Jaime repeats what he’s been taught by his father, and by the privileged society of which he’s been a part – the rule-abiding society, the Kingsguard, the ones who say “a royal decree is the most important thing in the world, the force of law is the most important thing in the world, and if you disagree i will literally gather an army to slaughter you and your entire family while you beg for mercy”.

Brienne says: Fuck royalty, fuck decrees, fuck loyalty, this isn’t right.

And Jaime turns away, because he agrees. He’s always agreed. He chose to ignore laws and vows and do what was right at fifteen, when he murdered Aerys. He ignored his physical safety and position to help Brienne, when they were caught by the Brave Companions. 

He doesn’t always do the Right Thing over the Lawful Thing, but it’s always his first inclination. And Brienne reminds him of that with her actions and her arguments and, eventually, even by her memory. 

Our only response was to keep on going and fuck everything. Pile misery upon misery, heap it up on a spoon and dissolve it with a drop of bile, then squirt it into a stinking, purulent vein, and do it all over again. Keep on going, getting up, going out, robbing, stealing, fucking people over, propelling ourselves with longing towards the day that it would all go wrong. Because no matter how much you stash or how much you steal, you never have enough. No matter how often you go out and rob and fuck people over, you always need to get up and do it all over again.
