Valerian Officer Portrait
This is a marker doodle of a Valerian military officer from the same sword-and-sorcery fantasy world as those Khumetians warriors I've drawn in digital lately. Just as the Khumetians are based on the ancient Nile Valley civilizations such as Egypt and Kush, the Valerians are based on ancient Rome. So far, I have one short story drafted involving the Valerians, which takes place around the time their republic has undergone a civil war and split into a triumvirate run by competing strongmen.
With regards to designing their look, the challenge was maintaining the Romanesque vibe without copying the historical Romans wholesale. My solution for the time being was to mix the Roman elements with some from other southern European cultures. For example, this officer's helmet has some Spanish and Greek influences showing in the metal ridge supporting a red crest. In addition, when naming Valerian characters in that story I wrote, I replaced the -us suffix with -o or -io to make them sound more like modern Italian.

Columnas y Contrafuertes, Iglesia de Santa MarÃa Real del Sar - Columnas e Contrafortes, Igrexa de Santa MarÃa Real do Sar, Santiago de Compostela, 2012.
The flying buttresses were not a part of the original building, but they were added when the walls began to collapse.
In a city full of architectural gems, the small, mostly romanesque Santa MarÃa Real do Sar is my favorite, away from the crush of pilgrims and tourists and thus easier to examine and enjoy.

- One of the most important churches in Spain, the Basilica of San Isidoro, was built atop a Roman temple dedicated to Mercury. Following the Reconquista, construction of the Romanesque structure began, and the remains of its patron saint, Saint Isidore of Seville, were transferred there in the 11th century. During the Late Middle Ages, it became the pantheon for the kings and queens of León, as well as for other nobles. Built over the course of several centuries, the church features a series of additions in various styles; nevertheless, its entrance portal stands as a preeminent example of Romanesque architecture.
