BIRTH . everett is born in 1994 along with his twin sister , eleanor . his biological father is out of the picture before the moment of his first breath, a pathological liar who never planned to stick around and leaves their mother in the lurch. enter louie andrews , the nicest of the nice, he takes on the twins before they’re even born and is their father from their very first breath. he loves them viciously, passionately, wholly and the eldest andrews twins are raised just the same as the three younger sisters that tumble along . 

CHILDHOOD . both everett and eleanor are problem children, they push, they pull, they fight each other tooth and nail for any small victory. if you asked everett why he behaved the way he did then he couldn’t tell you, his thoughts were always a thousand miles a minute and he could never settle on one thing to think about. from a young age everett develops a complex about his biological father, obsessively pinning together all of his worst qualities and believing they must be inherited. this diminishes his sense of responsibility and accountability in life. he fights against the current every single time, always bringing trouble to the front door and being the one that ruins every family event. at first, everett gets away with it because a lot of his ploys and plots bring a smile to his families faces but as time passes on, the jokes get old but everett never stops . 

DEPRESSION . there’s no big cause , that’s the problem . he spends so much time searching for one that he feels even more confused about what the prolem is , he has a family who loves him , he’s a smart kid , he even has a bunch of friends . he’s well loved , well liked , for what he has to offer ; that brain of his and all the crazy ways he uses it . he’s a hard kid to keep up with , struggles to get things done or hyperfocuses all at once , he dates every girl and boy in his class for less than six weeks and talks his way out of any corner . teachers love him , he makes his brother laugh , him and his sister are best friends and the new little ones in the family are enamoured by everything he does . god , he loves the light . he loves the attention . he’s a performer through and through , he’s fourteen when he first catches a glimpse of the darkness and he doesn’t recognise it but by the end of that year it swallows him alive . everett slips into a depression so deep and dark but it never touches the surface , never shines through . he’s still laughing but it doesn’t quite feel the same . no one notices , he doesn’t want them to but every night when his brain starts taking over , it’s writing an ending to his story that terrifies him . what’s scarier is that by sixteen , he’s not scared anymore . . . he has to find something else to feel alive . to cling onto . 

ADDICTION . everett’s addiction doesn’t happen overnight , it’s an unbecoming state for him but it begins on his sixteenth birthday . from that point onwards he’s caught in a never ending spiral of substance and alcohol abuse , it’s not some small feat . he begins to forget what it felt like to be sober , he doesn’t even remember if he ever was . finally the racing thoughts , the anxiety and heart palpitations . . . all become a thing of the past . the numbness comes afterwards but he just keeps taking more , doing more , until he’s fearless , until he can’t feel a thing except blind hearty thrill . after ten years , everett is a full blown drug addict unable to get clean . he has tried and failed many times but he’ll never admit it . he’d rather bite the hand that reaches out to help him than accept it , not because he doesn’t think he should change or deserve help but because he’s so sick of failing . he thinks that this is the life that was made for him , that there’s no other way out . because , without the drugs , there’s only the deep unending emptiness that he felt before that made him want to disappear . 

ELEANOR . for a long time everett and his twin share everything , putting every effort into protecting their younger brother from his own seeming lack of intelligence but asher is a good boy . he isn’t smart but he’s a good kid . the younger twins rarely end up over involved due to a large age gap but these three are thick of thieves . when eleanor doesn’t return home one night when she’s been out partying then the family boils over and asher jumps on his bike and rides away from home , everett being annoyed that everyone’s up in arms . asher finds eleanor passed out in the local park after drinking too much . from that point onwards eleanor changes and no longer supports everetts lifestyle leading to a feeling of deep betrayal , it doesn’t matter how many trips his siblings wake him up from , he refuses to change . 

JAIME . everett has had eight other relationships but he and jaime are together for five long years , five painful years , five years that he’s pretty sure are spent putting her through a torture that he simply can’t compute . jaime is obsessed with everett , she will never let him go and he’s always honest , he tells her , this is gunna kill you . jaime says she can’t live without everett and everett says , i can’t live with myself . every time he tries to leave then she pulls back twice as hard and sometimes it’s easy to go with the current than against it . half the time he’s the best boyfriend on earth and the other half he’s not even a person . when he lays in bed watching her sleep , he cries . when he stands in front of her as she screams and cries about how he’s  breaking her , he feels nothing at all . they’d still be together today if it wasn’t for her driving his car under the influence into a ditch ; everett takes the blame as respite for all the years he hurt her and jaime’s dad forbids her from ever seeing him again . she listens .
