"I hate how American media will just make up a European nation rather than do any research, so I'm going to get back at them by writing a story set in a fake American state" like, do you have the slightest idea how much American media is set in a geographically impossible fictional small town located in no particular state and characterised entirely by some guy from Los Angeles' collection of half-remembered stereotypes about the American Midwest? They've already got the "lazily inventing fictional parts of America" bit locked down.
No, if you want to play the Uno reverse card on American media, what you need to do isn't to make up a fake state: you specifically need to wilfully misrepresent southern California.
The best thing about Xena is that ALL the AUs are already canon and not, in fact, AUs.
You want a modern day AU where Gabrielle and Xena are reincarnated and get together? Thereās a canon episode for that
Cowboy AU? Heist AU? Vampire AU? Battle of the Bands AU? Whodunnit Murder Mystery AU? Never became a warrior AU? Pirate AU? Prison AU?
How about some more niche ones as well?
Miss Congeniality AU? Arthurian legend AU? Footloose AU? The Producers AU? Angel and Demon romance AU? An Indiana Jones AU where Gabrielle is a whip wielding, treasure hunter and Xena is a sexy archaologist?
Fandom is weird now. Itās becoming less trusting and friendly, and the Orwellian surveillance issues that are currently running rampant in the USA and UK have bled over into fandom spaces.
Iād read the articles that young people have no privacy and have become so accustomed to it that they enact on themselves. Abstractly I knew this and had accepted it, but itās only now that Iām seeing it become a major issues.
Obviously part of the problem is I need to become a trusted member of my new fandom. But fandom in general is becoming far more hostile to privacy than even just 5 years ago.
Iāve had to leave 3 servers that want to do age verification. And this is new. Not even 5 years ago when I started zines ppl just turning 18-20 were far more receptive to the ideas espoused by us older folks about not being surveilled. But now it almost feels like they *want* to be surveilled.
Theyāve become so used to it from tiktok and their government that they crave it. Iād write a dystopia about it but unfortunately what even is there to say that hasnāt already been said?
If youāre 18-22 now and youāre reading this and willing to listen without immediately calling me suspicious: this is not normal. Age verification will not keep you safe and will not keep minors safe either. It will only lead to the normalization of further surveillance and erosion of your privacy.
I know it can be an unwieldy text especially if youāre not used to reading academic sources, but go read The Panopticon. Watch V for Vendetta or read the comic, read 1984. Watch The Lives of Others and understand the ways this modern era is not so different from the Stasi in the film.
Please.
I donāt want to see a rerun of the surveillance state anymore.

Two peads in a pod.
Ahem. I'll be honest I completely forgot about this. Its been sitting on my drive for two or three years (I think)
Throwback to the time I was in college and was technically underweight so I qualified for free Costco sized boxes of cliff bars and nutritionist visits, and the nutritionist (who was supposed to be helping me gain healthy weight) exclaimed over how many calories were in a banana when I was giving her a rundown of my eating habits and I knew I had to get out of there with my free cliff bars before I developed a real eating disorder.
Important note from a future nurse: if you are chronically ill, on a lot of medications, even managing conditions on your own, buy a drug guide. Davis's Drug Guide is what they had us buy for nursing school, and I've looked up every single medication I take in it. It helps you understand what the drug is doing to you, helps you understand side effects, reasons why you shouldn't take a medication, things to monitor for while you're taking a medication. It's not perfect by any means, but the thing I've found is that it's helped me guide conversations with providers, nurses, pharmacists, it's helped me figure out what questions to ask. When I've heard people talk about what they didnt know about their meds, what they wish they knew about their meds, it's often in a drug guide.
Out of everything I've learned in nursing school, it is the biggest thing I'd advocate for having in any home, period.

