Hito Steyerl, The New Alphabet, Jan 12 2019 lecture fragment:
“Does AI have a shadow?”
Steyerl describes the process where hired scientists smash hundreds of window glasses, in order to train AI for a new security app...
"... A world created following the automation logic of a home security devise that is able to recognize the sound of broken glass (and the proliferation of such devises) combined with the trend of privatization of state structures like police/army and the increase of socio-economical inequality gap, could lead to the solution of a private militia (also in control of the real estate market) that would choose the rebuilding of the entire house instead of fixing its windows [like a luxury version of a war zone]
This is the kind of shadow part of AI related activities are fore-casting, even though the emerging AI “object” is not yet visible/understood.
So there is a large number of entities created by technologies which precede AI and contribute to its shadow; the defining name for the technology applied to the real existing version of AI, is “Artificial Stupidity,” like Soviet Union was the real existing version of Comunism. The result is an “Automated Deregulation” of society and the weaponization of AI..."
Hito Steyerl has been a professor of Current Digital Media at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich since 2024. Until 2024, she was a professor of New Media Art at the Berlin University of the Arts, where she co-founded the Research Center for Proxy Politics, together with Vera Tollmann and Boaz Levin
