For the briefest of moments thereโs one prominent thought that swarms Ryanโs mind as he takes in the sight of the man before him, is this someone heโd be trying to ignore?ย Perhaps someone heโd already met on a drunken night, stumbled home in the dark with and left before the sun rose and he could really remember his face. It wouldnโt have been a first, but Ryan his best not to get too involved with those in Hawkins. Heโd made the mistake one too many times in his youth, and all he learnt was that everyone talks to everyone.ย So he found the only way to keep people out of his relationship, was in general to keep his relationships to himself.
But he was only human, and Ryan would be the first to tell you heโs made more than one mistake in his life.
โRyan,โ Perhaps it was the outlandish confidence in the other, or perhaps it was the way alcohol had started to warm Ryanโs cheeks, but he couldnโt quite hide the amused grin as he watched the way his hand grabbed his arm before a firm handshake. Heโd turn towards him as he sat, knees grazing his as he drowned out the rest of the bar and just focused his attention on Thad.ย โHawkins born and raised Iโm afraid, but I donโt always make it down to the drove of alcoholics.โ
.
โryan,โ thad echoed, sighing dreamily as he cast a warm smile in the otherโs direction. he permanently fixed his hand to ryanโs elbow, making his intention clear. he figured, if the stranger wasnโt feeling it by now, he wouldโve said something or left. but that was only an educated guess, thad didnโt find himself often rejected (unless by his father) so that was a totally foreign feeling for him! he didnโt even know what signs to look for because that was how badly everyone wanted to be with him all of the time. or at least, that was how thad saw it.ย ย โoh, hawkins isnโt so bad.โ he defended, intentionally batting his eyelashes when he very sincerely added,ย โthere are worse places you could be! like afghanistan.โย
as a test, thad retracted his hand and crossed his arms, curious to see if ryan would make a move towards him,ย โan alcoholic? is that what you think of me?โ he feigned offended,ย โiโm a hardworking man!โ while he didnโt touch ryan with his hands, he did lean towards him ever so slightly, pressing his knees fully into the otherโs when he pleaded,ย โtell me what you really think, i know itโs not that.โ slowly, thad leaned away from ryan so he could sip on his drink and take another look from him head to toe. insane shoulders thad thought.ย
he glanced over his own shoulder just to verify there was no straggler he knew in the bar and when it was clear there wasnโt he doubled down with the looks while continuing with polite conversation,ย โso, what is it you do again?โย

โI am not saying you are stupid, I was simply asking for specifications. Of course you know your tape. So, general purpose. Iโll see what we have.โ This guy really seemed in big need for his tape for him to be this.. theatrical about it. His lips pressed further into a smile at the otherโs suggestion. This guy was basically a genius, he thought sarcastically. โUnderstaffed because my cashier is on special leave.โ โฆ.Was she, though? โThank you for the suggestion, though.โ
Johnny took a lazy stroll to the backroom, taking his sweet time to get the box that held the most common kind of duct tape he sold. For a moment he wondered why a mechanic would be in such a dire need for the item and he hoped the other wasnโt fixing tires with general purpose duct tape. He came back with the box under his arm and it gave a light thud as he put it on the counter. He decided to bring the entire box so he could immediately refill the empty shelves afterwards. He quickly scribbled a reminder on a nearby notepad to order another box later that day โ it was the only way he would remember.
โHow many do you need, sir?โ
.
โwhatever, man.โ thad scoffed. he knew what he heard from this johnny fellow. he didnโt need to be gaslit in the melvaldโs line. he was so rudely torn from his thoughts with the need to correct the clerk again,ย โno, not general purpose. i donโt want that flimsy scotch trash. i need duct tapeย and electrical tape. a roll each.โ sure, thad was particular, but he wouldnโt settle for less than what he wanted in any regard. especially not when it came to his babies-- the carโs he worked on.ย โspecial leave?โ he scoffed,ย โthatโs a one way street to termination.โ thadโs father might not have thought he was fit to run the business, but he at least knew that cutting employees slack in such a manner absolutely would not do.ย
thad made a show of johnnyโs absence. a performance complete with checking his watch, crossing his arms, huffing, shaking his head, and looking to the people behind him in line with a condescending can you believe this? when johnny took his time returning, thad dug around in the box, flicking his eyes to the worker,ย โi said one each.โ did he have to do everything himself? he pulled out rolls sufficient enough to fix the air duct he and steve had built out to the garage,ย โhow much will it be?โ oh thad, impatient as ever.ย
generallymelvaldโ:
John pressed his lips together and decided not to comment. He decided not to say that there was such a thing as general purpose duct tape and general tape. And that this was the first time the other even mentioned anything about electrical tape and how that, as well, was something completely different from duct tape. He kept a patient smile upon his features, got one of the tape rolls out of the box and gave it a light tap. โThis one is duct tape. I can go and get some electrical if you need.โ John gave the people in line an apologetic nod, choosing to ignore the comment about his staff as well.
