shakes you by the shoulders. the final message of dear evan hansen isn't that lying, manipulation, and fraud are okay if you're a bit sad when you do them, it's that even when someone is at their worst and lashing out and hurting people they still deserve to get better and not face universal condemnation when in dire need of help. zoe never says that how connor treated her was okay, she says that how their parents treated him also wasn't right. no one ever says that what evan did was okay, it is in fact quite the opposite, the murphys just don't ruin his life and zoe is glad to see that he's doing alright a year later. the "today you're you and that's enough" thing isn't about how evan specifically is inherently good and therefore should get away from all consequences or something, it's about how being a person is enough to be deserving of life and growth.