I love rebloging. Itās the adult equivalent of showing everyone the cool rock I just found.
in conversation about white people who go to Japan and expect their knowledge of anime to culturally carry them, I was once posed with āitās like if there was a Japanese guy who was obsessed with spongebob and came over here and thought he could get by just communicating in spongebob quotes.ā This is a false equivalence because if such a man existed we would crown him king. Weād love him. Americans would fucking love that. sometimes I get sad that this isnāt a real guy I can invite to a party.
My child, who spends their entire life being transfered from home to car to school and back, and is not allowed to leave the house or talk to anyone and can only in their wildest dreams imagine a life free from constant surveillance, is very sad. Obviously they're dumb and lazy, like all kids these days.
kind of a tangent but i recently went to a bowling alley with my friend i'm 19 he's 18 and the woman at the door didn't want to let us in because there was a sign saying under-18s needed adult supervision. everything got cleared up and we were able to go bowl, but i'm still so mad about the fact that kids need adult supervision to go to a bowling alley and arcade. like okay maybe young kids should have supervision but what do you mean middle and high schoolers need to hold mommy's hand while they play video games. kids aren't just addicted to their phones because phones are addicting, we're addicted to our phones because there's nothing else to fucking do
I'm sure banning kids from online spaces while simultaneously not ensuring that they have access to offline spaces to socialize in (without having to rely on their parents who already don't have time for them) will help them feel better & less alienated from society.
As I said, one-and-three-quarter years ago:
If you're going to take away kids' smartphones, then give them back the streets.
actually the best part of the new superman movie is the fact that lois and clark have been dating for only three months because that means clark fell so hard he told her his whole ass secret identity in 90 days. fucking u-haul lesbian behavior.

Cersei and Jaime as gendered mirrors:
Itās such a shame when people treat the Jaime x Cersei incest as merely a plot device that GRRM uses as a shock factor or to kick off Branās arc. Itās nasty, yes, but also essential in depicting where the twins were psychologically at the beginning of the story, and its way of portraying their views on their genders is nuanced in a way we rarely see in mainstream media.
Both Cersei and Jaime are trapped by their gender expectations in different ways, which is why GRRM specifies so heavily that they are identical twins: they act as mirrors to one another.
āMy brother, who is me, only born fortunate.ā
Cerseiās inner resentment towards Jaime and her need to control him stems from her frustration at the confines of her gender. She has the ambition to achieve greatness; she craves respect, drive, recognition; sheās every bit her fatherās daughter. But instead sheās wedded off to a wretched man who SAs her as he moans the name of a dead woman. Sheās forced to watch Jaime, a man who wears her face, be fed every opportunity that sheād kill for⦠and he wastes it. Jaime is not bloodthirsty, he isnāt particularly ambitious, he isnāt strategic. Heās spoiled with luck, wandering through life as the Lannister heir, who dotes on the dwarf that killed her mother, who cruises on his innate talent as a genius swordsman and doesn't even begin to comprehend how good he has it. Heās done nothing to deserve it, while she must fight tooth and nail to get even an ounce of the acknowledgement that heās born into. She schemes, and she weaponizes her appearance, because those are her scarce assets. Cersei does not see Jaime as her brother; he isnāt a separate entity from herself. Jaime is her male reflection, a tangible ghost of everything she could have had.
āMy sister, who is my maiden, therefore I am her knight.ā
Jaimeās born into a world of expectations he has no interest in bearing. He is a boy, he will be a man, he is meant to be a protector. But heās failed at protecting every single thing he loves. He had to stand uselessly by the door while he listened to the king abuse his sister, he was the reason his brother lost his one chance at true love, he watched all of his children die in front of him. The one time he did his duty as a knight and slew the evil which killed innocents, he was condemned for it and stripped of his honour. So Jaime learned young that everything is a joke⦠what is it to be a man? The role he was taught was a lie: true valour is punished. And in practice, what is a man other than one to sling cock at unwilling women? So he doesn't take anything seriously, because the game is unplayable. And he doesnāt pray to the gods, because where were they all those times he desperately begged? Instead, he looks to Cersei: his female mirror. As long as she remains his Maiden, he can be her Knight. Only attached to her can he find meaning for himself, and removed from her, he becomes just Jaime once more. And Jaime is not a pleasant thing to be.
Their relationship is so toxic that the literal fucking is actually a small part of it. Neither of them views the other as a complete entity, but rather as a tool for themselves to project their own experiences of inferiority and disillusionment onto. The emotional incest outweighs the physical incest; that's how messed up these two are. The only good thing Tywin gave his children was the face card.

Yesterday, Disney asked users on Threads to use Disney quotes to show how they are currently feeling. To say that this did not go according to Disney's plan would be an understatement š
They deleted the thread, but they should know that this doesn't help because now the videos are making their rounds š¤£š
