hi! I'm practically a newbie to bookbinding but eight now I'm making some boxes (11x11") and I was wondering how could I make them endurable enough like, I don't want the corners to fall apart, I would like to put some support around the corners.. could you help me? Thank you so much.
Hey Anon,I’m terribly sorry, but I don’t actually have any experience with boxes. Maybe someone reading this can reblog with an answer?
There are metal corners you can buy and screw onto the corners.or you could cover the edges with fabric, especially when the rest of the box is done with paper
The book I bound for this years bookbinding contest. Wish me luck! Silk head band, black and Red oasis goat leather, blood (just kidding, I mixed watercolours together) and white Gel pen.
It's me again! I'm not 100% sure how my book is bound, it feels like paper. The website says "Hardback - Deluxe edition, printed on silver, matt laminated, gold and silver foil stamped, embossed." you can see it by googling gothic fantasy series by flametree publishing, if that helps. it's a black matte book with shiny green scrollwork all over. thanks again!
to be honest I have never encountered a book where the binding in itself was reluctant to open - quite on the other side; a few of my first books refused to close all the way!
Apparently the best way to break in a new book is like this:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDZ5t8odnaEÂ , though, like I said, I (even as a bookbinder) rarely do anything else than pressing down the covers vertically and folding up the lose page of the end paper.
Hello! I was hoping you could help me with my quest to gently, properly break in my lovely new hardcover book. I've followed the system of "open each cover gently, and then work the pages open gently, a few at a time on each side to center, & repeat" but i'm 15 pages into reading, & I've been closing it repeatedly to deal with life intruding. Every time I close the front cover I hear & feel it creak alarmingly, near the spine. What else should I be doing to break it in safely? Thanks in advance.
At the bindery I work at we open the cover and just... press it down vertically at the hinge. However, we mainly make books covered in cloth or paper, leather and parchment are a whole other story. Maybe you can tell me a bit more about how the book is bound (cover material, way of binding?)

Today is my birthday, so I am uploading my favourite book.
The same paper as last time, this time with salmon coloured oasis goat leather and gilded dots as accents. God, I cannot wait to have photos good enough to put into this beauty.
Another “Edelpappband”, this time with an awesome mixture between jellyfish and kraken´, with a slight gold accent. One of my favourite papers ever.
ABGETAUCHT means “to dive down”, I thought it would fit nicely with the overall theme.
Red oasis goat leather, hand stitched silk headband, italian paper.
A “Edelpappband”, italian(florentine) paper which reminds me of old medieval book paintings with gold accents with leather to protect the edges. Hand stitched silk headband.
I just wanted to show you what else you can do with books. I love pop up books and I really have to make more of those.
Traveling book I bound for a friend from England who was heading for Japan. Two years later and she is still over there. I cannot wait to take a look at what she wrote in it. Maybe she will even allow me to show some of her entries to you guys?
I used part of an old map(1956) I bought at a market in Brighton (UK) and applied a foil to protect it. Maybe I should have added metal corners, I will have to remember that for the next time.

A Leporello I made, using kraft paper, black cardboard and a embossing stamp they had at school. I want it. I WANT IT.
The books I bound for my cousins for Christmas. I was playing around with the materials and was rather happy with the result. I don’t know what Hannes is doing with his, but Emma is using hers as a diary.
A half leather I bound, using oasis goat leather in a wonderful dark blue, and marbled paper I bought in Venice. Hand stitched silk head band, reading mark and coloured edge, using blue ink and gold wax usually used for polishing wooden picture frames. I think the effect goes rather nicely with the paper. Â
A copy of “The picture of Dorian Gray” I bound for a friend. It is her favourite book. And what would be more fitting than a grey cover and a picture frame?
One of my earlier notebooks. It looked rather boring and was more about the technique than about the looks, so I took it home and added the galaxy.

the calendar I am using this year. Handmade paper. I need to find an ink that is waterproof next time I do this.
A sketchbook I made which I am sadly using way to rarely.
