wait omg I was only a few rows behind you tonight! That was some jump-off
@dressagedawg has told me about Anerican show fees and basically you guys are mental. “Trailer in fee”? REALLY?
Oh yeah. At my last rated show, the office fee was $100 a week.
What on earth even IS an office fee? Like it sounds like your shows just make up random fees for greed.
They do. An office fee is basically the processing fee.
I’m going to break that one down as someone who has run a show, because I have. Every fee is based off SOMEONE ELSE getting a cut, be it the facility (stalls/haul in), the judge (class fees), the TD (a little of everything), etc. Your office fee will help pay your secretary, and usually is non-refundable even if you scratch/vet out because all of the time for processing was still taken.
Well our shows are run by volunteers so the class entry fees cover judges basically, and the rest goes to the club hosting the show. What is a TD? If we have stalls the riders pay for that but we don’t have a haul in fee (???) because… Well what even is that? We park at the riding clubs parking space.
Everything is run by volunteers except for Secretary and Manager are paid positions.
TD is the Technical Delegate. They’re required to be hired and it’s a trained position through the national Orgs. They’re basically there to make sure everything is kosher and nobody is breaking the rules, though around here they don’t seem to be doing their job very well.
You have to pay either a haul in fee OR a stall fee. You only pay a haul in fee if you’re hauling in for the day and working off your trailer, which not all shows allow, so those shows wouldn’t have that fee applicable.
Ok we have technical delegates too and they get paid, we pay judges and we pay the TD but we don’t pay a secretary or manager. Everyone working at our shows are volunteers.
Why would you not allow people working from their trailer and why would you charge them for it?? That is the one I really don’t get because… It makes zero sense. I’m not sure where you host your shows but ours are basically always at a riding school so everything is already there. You line up your trailers in a nice line and you off load your horse to tack up, you ride, put your horse back in, if you did well you offload at the end of your class for prize giving, otherwise you go home? (This is for one day shows)
For shows that run several days you still get people who only ride one day or who live close so they trailer in like 2-3 days and go home inbetween. But a haul in fee does not exist here.
Just curious how much would a show a couple hours away about 3-5 days long cost you in your country? Genuinely just curious and would like to compare the cost to one of our shows.
I went to a show a few weeks ago where I showed for 2 days and stayed 2 nights, let me check!
Ok so I paid $93 for a stall for 2 nights and $58 for two entry fees (regional FEI classes) and… That was it. So $151 in total for showing 2 days and stalls, then we also stayed at a hotel but that isn’t a show fee.
We also had one I had to cancel where stabling Thursday to Sunday was $150 and the entry fee (also FEI) was around $35 per class. But you never show more than 3 days in a row here.
AHAHAHAHAHAAAAA omg I’m moving to Sweden. Most USDF shows where I live can set you back close to $500 for a 3 day show just in fees and stabling, not even costing food and hotel for you, since a lot of shows are often too far away to just pop in and out of.
I can understand now why people on tumblr give me the side eye when I go showing left right and centre all summer. It’s bc I go to a show just for the day and pay $35 for the class and go home and the US people think I spend their kind of money every other week. Eh no. Nope nope nope.
I will never understand haul in fees. Like, it’s not costing the hosting facility anything to let me park in their field for a few hours… Office fees I kind of get, though it sucks that scratching out doesn’t get those back when you have vet documentation. I can understand not getting it back if you just decide you can’t make it.
At Del Mar the haul in “grounds fee” is because the show literally has to pay for every horse that rides on the property every day. So you pay that fee per day not even per weekend. WHICH IS WHY WE ARE STABLING AND CRYING OVER FEES.
But I digress.
Well that makes sense in that I understand that if the show has to pay per horse then they will charge but then I don’t understand why they do that omg this is all so confusing I am only little.
And then don’t even get me started on boarding. The A circuit barns around us are $850 a month and the other one is $975 a month. Any other boarding barn is no less than $350, normally you find barns in the $400 range.
I would be ecstatic to find an $850 or $975 barn near me... try $1200
Not knowing when or if you’ll be able to sit on your horse again is not something I’d wish on anyone.
No matter what kind of ride you had, how big you jumped, or how nicely they moved, pat your horse and be thankful you have a sound and healthy partner.
I’m gonna miss this stupid city. After 22 years of living here, it’s finally becoming cool. Bummer.
But you’re gonna come up to Boston and drink with me and judge people (not necessarily linked activities) so it’s ok
