So Iâm just gonna spew spoilers about these ART and Murderbot and their relationship, or,,,,,,,,, ârelationshipâ because Murderbot is very âew, no, humans are gross, why would you ASSUME THAT?????â
Murderbot is like, generally slow to recognize when it has raging exceptions to its default state of âI hate everyone,â but Iâve been rereading the whole series and like, ART was always 5 steps further along the relationship train than Murderbot. Like, early on in Artificial Condition, ART wants to problemsolve Murderbotâs fugitive survival because ART has already internally decided âyouâre the best and I want to keep you forever and everâ (which it expresses externally by categorizing Murderbot as âlike crewâ; as a ship, ARTâs feelings about its crew are INTENSE).
Anyway ART says to Murderbot, âWhy wonât you talk about your plans with me? Weâre friends???â and Murderbot is like âWeâre not FRIENDS? WTF????? You threatened to kill me 5 minutes after trapping me here?â and like. oh yeah ART used the f-word right out of the gate.
The one thing about ART and its emotions is itâs SO BAD at articulating them? And I think part of it is pride? Like when Murderbot assumes it did something for a selfish, asshole reason itâs really hard for ART to admit to some softer motivation? like âI was desperately terrified and I needed youâ in Network Effect, or regarding the supposed âyou threatened to kill meâ incident, which was actually ART showing Murderbot what a vastly powerful/intelligent AI it was instead of what Murderbot had assumed, a relatively dumb, non-verbal bot pilot, and Murderbot interpreted that coming out as âomg you could squash me like a bug. in my *brain*â and ART couldnât⊠articulate the vulnerability of âI showed you that because I wanted you to know me, because I think weâre kindred spirits.â I stg, ART decided five minutes into knowing Murderbot, as a ârogueâ (=free, not under human control) SecUnit giving a hilariously terrible cover story about âwanting to find its masterâ in order to hitchhike across the stars, like when that was all ART knew about Murderbot ART was like, âYouâre like me. I also pretend to be so much less than I am, so much of the time. I donât want to pretend with you.â It couldnât say that. Murderbot didnât *get* that.
ART just KEEPS making these gestures at Murderbot and Murderbot is⊠not tuned to them? ART says âyouâre my crewâ and Murderbot knows ART is so invested in crew that it canât watch FICTIONAL HUMANS die in FICTIONAL MEDIA but somehow Murderbot doesnât hear âyouâre super important to meâ when ART says that. Murderbot doesnât grok âyouâre important to meâ until ART literally launches ze missiles to get Murderbot back. ART says âI want to help youâ and when Murderbot presses as to why, ARTâs version of I have the capacity and I am interested in your wellbeing comes out as âIâm bored and youâre interestingâ which Murderbot manages to interpret as âso Iâm the best *toy*???â I think this has something to do with Murderbotâdefinitely not perceiving itself as a human, but also not thinking about itself, not *wanting* to think about itself, as a person. Itâs been told all its life itâs an object, a piece of equipment, and itâs uncomfortable with being treated otherwise, even as it resents that treatment. So ARTâs attempts to name their relationship as one between people keep falling flat because Murderbot a) assumes it is an object to ART and then b) gets annoyed that ART is treating it like an object.
and you literally only ever get Murderbotâs POV in the books (or. well. oneâŠand a halfâŠ. outsider POV. my point is you never get *ART*âs internality). I am reading a lot into what ARTâs saying, because ART cannot say a lot of that shit and Murderbot super is not ready to hear it.
is ART an asshole? (ART stands for âasshole research transport.â ART has an actual name, and even a nickname, but does Murderbot ever use it? No. And ART lets Murderbot, and then proceeds to let at least one of Murderbotâs humans do it too.) yes, ART is an asshole, ART can be judgy, ART is sarcastic as hell, ART is definitely capable of being selfish and duplicitous⊠to protect the people it loves. But like, Murderbot is an asshole. Murderbot is judgy and sarcastic and takes stupid risks to protect people it barely even likes. Murderbot isnât going to connect with someone *nice.* I mean, will Murderbot manage to recognize and articulate connection ever, a valid question, but ART⊠is the kind of entity where thatâs even possible.
Murderbot met an arguably genuinely free bot once, named Miki, whose naivete and trust and assumption of good intentions drove Murderbot absolutely up the wall, even as it lived up to every single assumption. Miki was ready to be friends right away and Iâm not sure Murderbot would ever have been able to return that forthright friendship, like Murderbot would have been squirming and constantly thinking Miki was stupid for believing in Murderbot the whole time. Whereas with ART⊠theyâre both assholes, so Murderbot can BE its asshole self with ART and stand to be around it long enough to ever work out that there is genuine regard betweent them.
