fight Satan Goth and the Megabeasts in the title. He also gives him a rad metal tech suit and a cool giant robot with a cool theme song.
Juspion is joined by the lady android Anri and the baby alien mascot thing abomination Miya.
Don’t stare at me like that.
Now, who is this Satan Goth guy? Well, he’s an evil giant with the power to drive Megabeasts berserk who totally isn’t ripping off Darth Vader’s look. His goal is to establish a Megabeast Empire.
“I don’t even know what a Star Wars is, buddy.”
Aiding him is his son, Mad Gallant. His hobbies are coming up with dumb plans and then hissing “Damn you Juspion” when they fail. He’s my favorite.
“I cannot see but don’t I look cool?” form.
Now, getting into my personal opinions of the show (and less snarky comments.) I love it.
The plot rarely ever felt at a stand-still, which is sort of a rarity for me personally. That’s not to say that every episode is dedicated to it, it’s just that there’s more than one would expect from a show of this era.
As you could probably guess from me yammerin’ on about a “Galactic Bible” and “Satan Goth” there are quite a few references to Christianity. These are mostly on a superficial level, but are worth mentioning anyway.
I don’t know what a bible is either, so what the heck do I know?
Given that this is Toei and also the 80s, there are lots of real explosions. I’m easily amused by things that go boom, so I’m kept happy. A little less amused by the compositing effects but I can deal with them.
The acting in the show is decent for the most part atrocious child acting aside. Hikaru Kurosaki is good as Juspion, although the goofy acting at the beginning of the series is definitely not for everybody. Jun’ichi Haruta chews up the scenery as Mad Gallant, but I think that in this case it absolutely works. He’s easily my favorite part of this show.
The character development is uneven, with most of it going to Juspion. Anri gets some but it is done in a way that makes me wish they hadn’t bothered.
Still, I think the show is absolutely worth watching especially now that Space Squad: Gavan vs Dekaranger is out.
If Galactic Tarzan vs Literally Space Satan and Space Satan Jr. seems like your jam, check it out.
