No also means no when a little kid says, “stop tickling me” even if they’re laughing, or “no i don’t wanna hug” even if you love them, or “no i dont wanna play” even if you’re having fun. Teach little kids that consent matters and they will be way less likely to be assholes when they grow up.

and just as importantly I’d you teach kids consent as early as possible they’ll be easy more able to recognise and push back when other people are assholes to them.

I had to enforce this SO HARD when I was a substitute teacher. “They told you they don’t want you to do that. So don’t do it.” and then they’d get huffy and I would look in that 13 year old’s eyes and say “No means no.” and watch these kids who had, absolutely, had the consent talk about sex realize “oh fuck, this isn’t just about sex…its the same kind of thing.” With really only one exception did any kid I ever addressed that way - to stop kicking someone’s chair, touching someone’s things, saying someone’s name, copying them, etc - EVER do that shit again, at least in my class. After a certain point, you can use “No means no.” for things other than sex and most* kids will internalize why that’s important. Promise. *the ones who didn’t had other behavioral issues and they wouldn’t let me address it the way I wanted - which is why I’m a fucking social worker instead of a teacher, in case anyone’s wondering.