And suddenly he remembered very well who this guy was. Thad Bradshaw. Johnโs occasional visits to the garage, his old place of work as a teenager, couldnโt leave Thad Bradshaw unnoticed. โOne roll of duct tapeโs nine dollars fifty-eight cents. Electrical is around three. Unless you want a big roll.โ
.
โyes, i clearly said i needed both.โ thad said, throwing his hands up in exasperation. he understood what it was like to be a working man. it was exhausting and tough work, but that was what made it so rewarding. obviously, this gentleman knew nothing of what that felt like. given that he was having such great difficulty in meeting customer satisfaction. he wouldnโt be surprised if this establishment was in the shitter the next couple of years, but he would save that rant for steveโs willing ears back at the shop.ย โi do want a big roll, actually.โ he huffed. thad bradshaw was no amateur and a measly, standard size of duct tape would not do for stock at the shop. it was laughable. as if thad hadnโt done enough pushing of the other man around, he gestured to the popsicles and beer on the counter,ย โand how much for the remainder of my items, sir?โ he sneered.

looking over at thad, steve smiled softly at the sight of his son in the manโs arms, barely awake. he wondered for a bit if he was doing all of this wrong, being a dad - because everyone else seemed to make ford asleep faster than he did. there was usually tons of crying involved and ford would throw various tantrums before he actually fell asleep. steve didnโt reach out so he could hold his son, instead moved his hand so he could softly caress the kidโs face, a loving look on his face before he looked over at thad.ย โi owe you one, thank you man.โ he said, standing there as he slowly opened his arms so thad could hand him thad over. but thatโs when he heard the otherโs suggestion and he thought about it for a few moments, before nodding his head. a few beers wouldnโt hurt - he could use some after the night he had.
โyou know what? why not?โ he whispered back, smiling over at thad and then taking ford away from his arms gently.ย โiโll put him down, you get those beers opened and ready.โ he said, being gentle with ford as he carried him towards thadโs room, lowering him and laying him down, caressing his face and then kissing his forehead, before he walked back to the living room, plopping down on the couch and running his hand over his face, grabbing one of the beers.ย โi hope he wasnโt hard to deal with tonight. but how are you doing?โ he asked, patting the man firmly on the back in a friendly manner, before he took a sip of his beer and let himself relax on the couch.
.
โno ya donโt, pal.โ thad told steve. if he were someone else, heโd probably want some kind of tradeoff, but beyond being a coworker steve was a friend. not many people took to thad, but steve seemed to understand him in a way others in the town didnโt.ย โplus i like the kid, we have fun.โ it was thadโs way of saying anytime. he wasnโt exactly known for his generosity, and while he liked living in hawkins, he didnโt like most of the residents enough to lend them his good favor. thad even rocked back and forth as steve said hello to his son. he briefly wondered what he might have wound up like if his father cared about him the way steve cared about ford, but such darkness was drowned out by steve agreeing to stay the night.ย
thad grinned when the offer was accepted,ย โon it.โ he helped transition ford into steveโs arm with an affectionate pinch of the cheek,ย โsleep tight young stud.โ then made his way into the kitchen and called back to steve,ย โyou might be able to catch the second half of the game if youโre quick!โ having steve over made thad so giddy, he made a mental note that he should host more. he settled down on the couch with an open beer and fluffed the pillow on his couch for steve.ย โoh, no, he was great. heโs always great for me.โ he said, smug before taking another sip,ย โoh iโm good, sore, after today. the shop has been so ridiculously hot lately. and i got into an argument with some dolt at melvaldโs.โ he ranted before thinking to ask,ย โhow was the search?โ
who: cole montgomery & @shophands where: thee auto shop
Cole's arrival in Hawkins had been... fitting, to say the least. He'd flown into O'Hare, not at all trusting that folks from Indiana knew how to operate aircraft, and rented the first available sedan-- A Honda something. He hadn't planned ahead at all, and Cole hadn't really driven since he was.... probably twenty-two, so the long drive to Buttfuck, Indiana was an adjustment period.
