What a Year

Family and Friends,

I hope this finds you well this season. It’s been a full year for myself (and for the crazy world around us) and I just wanted to share a little bit about what I’m up to. This past May I graduated from Warren Wilson College, in Swannanoa, North Carolina, traveled throughout South America, and have since started working with the Center for Coalfield Justice as their Community Organizer.

Incase you didn’t know CCJ is a grassroots environmental non-profit based in Washington, PA (south of Pittsburgh). It is a dream come true to be working with communities, creating relationships, and moving towards a more just world.

So, what am I specifically working on? My day-to-day work changes as the communities around me change. I am currently focused on supporting two communities. One is a community that is fighting a proposed coal mine and the second is a community that has suffered the effects of coal ash (a by-product of burning coal) for far too long. Working with the community affected by coal ash, I have been able to combine my interests of environmental justice and prison justice work because there is also a maximum security prison situated next to the dump. I have been working to support these communities through providing space, organizational support, and opportunities for leadership development. It has been wonderful getting to know each of these communities and the others that we work to support. Friends, family, and loved ones,

I’m writing to connect with you about an experience that is important to me. This coming spring I am co-leading an intercultural service-learning trip to the Pine Ridge Lakota Reservation in South Dakota for Warren Wilson College students. I first became impassioned about the Lakota people and the Pine Ridge Reservation after a couple experiences.

First off, I took part in the editing process for a film called “Red Cry” (you can watch it free here http://goo.gl/g8Pz8e ). I also read “Days of Destruction Days of Revolt” a book by Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco, and lastly, I had many peers who have returned from their experience on Pine Ridge Reservation who have shared many memories about their trip. These were just a couple of the ways that I began to learn about a culture and people who have been wiped off the map of many history textbooks.

During our spring break, Warren Wilson students will travel to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota to engage with and learn from the Lakota people. Before embarking on this experience, students will develop an understanding of Lakota culture through workshops. Additionally, students will learn about the complexity of historical marginalization, traumas, and on-going financial poverty of the Lakota. Through immersion in Lakota culture while on Pine Ridge, students will learn Lakota lessons on spirituality, health, and history as well as resiliency and strength of the human spirit. During this experience students will work with issues of food insecurity, working with Conscious Alliance, a Colorado-based nonprofit that works with youth empowerment and hunger relief. Students will sort and deliver an estimated 20,000 pounds of food for families on the reservation. In addition, students will also participate in a number of service activities throughout the week. In the past this has included creating garden beds, trash and litter clean up, and building fences for the community.

In order to make this trip possible we need to raise $4,000.00--this goes towards paying our hosts and community partners, travel, and housing. Excited to be Picturelife’s CEO!

Picturelife Co-Founder Nate Westheimer addresses new role as CEO.

Back in 2011, Charles Forman, Jacob DeHart and I came together around the idea that having a lifetime of photos should bring incredible, worry-free joy. Soon thereafter we founded Picturelife and have been hard at work building an amazing product and amazing team.

Recently Charles and I had been having conversations about roles in the company, and what the company needs over the next few years. After some time exploring this, I am excited to announce that I have accepted the position as CEO of Picturelife, and that Charles, who first served as CEO, has chosen to move on to produce and direct a film. Charles won’t be far away, though: he will continue to serve the company as Advisor to the CEO.

This change happens at an exciting time for the Picturelife team: August was our largest month of customer growth since we founded the company and the other week The Verge published an exhaustive review of every cloud photo solution on the market, and singled Picturelife out as the most powerful and comprehensive product available (beating out some pretty big tech giants!).

We have many amazing new features and services coming down the pike for our customers, but for everything so far we owe Charles much gratitude for his leadership and dedication to this company. We certainly wouldn’t be here without him. So, I asked Charles to help me end this blog post with a personal note:

I founded Picturelife with Nate and Jacob because it was a product I needed to exist for myself. In a few short years we’ve built an incredible team and an incredible product together, and now, as Picturelife’s most passionate customer, I can’t wait to see where Nate, Jacob and the rest of the team take things. ~ Charles

Lakota people and allies successfully blockaded a beer delivery in White Clay, Neb. yesterday but not without several instances of police brutality and excessive use of force.

Throughout the blockade, the people remained non-violent but police responded with force. For example, the man in the above photo who has a taser held to his neck was merely sitting on a truck, preventing the liquid genocide from being delivered. For peaceful protest, he was threatened with torture and potentially deadly force.

The woman at the top was choked for walking down the street legally and exercising her right to peaceably assemble.

This level of brutality and violence is regular from the police at White Clay, the poison patrol that protects the moneyed beer distributor over the interests of the people to determine for themselves what is best for their community.

Huge amounts of beer and liquor daily are smuggled onto the Oglala Lakota Nation (Pine Ridge) and the Sheridan County Sheriffs do nothing about that.

To help the demonstrators of the 24/7 Zero Tolerance Camp, tell the police the whole world is watching their brutal tactics.
