putting in my prediction before the new season drops:
i think laerryn is going to show up in some shape or form after zerxus and nydas’ appearances
It’s not a Discworld joke unless you read it, don’t parse it as a joke, and then carry on with your life for ten years until someone stops you to say something like “It’s a pavlovian response because the dog ate a pavlova” and you scream Terry’s name with enough indignant rage you hope it rattles the pillars of the multiverse so wherever his soul is he’ll hear it.
#i don’t think this is what pterry meant by ‘a man’s not dead while his name is still spoken’
I absolutely think it is
I read Jingo for the first time when I was 13.
I’m 33 now, and I still discover a new joke every time I reread it.
Terry was a comedic genius
#shoutout to the one in Soul Music about the leopard that got thrown out of the circus because it couldn't hear the ringmaster#it was several months after my second or third time reading the book that I clocked it was a Deaf Leopard (via @morkaischosen)
god DAMMIT
When I was informed that “Vetinari” is a pun on “Medici”. That pun was so painful I couldn’t even see it.
...are you FUCKING KIDDING ME.
*starts thunderously knocking on the doors of heaven*
get out here Terry I just wanna talk
Twurp’s Peerage made me throw a book (gently) at a wall.
In the UK, the book of the peerage is called Burke’s Peerage. Burke sounds like berk, which means a silly/annoying person. So Terry took ‘twerp’, another word for a silly or annoying person, and replaced the e with u.
The Book of Silly and Annoying People, based on the real thing with a pun on the name thrown in for good measure.
OMG I FUCKING *KNEW* VETINARI WAS A JOKE ON FUCKONG SOMETHING I JUST COULDNT GRASP IT. I THOUGHT IT WAS A REFERENCE TO WIND SOMEHOW
I am not a talented punster so I was today old when I realised about Vetinari.
guys it's fucking close to water
Latinclass ca. 9th grade: the text we had to translate contained the words trans means "on the other side of" or in german it can be translated to "über/ hinüber". Also silvas; silvanis means "the forest" or in german "der Wald".
Trans silvas very simply translated into german would be über den Wald
Trans silvas -> Transsilvanien -> Überwald
My latin teacher gave me a very weird look as I suddenly facepalmed myself and groaned quietly.
The Venturi and Selachii feud is what killed me when I got it.
The Venturi Effect is a scientific term referring to the acceleration of a liquid through a narrow tube (like a jet).
Selachii is a classification of sharks. (I discovered this when my stepson got really into sharks)
... fucking HELL Terry.
In Carpe Jugulum, Count Magpyr boasts of having helped write the Malleus Maleficarum, along with the Torquus Simiae Maleficarum, the Auriga Clavium Maleficarum, and in fact the entire Arca Instrumentorum.
The Malleus Maleficarum is a very real, very nasty and absolutely batshit insane book from late 15th-century Germany, basically laying out the procedure for catching, torturing, and executing witches. Its title translates to The Hammer of Witches. The other titles are Pratchett's inventions.
Malleus = "hammer" Torquus Simiae = "monkey wrench" Auriga Clavium = "bucket of nails" Arca Instrumentorum = "box of tools"
Monstrous Regiment is named for a pamphlet written by extremely shouty Calvinist and one of the leaders of the new Church of Scotland, John Knox, in the 16th century against all the women getting into positions of power in politics at the time (Liz I, Mary Queen of Scots etc). The document itself is titled "The First Blast of the Trumpet against the monstrous regiment of Women".
In a book about an overbearing and baffling and misogynist God and the heroes being a ragtag regiment of literal women and monsters, I punched the air on that one. The layers of pun are built up like a millefeuille.
(Also, if you read some of the stuff in the actual tract, you can see where Pterry got some of Nuggan's laws, although proceed with caution because it's a vitriolic piece of work)
Honestly, Tvyek is pretty miraculous. It’s permeable to water vapor but not to water, it’s nearly impossible to tear, but can be easily cut. It’s cheap and made entirely without binding chemicals. In addition to being used for wristbands, it’s used to wrap construction sites to keep out water during construction, for tear-resistant envelopes at Fed-Ex, coveralls for mechanics, and my wallet, actually.
Fun tip, though it looks like paper, Tyvek is plastic, and cannot be recycled with paper.
holy fuc
I didn’t even know it had a name
Hiromu Arakawa’s genius is obvious throughout all of FMA but her first and biggest leap of genius was in how she crafted her protagonist.
Arakawa realized the burgeoning youth of the early 2000s wasnt interested in another plucky spry optimistic young shonen protag. Instead she gave us a short ugly egotistical asshole smarter-than-you atheist with so much money and power that people could no longer best him in arguments by telling him “dude shut up ur literally like 12″
Five pages in we’re told Edward’s famous and rich and powerful. Five more pages and he’s calling some girl stupid for thinking God exists. Five more pages and he’s proven right. Five more and he’s kicked an evil priest’s teeth in. And no one can tell his mom on him.
Hiromu Arakawa figured out the dream of every edgy young weeb discovering internet arguments for the first time and she cast them an idol made of gold.