Even though it had been years since he'd driven, the blowout was not Cole's fault. He's not sure that it was anyone else's, either, when he climbed out of the newly scraped rental and inspected the now-shredded tire. Thankfully, a handsome stranger had arrived just in time to give Cole a lift to his hotel-- a welcome reprieve from the heat and a nice distraction for the night.
But now... now Cole had to get the rental car fixed so he could find Max and get the hell outta Dodge. So much for a quick weekend trip. Hawkins didn't seem to have many options as far as mechanics went, so Cole followed the hotel clerk's directions to the nearest shop and hoofed it like it was 1950. By the time he walked up to the obnoxiously loud shop, Cole's hair was sticking to the back of his neck and he was loosening his tie to help with the heat flushing his face. Fuck, how was Indiana hotter than LA?
He locked eyes with the first mechanic he saw, allowed his gaze to linger as he undid another button to loosen his collar, and cleared his throat impatiently. "Are you busy? I assume you have a tow truck. My car--" he hesitated to include that it was a rental. Cole may not drive, but he knew how these places worked. Anything to add on an extra hundred dollars to somebody desperate. "It blew a tire off I-65." Cole waited, watching the man for a beat before interjecting again: "So, tow truck? I can show you where it is."
thad loved working on the cars in late summer. most mechanics couldnโt stand the sweltering heat from both being below the vehicles and the sun that warmed up the garage. but thad was different. beyond adoring his job for the actual act of it, he loved the aesthetics. thad couldnโt get enough of the smell of grease, how it looked smudged across his face, the way it felt when he stepped into a simmering shower at the end of each night to wash away his stink.ย
today was no exception to being eager to get to work on the cars. thad was even out, shirtless, in the lot working on his junker passion project. it was slow today. most of the noise in the shop likely being music and dicking around. heโd gotten through all the oil changes and tune ups that had come through the shop. it was free reign. that was, until thad heard the familiar crunching of the gravel lot and turned around. before he could even ask can i help you? the man in the very nice suit was already voicing what he needed.
he almost missed what the stranger was saying to him while admiring his red cheeks and the sweat on his forehead. or the way he tugged on his collar. god. thad snapped himself back into it by wiping his forehead with a grease filled rag. his eyebrows threaded as he tried to recall what was being said to him.ย โnot busy.โ thad answered a bit belated. blown out tire? no problem.ย โhow far up 65?โ he asked, slamming the hood of the truck down.ย โitโs .50 cents per mile i have to drive.โ thad laid it out,ย โplus the cost of the tire. if you want to save money though, i donโt recommend the tow.โ he explained, condescending. while it was nice to see a man with a decent since of dress around hawkins for once, he looked like...well...a bit of a pansy. there was no way he understood what was being said to him.ย โif you know what tire size your car has, we can just change it on the highway, pay in advance, then youโre on your way.โ thad looked more smug this time when he eyed the customer from head to tow,ย โif you donโt know your tire size, i just need the make and model.โย
farmingsโ:
Ryan wouldnโt admit as much, but heโd enjoy the company, or the illusion of it anyway. Sat around those who idly chatter and music that plays quietly beneath it all, pool balls clinking against one another as they bound about the table. Something that fills the room with anything but silence, it was why heโd find himself there most night. Even if he was sitting alone. There was an ease to being surrounded by others, something that the silence of his home wouldnโt offer. But that didnโt mean he had to talk to people to enjoy the company.
The man leaning against the bar besides him came as a surprise, enough of one for Ryan to glance over in his direction taking in the sight of him. Heโd attempt to swallow the amusement he felt towards the incredibly bold claim the other presented. A claim like that spikes all kinds of thoughts racing through a manโs mind- the first and more forefront thought is that the statement was something youโd say to another who has a reasonย to be ignoring you. Heโd recount his memory, if this stranger standing before him was someone maybe he shouldย remember, after all he wouldnโt be the most sober every time he took someone home.ย
But heโd take in the manโs features, his stance, the way the words left his mouth, and finally Ryan would ask, โDo I know you well enough to be ignoring you?โ
.
