No one wants to watch Stop Making Sense with me

I remember being able to watch this awesome film several years ago for the first time during a time of isolation and self-image issues. It was New Years Eve. I was alone and had nothing better to do than sit awake. So on a whim I turned it on. It had an impact on me. Something wild and euphoric. Maybe it was the big suit. Maybe it was the lamp.

You can’t underestimate the power of David Byrne flailing on stage for about an hour.

I’m watching it again during a better time of my life. And I’m able to look back and see that Mr. Byrne was kind of a goal for me. I saw his aesthetic and build and performance and artistry. And all I wanted was to look like him.

Thank god he isn’t anywhere near this site because there must be something so familiar and alien knowing that someone wants your body. But then, there’s something familiar and alien about having a body that doesn’t match your perception of yourself.

And of course, the music! I could write more but this is enough for now.

There was something in watching David Byrne’s performance, in sweaty shirtsleeves, in large suits, dancing with a lamp, and running laps around the stage that eased my dysphoria.

And for that I thank him.

This must be the place.

Home, it’s where I want to be.

And I want to be at home in my body.