i would die for a tiny little piece of content from hal's daughters perspective where they just kinda gossip about everything that's happening
because a) they are cool i want to be friends with them but they are way above my league and also not real and b) well they are old and smart enough to know for sure that something's up and to have their own thoughts about it
imagine your dad picking up the sword of his dead brother and leaving you both to live together with one of your moms for a while right after the funeral ceremony. and then he comes late for the burial itself, bringing with him a not-so-close-to-the-family-itself friend and the smell of sewers. and then, for one of you, your professor (the friend in question btw) just kinda forces you to an internship program without asking and you just go with it. AND THEN there's a fucking assassination attempt right at the gala originally organized just to celebrate the theater and your dad ofc sends you all home immediately and after that never explains what went wrong. and also your dad is clearly constantly worried about something, everything, no matter how hard he hides it behind his work and smiles and other stuff. oh yeah and then everything concerning the museum, the theater itself, the bunch of weird people your dad now is apparently talking with etc. (hello angel in halovar's basement information)
boy i would be TALKING. and speculating A LOT. and these girls are not the type who would be scared, they more likely are curious . this is like the potential for a late night dialogue, a very good one. with the discussion about how stupid adults are sometimes
i honestly would write something like that if i knew how to write because it's my favorite trope and i want it badly. i mean maybe some day, i don't have enough info about everything that's happening currently anyway. but. yeah. gimme.

i felt like these tags really added to the experience, thanks @cynderxdustypaws for your knowledge
This is one of the most powerful images I have ever seen, and I will reblog it every single time because every single time it brings tears to my eyes.
really don't know how to explain to people Azune is horse-coded not dog-coded.
a non-comprehensive list of things Azune has in common with a horse
symbolically associated with both labor and freedom
strong work ethic
he almost definitely took Draconic sorcerer subclass and everyone who's been in middle school knows dragon girls are just horse girls but weirder.
usefullness is necessary to survive
big eyes that will show you the face of a dead god
long beautiful braided hair
i've never been so mad at someone for one-up'ing me on my own post.

I love the way Liam represents speaking Zemnian by not speaking with the accent.
Hell is an internal medicine unit and you can quote me on that.
HELLO ! have you thought about Van Gogh’s First Steps today ?
Here you go. This world is beautiful. Humans are beautiful. I love you
The way Michael Cacoyannis uses clothing to show Clytemnestra's descend to rage and madness in "Iphigenia" (1977) is amazing!
Notice how Irene Papas portraying Clytemnestra changes her style and wardrobe based on her character's feelings?
At the beginning of the film Clytemnestra is dressed neatly and wears white tones;
Her clothes are soft, white and flowy but also elaborate and include many details to the bodice. As for her hair is always neatly arranged.
Even to the scenes where she is dressed for bed, her hair is neatly made and kept safe under a veil so that it won't go in disarrange. She is showing how regal and composed she is. A wife of a powerful king and mistress of her household and everything on her appearance needs to be neat, regal but also bright and shiny and the brightness of her clothes reflects also her happy mood that she is about to see her beloved daughter getting married.
This image gets massively different after she finds out the truth and has her mental breakdown
Suddenly her white and neat clothes are covered by a dark-colored overcoat. The blackish-purple garment is concealing all the brightness of her white dress like her fury and sorrow covers her previous eagerness and joy. Her hair that used to be neat and perfect is now loose and free like a woman in mourning as she confronts her husband and she never tidied it ever since.
She no longer cares to appear neat or controlled. Her regal appearance or rather the way she conducted herself as the controlled queen is gone. Now she doesn't conceal anything but goes raw in emotion and presentation. And her hair down shows that too!
In fact Cacoyannis gives us this final MARVELOUS shot of Clytemnestra closing the film as she watches the fleet departing with those eyes filled with sorrow and hatred and the ships are being shown to us through the veil of her hair;
The proud and neat queen is gone. It is the birth of a woman already descended to hate and sorrow and who plans her revenge.
Her mourning hair; free locks for a woman who cries at a loss of a child, covers the ships the same way that her rage covers now the glorious image of war she had initially and gives the beginning of her revenge.
Michael when I catch you!
THIS is what happens when you allow the Greeks show their passion for their own history and mythology! Iphigenia (1977) based on the play "Iphigenia en Aulis", an Oscar-nominated film by Michel Cacoyannis and exclusively Greek casting
And here the phenomenal Irene Papas that we enjoy to "L'Odyssea (1968)" as Penelope and to "The Odyssey (1997)" as Anticlea now giving her all and in her own voice and language as Clytemnestra and her equally phenomenal co-protagonist Kostas Kazakos as Agamemnon have this heart-wrenching performance 😭😭
The seer PAIN and GUILT in his voice is killing me! "How can I answer such an inhuman question in a humane way?" My heart! 😭 and the way SHE stands her ground against his sadness that comes off as anger! "Your silence is enough" gosh! 😭 the seer pain of a mother and a father here! No Agamemnon laughing manichaly into the night of how how he gets his precious money from the war spoils but a father about to do the most inhumane thing to appease the gods for his hubris and a mother now realizing beyond any shade of doubt and being broken by it!
Dunno guys what kind of movies you expect in the cinema for greek mythology but THIS is the type I expect!
