Am I the only one who found it weird, off-putting, and unnecessary when Hopper was talking El down from suicide (self-sacrifice, same thing) and used the fact that she might have a kid of her own one day as a reason for her to stay alive? El is a teenage girl who has not once expressed any desire to become a mother in the future. She is traumatized and has never had any agency in her life. She is also, I must repeat, a teenage girl. Why are we using becoming a mother as motivation to talk down a teenager from suicide? Why are we acting like this is something El wants and has always wanted? Why do male writers always reduce female characters’ bodies to their ability to make babies? Women and girls’ lives are not valuable because of their ability to have children—we are inherently valuable no matter what our bodies may or may not be capable of, whether or not we want kids at all. Our lives have worth because they are ours.

Another thing that pissed me off about Volume 2 was wdym Will only gets emotional scenes with his mom. Why is Joyce the only character he gets to have real conversations with to guide him through what he's going through. It's not like he has a bunch of friends his age, or a (formerly?) adoptive sister who would perfectly understand the guilt he's feeling over being used as a vessel for evil. It's not like his best friend since kindergarten correctly figured that he was more powerful than he thought, and they could've had a real talk together about it. But no let's make Will the only one who needs his mom around 24/7. And only his mom. That's not infantilizing at all

Wasting the mind world on random children that no one really knows instead of the main characters... God I really hope ep. 8 saves this show

put aside the shipping discourse for a moment and lets talk about how the duffers portray the abused female body as spectacle in this show. that scene where kali was running through rooms and rooms of dying pregnant women? karen fighting through her grievous, near life-threatening injuries to be a mother? the treatment of el/jane's character? over and over this show makes victims of its female characters and makes it 'ok' by having them be strong and fight back. the constant dehumanisation of jane throughout the show and the denial of her autonomy by entrapping her in a relationship the moment that she escaped her prison and gained a scrap of freedom is not by chance. it is a consistent and concentrated effort to keep her in constant pain and clip her wings so that she can never heal and her wounds stay open, just so that we can sit back and entertain ourselves watching her try to fight for her freedom with her supernatural powers without ever giving her real narrative power. the whole operation of el's creation was built off of the exploitation and torture of vulnerable pregnant women by a power-hungry man, but the show never reckons with that legacy. the suffering and abuse of female bodies becomes backdrop, a prop aiding the dark tone and aesthetic of the show rather than a serious narrative theme that jane should be grappling with as a descendant of that legacy. instead, she becomes an continuation of it. her suffering is an extension of her mother's: a tortured woman being controlled and used by men around her in a bid for power, ultimately reduced to a plot device as the narrative succeeds over her.

I know people can say with any piece of media that people who hate it just don’t get it however Dear Evan Hansen is one of those where 99% of the time you’re actually right about that

hey can anyone who hated season 2 but still loves arcane and it's characters like this post. I'm tired of seeing mindless praise or posts hating the characters for the bad choices the writers made

i think the six of crows fandom has a real problem with acknowledging complexity in the characters which is ironic because it’s literally a book about morally grey characters. like yes kaz is a cold blooded murderer who cares more about money than being a good person but he’s also a dumb teen boy with a crush and a bad haircut. inej is a knife-wielding spy as well as a deeply religious girl who never stopped believing in kindness. jesper is a confident, reckless sharpshooter but he’s also incredibly scared and angry. wylan is an empathetic and kind artist along with being a dangerously intelligent explosives expert. nina is a fun, food-loving girl but she also stands up for the oppressed and struggles to recover from an addiction. matthias is an angry druskelle but he’s also the boy who learned to love grisha unconditionally. even kuwei has more depth than we give him credit for. he’s the flirty troublemaker as well as a grieving kid who’s had too much pressure put on him. they all have nuance, please don’t take that away because it’s such an important theme in the books