the question tugged a playful grin onto thadโs lips. okay. he could handle playing a cat and mouse game, hard to get.ย โwell, you know me now. so no more excuses, pal.โ thad pointed out suggestively, bringing his glass to his lips for another drink. when he set it back down, he wasted no time being obvious in the way he eyed the stranger. he painstakingly raked his eyes up and down his face, noting his small eyes, where his hair fell. thadโs gaze even fell to oggle the strangerโs shoulders. it was late, he was several drinks in, and well, generally shameless. now his prospect would know it too.ย
โare you from around here?โ thad asked, stirring his drink with itโs straw, intensely keeping his stare locked. it was a genuine surprise heโd never seen the man around before. thad was a local at this point, constantly hanging around at the hideaway or wherever else. he knew most everyone in hawkins for better or for worse,ย โiโve never seen you in here before.โ he said obviously, then slid his hand over on the bar, first to the guyโs elbow for a squeeze, then for him to shake,ย โiโm thad.โย

Johnnyโs gaze returned back and he managed a kind smile for his own amusement. โThere must be some in the aisle, for I donโt remember anyone purchasing large amounts of duct tape. But then again, we have different kinds of duct tape; weโve got general purpose, industrial grade, professional grade, gafferโs, stucco, true, coated cloth.. you name it. Iโm sure some of those must be there.โ The ever friendly tone would distract from the fact he was actually mocking the other. That was what being a store owner was all about, right? Feigning friendliness when costumers were rude. They were โKingโ, after all.
โOr were you looking for anything specific? If thatโs out, I am sure I got some more in the back.โ

he sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as he tried to level with the guy,ย โlisten, iโm just asking for some standard issue, gray, duct tape.โ thad held up a finger to convey how serious he was,ย โit has to be gray.โ anything else wouldโve been tacky, of course. he dropped his hand, then had another idea,ย โlisten, if youโre understaffed, you gotta hire more employees.โ it was that simple. some people.

who: steve harrington & @shophandsโ where: thadโs apartment
when thad had first suggested that he could babysit his kid, steve had to admit that he was a bit terrified to do it. who knew what could happen to ford while he was in thadโs hands? not that he didnโt trust him, steve had found a way to somehow trust him when they started working together. and now? steve would consider him a good friend. and good friends babysat each otherโs kids, right? luckily for steve, thad didnโt have any kids so he didnโt have to worry about that. but he did have to worry when it came to thad babysitting ford. at least the first time. after spending the whole time worrying about ford, it was shocking for steve to see that everything was actually okay. and it had turned out that thadโฆ was a great babysitter? that was something he didnโt expect.
but now, steve was actually thankful that he could leave ford with thad. especially with everything that was happening, the searches for luke wheeler only taking longer and longer as they tried to look in further each time they went out. after another night of no success, steve went back to thadโs apartment, his feet sore from the walking, to retrieve ford. as he climbed up the stairs, he knocked on the door a couple of times before thad finally opened. with a warm smile, steve nodded his head as he walked inside.ย โhey man.โ he said, patting the otherโs shoulder on the way in.ย โthank you again for taking care of ford. howโs he doing?โ he asked, turning to look at him.
.
kids were kind of like little aliens to thad. he was an only child, the only juvenile he ever engaged with for long periods of time were himself. and sure, luke had been born during his engagement to nancy, but that was totally different than his bond with ford. and steve for that matter. it had taken thad a considerable amount of time to come around to the work force, but guys like steve made it easy. it just seemed like the both of them were on the same track, the same wavelength. so sure, thad spent a couple of hours free of charge showing ford john watersโ hairspray or explaining football teams to deaf ears. every single time it flew by and thad was always caught of guard by steveโs arrival.ย thad collected for, who was half asleep, up onto his hip. the door flung open and thad ushered steve in with a green.ย โi was just getting ready to put him down for the night.โ he whispered to steve, glancing toward the pack-and-play in his bedroom. by instinct, thad began to gently bounce ford in her arms, causing the toddler to slump against his shoulder, eyes fighting to stay open.ย โyou're welcome to stay until morning, pal.โ thad offered, still whispering and waiting for the approval of steve. if he wasnโt sold, he was about to be,ย โwe can finish the game.โ he coaxed, sing-songing.ย โiโve got an unopened six pack.โย

thad had grown to like melvaldโs. in the early years, when he was still with nancy, thad found himself regularly disgruntled over their lack of caviar or the fact the shopper was expected to carry bags out on their own. he got over those trivial qualms and in fact he often would run from the body shop to melvaldโs for the little things bossman forgot to buy-- electrical tape, duct tape, painters tape-- it was usually tape.ย
today, thad was less than pleased with the selection before him-- scotch tape, packing tap, no, no, no! none of this was what he needed! huffing, thad put his hands on his hips and looked from left to right while he angrily waited for an employee to come up and offer him help, but when nobody came, thad was only further outraged. he marched up to the front of the store (stopping only to pick up some popsicles and beers for the work fridge.) slamming the six pack and cardboard container of otter pops down, thad began his monologue,ย โi would like to buy these...โ a deep breath in,ย โbut first, mr....โ he craned his neck to read the employeeโs name tag, which he reached out and flicked when he was done reading,ย โmr. johnny, that i waited in aisle seven with no assistance for near ten minutes! how do you run out of duct tape? huh? what kind of establishment even is this?โย

๐๐๐: thad bradshaw & @farmingsโ ๐๐๐๐: gay s being gay ๐๐๐๐๐: hawkins hottest night club is....the hideaway!
