hey don't cry. blorbo coughing up blood
blorbo writhing in agony ok? don't cry
blorbo screaming so much their voice becomes hoarse and weak and the pain still won't stop
blorbo unable to close their eyes and avoid the visceral sight of their own body
blorbo suffering unimaginable pain and being powerless to stop it ok? ok
stop. analyse that text through the lens of its author's intentions and original historical context. okay now take the author out back and kill them dead and analyse that text as though it were published by your mutual yesterday and is in direct conversation the contemporary discourse that's most relevant to your life. okay now pick your favorite angle of interpretation and come up with the strongest possible argument against it. now imagine that the text is your best friend and that it means you well and that you naturally give it every benefit of the doubt because you're on its side and you want the best for it. now imagine that the text wants you dead and it'll eat you if you don't eat it first. now pretend that you found this text locked away in a cave with no evidence of when or where it came from and you have to divine its meaning solely through its internal coherence and nothing else. okay now address the elephant in the room aspect of the text you've been ignoring because you find it boring or confusing or uncomfortable and become the number one expert on it. now spend forty minutes assigning all the characters dnd classes with at least three sentences of reasoning each. okay now do the cha cha slide.
Writing Notes: Inciting Incident
Inciting incident of a story - the event that sets the main character/s on the journey that will occupy them throughout the narrative.
Typically, this incident will upset the balance within the main character’s world.
In classic detective films like The Big Sleep, for example, the inciting incident is the detective being asked to take on a new case.
In moments big and small, an inciting incident changes the life of a character, and the ensuing story is the fallout from that change.
Tips for Using Inciting Incidents in Your Writing
A compelling inciting action can be the difference between a gripping story and a forgettable one. Here are 3 techniques to make sure you’re writing the most effective possible beginnings to your stories:
Keep to your timeline. To make your reader or viewing audience emotionally invested in an inciting incident, make sure it takes place during the timeline of the story you’re telling. When an inciting action is a past event that others make reference to, it lacks the visceral truth of an incident that the audience has experienced.
Let your inciting action stimulate something sustainable. Your inciting plot point should drive a character to behave a certain way throughout the narrative. Make sure that the driving force will be sustainable throughout the full course of your story. A detective driven to solve a complicated case will sustain throughout the story. A man bitter about not getting the last slice of pizza could potentially be funny, but it won’t sustain a particularly long story.
Make your inciting action cause a noticeable shift in your character. A compelling inciting action will make your character take actions she would not have otherwise. In The Fugitive TV series, Dr. Richard Kimble loses his wife to murder and, worse still is accused of that murder. These traumatic events change Kimble, and they launch him onto a quest so compelling that it sustained four full seasons of television.
An inciting incident exists to launch a story.

If I can be vulnerable for a second, as someone who has always read abandoned fics because my philosophy is "if someone took the time to write this, I want to take the time to read it", all of this influx of ai fics is really fucking me up 😭
Like I can read fics that are written a bit annoyingly or fics with a reasonable amount of ortography mistakes or fics that after a while I start to find repetitive or even a bit boring and I will leave kudos and a comment because even if it's not perfect, it came from love. As someone who started writting fics when I was 12 and produced some painfully awful shit, people reading and commenting are the reason I never gave up, and I've always wanted to be that for someone who maybe still need to work on their writing.
I appreciate the love and care put into a fic first of all, and the fact that now I keep metaphorically looking over my shoulder wondering if the fic I'm reading was written with love or is just ai slop breaks my heart.

he's beautiful i literally need to put him under extreme psychological stress. i need to put him in extreme physical pain. i need him curling up in someone's arms for the feelings of safety and comfort he hasn't received in ages
sex isn't real it's something they made up as a hypothetical so we could do kink discourse. it's kind of like the trolley from the trolley problem. it's just a thought experiment
