Y'all just do not understand.
I grew up in the Deep South of America, in the 1970s. Back then, having Interracial anything on media was a huge fuckin' deal. The Interracial kisses (there's more than 1!) in Star Trek were just a few years past, when I was born.
In High School, a White girl who fancied me was ordered to stop "hanging out" with me by her Parents, unknown to me for decades. This was late 1980s America.
It took a long time, a lot of literal blood, sweat, and tears, to have anything like Bridergton, like the "normalizing" of Hetero Interracial relationships on screen. And there are people fighting to erase it, still t this day...
...even as some of them hide among the asshats who hate on Franchaela. On working to normalize people, of all genders, being allowed to love and be loved without having to pass thru fictional tollgates of approvals, of finding that love "the right way".
I'm old enough to also recall when people said it was "unrealistic" for Willow to identify as a Lesbian. Who would insist Whedon -- who we now know the measure of, in full -- did it for ratings, or claimed that she "had to be Bisexual".
Those were untrue then, and even less now that Queer people, of all manner of attractions (or none), are far better known. To see echoes of the woefully unaware ideas of decades ago still persist, distresses me.
John fans: I beg you, don't be like them. Don't be hatin'. Francesca Bridgerton, the character, should be allowed to move on, to heal, to find new love. And that it's with a woman, a brilliant, caring, wonderful woman, is something to celebrate, not hate.
Don't let how the book did it hold you from seeing new possibilities, new ways to love. And for certain, don't be afraid of what's to come, please.
For I have lived in that fear. It will do no one good, and far too many, ill.