thad was more of a cold beer on the porch after a long day of work kind of guy. cocktails and champagne were his past, he was a working class man now and he did working class things! he probably couldnโt survive the likes of hawkins without crafting his carefully assembled small town aesthetic. and while thad didnโt necessarily have to vocabulary to communicate that, he fully leaned into that aspect of his life.ย
heโd gotten off work late though, not because his boss had asked him to stay, but the old fifties camaro in the shop was a beauty, and he could hardly keep his hands off of it. thad didnโt even care if he didnโt get paid extra to do all of the little extra touches and tunings he was doing, anything to keep the car in the shop just a couple of days longer.ย
anyhow, the sun had already set, so there was no point in sitting on his porch. to the hideaway it was! he ordered a beer and watched the game on the little tv in the corner and traipsed around the bar, even playing a couple of games of pool here and there. thad treated the hideaway like he did every other place he did-- like he owned it. thad was in a great mood! it was a great night! except for one little problem, the farmhand in the corner that heโd never seen a day in his life simply wouldnโt look at him! eventually, enough hours passed, enough alcohol was consumed, and enough people had filtered out of the hideaway for thad to march up to him, leaning against the bar. he glanced at ryan, brows raised as he boldly claimed,ย โyouโre ignoring me. why?โ then took a sip of his drink.ย
Today was one of those days where he really had to keep himself from redecorating the whole place. Not in a Christmas sorta way, but more like.. moving shit for it to be more convenient? Better looking? Could it look better? Probably not. Besides, these ideas would usually leave Johnny in one of the isles, surrounded by crap, playing with some sort of unimportant object he had never paid attention to before. And would stuff get done? No. It would just be a mess.
Standing still behind the counter and waiting for costumers wasn't really his thing, though. Wasn't that why they hired Jessica? Teenagers liked to stand still, chew gum and give insincere smiles to costumers, right? Then where the hell was she? Oh yeah, right, dental appointment. Or did her grandmother run away again from that nursing home?
He leaned against the counter, puffed his cheeks before letting out the air through pressed lips. John blinked repeatedly when he realized a costumer was looking at him and he quickly came back to reality. He straightened his posture and cleared his throat, slightly stumbling over his words. "Yeah, uhh, hi, can I help you?"
thad had grown to like melvaldโs. in the early years, when he was still with nancy, thad found himself regularly disgruntled over their lack of caviar or the fact the shopper was expected to carry bags out on their own. he got over those trivial qualms and in fact he often would run from the body shop to melvaldโs for the little things bossman forgot to buy-- electrical tape, duct tape, painters tape-- it was usually tape.ย
today, thad was less than pleased with the selection before him-- scotch tape, packing tap, no, no, no! none of this was what he needed! huffing, thad put his hands on his hips and looked from left to right while he angrily waited for an employee to come up and offer him help, but when nobody came, thad was only further outraged. he marched up to the front of the store (stopping only to pick up some popsicles and beers for the work fridge.) slamming the six pack and cardboard container of otter pops down, thad began his monologue,ย โi would like to buy these...โ a deep breath in,ย โbut first, mr....โ he craned his neck to read the employeeโs name tag, which he reached out and flicked when he was done reading,ย โmr. johnny, that i waited in aisle seven with no assistance for near ten minutes! how do you run out of duct tape? huh? what kind of establishment even is this?โย
If Willa doesnโt come back, thatโs fine,ย โcause I donโt need love. Itโs like a superpower. And if she comes back and doesnโt love me, thatโs okay, too,ย โcause I donโt need it.
