July

@kingdonmicrofic: The Kingdon Microfic Challenge is a fic event designed to inspire the writing of Mel King/Frank Langdon microfics (fics under 500 words). Prompts are provided for every day of the month (July, in this edition).

August

@angstykingdonaugust: We hope Mel and Frank are ready to go through the wringer, because every Monday and Friday from August 3rd to August 28th they will be enduring Angsty Kingdon August. This is an event entirely centered around putting Mel and Frank through angsty situations.

December

@kingdon12days: Kingdon 12 Days is a holiday season celebration of all things Kingdon! This low-stakes fest spans all of December and invites creators to respond to a series of prompts around the theme of "Naughty or Nice."

It’s a slow day, so she thinks he'll duck out at seven sharp, home to the wife and the two little kids she’s heard about and never seen. But he stays three hours past sign-out with the overdose teen whose parents never showed, speaking in a low voice with the lights out until the boy sleeps.

She tries not to stand too close to him because she knows everyone thinks she has a crush. But some asshole in triage lunges for her and Frank steps right in the middle, takes a fist to the jaw, and apologizes to her after for the way he had knocked into her shoulder.

She won't ask about his marriage because it's none of her business and she doesn’t think she wants to know the truth anyway. But some days he wears the ring and some days he doesn’t.

Abby had always had a flair for the dramatic.

So maybe it shouldn’t surprise him that she serves him divorce papers mid-shift.

Is this as bad as the benzos confession? At least he and Robby were mostly alone for that. Now, his skin crawls as he feels every single eye in the ED on him. It’s only when Robby shouts an annoyed Get back to work! that the room starts to move at a semi-normal pace.

And it’s only then that he allows his eyes to scan the floor for her. He spots her outside of Central 6, hands looped behind her neck. He’s about to step into her line of vision when his phone vibrates in his pocket. He grabs it; hell, maybe it’s Abby’s lawyer. He has to start worrying about those things now.

Instead, it’s a message from Abby herself.

Surprise :)

A moment later, a photo comes through, one of him with his arm around Mel at the farmer’s market last Saturday morning. He’d told Abby he was working a double.

warning for infidelity

Abby likes to deliver big news with food.

When she dropped out of her Master’s program, she sat Frank down in front of his favorite movie, and hot popcorn in hand, broke the news.

When the kids got into the fancy preschool they couldn't actually afford, she waited until he was pulling his worn-out credit card from his wallet at the expensive sushi place to tell him.

So when she texts, “Making a big dinner, try to get out on time!” he sighs loud enough that Mel, nestled against his chest, looks up.

“What's wrong?” Her voice is sleepy the way it only gets after they've spent all day in bed together, touching and laughing and napping in turn.

She sounds relaxed, exactly how he feels when he's with her. And he doesn't want to ever leave.

“I have to leave earlier than usual tonight,” he says.

Abby thinks he's at work, and there are only so many shifts he can “work overtime” before she catches on.

“Nooo.” Mel always draws out the whine when she really doesn't want him to go. It's so fucking cute he can't stand it.

“I know, baby. I love you,” he says, pressing a kiss to her forehead before leaning down to press another to the tiny swell of her tummy. “And I love you, too.”

When he walks into his house a while later, Abby immediately ushers him to the dining room.

She’s lit candles, has music playing, and there's a feast of his favorite foods on the table. She sits down and looks up at him expectantly, but he can't force himself to sit.

Whatever it is, it's big, and it's expensive.

“Just tell me,” he whispers.

She frowns a little, the way she does when he's said something wrong.

Privately, Robby likes to keep a pretty close score. It’s for the best. If his sabbatical taught him anything, it’s that he can’t handle the loneliness and the disappointment anymore, so he has to do this, for his own sake, he has to keep count, a mental tally on who he can trust and who he can’t. 

Frank Langdon, he’s learned, he can’t trust. Not by quite a large margin. 

Which is maybe why he gets so annoyed when Langdon turns up at the Friendsgiving thing. He wasn’t even in the groupchat, the one Shen had started and called feastie boys🍗- it was just supposed to be the fuck-ups with nowhere better to be. Robby certainly qualifies, single and childless. But Langdon has a wife. Two kids, a dog, medical debt, a long recovery road ahead of him. It’s the holiday weekend and Langdon is supposed to be at home. He shouldn’t be here, and he really shouldn’t be all pressed up against Dr. King as if there’s not plenty of room around the table at this shitty all-you-can-eat homestyle buffet place.
